Itsjustagame
So I just died at fight caves. Nothing new, people die there quite often. In fact, most people don't get fire cape on their first try. Today was the first day in 7 years (not all of which there was even a fire cape, but for drama purposes) that I tried for a fire cape. I spent a lot of time reading guides and watching clips, so I knew exactly what I was doing. I started off breezing through waves 1 - 40. Didn't take any damage, only used 1 super restore. Perfect run. At wave 45, where it's a 360 and the first 180 appear, I did exactly what I was supposed to. I trapped the 360 behind a wall, ran all the way across to the other side of the rock, and lured the 180 to the safe spot. So far, so good. The second I click attack on the 180, my screen starts moving very slow. Luckily, if I was going to lag, this was the ideal time. No prayer was on, and nothing was attacking me. Or so I thought. During my lag, my character thought it would be a great idea to run out about 20 feet in the open when I clicked one square ahead of myself. Needless to say, when my lag stopped, I see about 10 yellow magic spells fly from the sky and hit my character. Dead. Oh well, I didn't use many supplies, just my time. I tried it again a few hours later. Once again, perfect run. On wave 60, the wave with a 360, a 180, and 2 90s, I killed both 90s first, taking minimal damage. I lured the 180...and then it happened again. Full lag, this time screen completely frozen...only I had my sound on, and I could hear attacks being fired. I didn't have auto retaliate on so I clicked the ground even though I knew it wouldn't do anything. If I didn't kill the 180, the 360 wouldn't round the corner as it was stuck. After about 30 seconds of frozen screen, it came back, just like that. I killed the 180, overjoyed that I was 1 360, and then 2 rounds away from Jad. I took 3 steps forward to attack the 360...........and my account logged out. How does this happen? How can my luck be SO bad that I log out not once, but TWICE. Both times - perfect runs. Both times - would have easily gotten to Jad. Both times - would have more than likely killed Jad. How does one's account log out on his own mid round? I hadn't clicked log out, I didn't do anything. I even attacked a monster AFTER the lag was over. Yet the second I move my character...cya later. I log back in...and I'm standing outside the cave. No tokkul. No fire cape. Just a bunch of empty vials, and a significantly smaller ammo quiver. Awesome.
compfreak847
Like it or not, it's your computer or internet connection, or (very unlikely) somewhere between you and Jagex servers. Get a new computer or ISP. I'll retell the story for the 14th time :P I use Comcast Cable over Gigabit Ethernet on a high end gaming desktop\laptop. I never lag. Ever. On any server. And I've been on them all. It's not Jagex's fault. compfreak847
I have a Toshiba Satellite gaming laptop with upgraded gaming software and I use cox high speed cable for a connection. It's not my computer or connection. I rarely lag out walking around or skilling. Then you got unlucky and your internet crapped out at the wrong time. I've had Jagex's servers lag ~3 times in my years of playing RS. The only time it's Jagex's fault is when the game freezes then unfreezes and everyone around you (and friends PM you) "ugh lag". Those times when you DC? Your fault. Smapla
well i mean... it could be your computer is flipping out when it has to process the new models/attacks (sounds, graphics, etc) of those monsters... very strange that it happened like that. Itsjustagame
so basically I shouldn't do fight caves again until I go back to school with a different connection? meh, only a week wait.
Makoto_the_Phoenix
1) I didn't know the Fight Caves were out for a whole seven years. Wow. 2) I suspect overheating, but not as a catalyst to the lag. It could also be your connection. Address both and see if you lag as much. funnisam
test your download and upload speed, i lag quite a lot even though my laptop is quite new and my internet has almost half the download speed of compfreak's internet. however my upload speed is about 1/10th of his, which is why i lag and he doesn't. you should also try to connect to a server in your country (no i'm not implying you are stupid, just a suggestion, seeing as i've done it too many times :wall: ) Most Difficult Quiz Rare drops; tzhaar-ket-om: 6 tzhaar-xil-ak: 4 tzhaar-xil-ek: 4 tzhaar-mej-tal: 1 Obsidian cape: 18 Dragon Plateskirt: 4 Dragon Platelegs: 7 Sq Shield left half: 1 Dragon Boots: 1 Dragon Medium Helmet: 11 Draconic Visage: 1 Zamorak Spear: 3 Steam Battlestaff: 1 Godsword Shards: 3 Bandos Chestplate: 1 Bandos Tassets: 1 Abyssal Whip:

A lag [bleep]e gets caused by a short connection loss, or a sudden increase in the time that servers need to get in "touch" with eachother or packets that have been lost in the traffic (aka ping). Also, computer speed has nothing to do with lag. A slow pc causes hick-ups, low fps, and all that. But lag is a connection problem. Actually it does. If your machine runs hotter than it normally should, then you'll get slower response times. Too much heat in any part of your machine (CPU, RAM, etc) will cause slowdowns, or will cause the computer to shut off completely. This is the only reason that I never game on laptops; their form factor makes them highly susceptible to heat, regardless of the type of laptop it is. 1) I didn't know the Fight Caves were out for a whole seven years. I don't recall it being in the first post, but then again, I did post this when I was kinda sleepy. Wasn't meant as a dig, really -- I can't remember when those came out. :P Anyway, to address the lag, check your connection. Not the speed, but the reliability (what percent of packets get through if you ping google.com a thousand times, for instance). If it falls below a certain threshold (probably between 80 and 90%), then contact your ISP and ask why they're not giving you a reliable connection. rangeor
Man, I know what you mean. The first time I tried for fire cape I got to Jad just fine, without any lag problems, then when he had about 1/4th hp left (after healers were killed) all of a sudden I lose connection. And die. :? Not a fun place to lag at

Your network card won't ever overheat so there's no slow downs that are associated with a bad connection, thus no lag. Also, it's highly unlikely overheating will show symptoms that resemble lag. You will more likely get errors, graphical glitches or just a general crash. Besides, lag is pretty much anything that shows a noticeable slowdown with a system; doesn't just have to be from the network (which is really called latency). Itsjustagame
further proof that my account is plagued: I just tried again for fire cape. I get to wave 62, with the 2 360s. No lag at all the entire time. I used a DIFFERENT computer at a DIFFERENT location. The location is a college campus which has amazing internet connection. As soon as the wave starts, my firewall "all of a sudden" decided to start scanning my computer for downloads and viruses. Screen gets laggy, then goes white. I log back in 10 minutes later when the screen finally came back...and I'm outside of cave. Yea. Wtf did I do wrong, jagex?
