Interviews!

During this bad Economic time, I bet loads of us have lost our jobs and are looking for new ones. That means we need interview techniques. Luckily, I'm still at school and need interview techniques to get into other schools (ones with far too much competition) but seeing as i'm terrible with interview techniques, even If I am fairly outgoing, I was wondering if anyone has any good ones.

Also I need some good techinques and how to dos on an interview I have coming up recently with my head teacher, on why I should be prefect, because that's even tougher competition. 40 people, 10 of whom are extremely favoured by the headteacher herself, But if i'm going down, I'm going down fighting!

And then dragging people down with me. It's what I do. :D

So what are some good techniques I (and possibly other people here on TIF) can use? I was planning to go in there and tell her why i'd make a good prefect as people listen to me and i'm involved in school activites etc, and out of school activites. It may sound like I have a decent chance, but it's not as good as it sounds because i'm not one of those favoured people to be prefect by her.

Any help appreciated again. :D

Interviews like that should be easy. I never applied myself in school but I ended up being Head Boy because I blagged the interview so well. You just have to tell them what they want to hear. Be confident, and that's about it.

Basically, you have to sell yourself. For those 10 minutes, you really have to believe that you are the best and that you are perfect. I also prepare a couple of good points I'd like to mention depending on the type of interview being held.

Are these academic interviews? Or ones designed to test your "all-roundedness" ?

Practicing for both kinds, and maybe a job interview.

Hmmm... A job interview in the medical profession.... I bet it's easier then a job interview at a random big corporate business. :P

The Dwight Shrute approach is definitely the way to go.

I only have experience with academic interviews. At those, they don't really care how you dress (as long as you're not sloppy), they just want to see how you think. Be interested in whatever they ask you and tell you. Don't worry about the right answer, and instead focus on explaining your reasoning and thinking. Basically just think out loud. Pause before you speak (don't jump in) and state any reservations you have.

Killer, it would help me (us), if you told us what year of schooling you are in.

For Medical Entry, interviews, it would help if you told me in which country you live.

In Australia, to even get to the interview, you must pass with 99+ UAI's ( equivalent of GCSE and CAT's)

Then there is the UMAT (Undergrad. Medical Aptitude Test).

Regarding Medical Interview, speak with confidence, and show them you are a team player and understand, very well other peoples emotions.

Tell them about your extra curricluar activites, your schooling.

The more the better.

Currently I'm in the Charities commitee at school, will start Duke of Edinborough soon. Did (scouts) for about 5 years. Was in Australian Army Cadets for some time.

Believe me when I say that, in regard to Medical entry exams, marks are secondary.

Tell her academics and involvement aren't what make good prefects, they're just bonuses. Say you'd make a good prefect because you are sociable, outgoing and could be considered a role model to the younger students which will ultimately gain respect, which is basically the most important requirement for a prefect.

I've always done great in interviews, why? Pure grade A bull[cabbage]. I don't suck up which gets their respect, I mention reasons why I'm more suitable than the rest of the crowd, I make them see it through my perspective. I went into a meeting for a school trip which is granted to 5% applied, I didn't have much of a chance compared to a lot of students but I got the trip all down to my "bull[cabbage]ing" skills.

Come up with your own reasons to why you'd be good, then explain them and make them think through your perspective on it.

Don't suck up, but don't try to use reverse psychology. Be honest, but if there's something you'd rather not say, twist your words in a certain way.

Don't use seven words when four will do. Be specific but not memorable, be funny but don't make him laugh. He's got to like you then forget you the moment you've left his side.

Be confident. I have interviewed and been interviewed several times, and the one thing that will win it for you is confidence. You are selling yourself, and YOU are the best product out there. Believe it, and you will do great.

Good luck ::'

Ocean's Eleven, and the first part was serious.

And the quote actually does make a bit of sense. Part of it at least.

And yeah, confidence is a huge part.

now would be the time to bring up any dirt you have on any of those other 40 people O:)

talk clearly

don't put your foot in your mouth

act confident but not overbearing

smile - but not too much (I assume the prefect position will require you to maintain some level of seriousness & discipline), expand upon your positives

have good body posture (don't fold your arms, don't stare, don't tap your feet)

make sure you have multiple examples of previous leadership positions, & what you've learned from them

i don't know how formal this interview is, but you may want to be somewhat prepared to answer some behavioral questions.

during my first employment interview, the interviewer pulled out some of these types of questions, and if you're not prepared (I wasn't), they'll really suck.

Here's a site with some examples of em - http://www.quintcareers.com/sample_behavioral.html
