An Air France plane has just crashed at Pearson Airport in Toronto, about 1 hour ago. I live in Toronto, and am pretty shocked to hear the news, as nothing major (in terms of bad news) ever happens, at least nothing like this. 3 Explosions so far, one of which I saw while watching live updates on TV. Gave me goosebumps. 291 on board, Pilot and co Pilot made it out alive, many have been taken to hospitals, no death toll, no injury toll, no other real information known.

We've been having heavy rain and thunderstorms all day, thunder, lightning, as a result Pearson was at red alert due to the storms. So the crash is weather related. They're thinking it may have been a vertical downdraft. Heavy traffic, as its rush hour, and this is just off Toronto's largest highway, highway 401. The jetliner is one of the largest of its kind, but luckily was not at capacity. It was an Airbus 340.

TORONTO -- A passenger jet has skidded off the runway at Toronto's Pearson International Airport and crashed into a ditch. The flight is apparently Air France flight AF358, an Airbus A340, and the airliner is now nose-down in a ditch, billowing thick black smoke. Watch it live!

Smoke billowed from a wooded area near Highway 401, Canada's busiest highway as emergency crews sped to the scene. A portion of the plane's wing could be seen jutting from the trees.

Peel police say the craft was an Air France passenger jet that was attempting to land when it ran into trouble.

"An Air France plane landing on runway 2-4 left went off the end of the runway the area of Convert Drive and the 401 area in Mississauga," said Sgt. Glyn Griffiths.

"Unknown at the time of any injuries. Flame was seen from the plane. And full response by all emergency vehicles."

He couldn't say whether any passengers had been removed from the plane.

Traffic on the westbound 401 has been temporarily diverted in the area.

Ok, 297 is the official toll on the plane, at least 48 have minor injuries. As little as 3 busloads full of people have been taken to local hospitals. The airplane itself skidded 200 feet before stopping, crashing into a rivine not too far from the highway itself. The plane is more or less completely destroyed. At this time, the fires are believe to have been put out.

Unless there is a major explosion there shouldnt be much casulty because the plane was on the runway. So most ppl werebuckled up. The wing is the part that is most likely on fire, and since its a large international airport the fire wouldnt have spread.

i dont see why airport officals let this plane land when they know fully well that wind shear could have seriously impaired the pilots control at low altitude

No casualties. All passengers and crew have made it out alive. Just a few minor injuries reported!!! View more, as the story has now been put up as headline news on CNN.com.

Its sad that some thing like this happened. But thankfully no one was hurt :) I heard that the pilot lost control when it was 30 feet off the ground. I also heard it was struck by lightning. But for shure if the plane was any higher there would have been plenty more injuries.

:o  :D To me this is sooo amazing. No casulties.

Guy did everything possible given the conditions.

It was soo dark outside cuz of the rain, and I thought it was still morning...

As for 'why did they let the plane land' - if it had been higher up in the sky when it was hit by lightning, things would have been a lot worse.

Amazing that everyone made it out okay :)

My dad should be home from vacation any day soon so I was scared when i first heard this news :o
