21st Century Breakdown

Couldn't see a topic on the front page, I assume if there were it would be on there.

So Green Day's new album came out today. I'm going to be all fan boy and call it the greatest thing ever created by man, since I'm not a 14 year old American girl.

It's an interesting album.

I think it sounds something similar to Warning (released in 2000, GD's least selling album so far) which was very mellow, slower and more thoughtful overall, although some songs like Minority still had the classic Green Day sound. Warning has sold the least commerically, but I think it's one of their better albums, with more musicianship and experimenting with sounds and instruments and deviating from their usual sound.

The album is also the follow on from American Idiot (2004), and many will assume it's going to be exactly the same. Granted, it's still political and questions religion and other authority, but it has a different feel from American Idiot. I think 21st Century Breakdown is an amalgamation of the subdued tone of Warning and the core message of American Idiot. Some tracks like Know Your Enemy are simple and catchy, akin to American Idiot (the song), while others are complex and challenging, such as ¿Viva La Gloria? (Little Girl), which sounds very similar, rhymically and vocally, to the tracks Misery and Deadbeat Holiday from Warning.

Overall it's a more difficult to receive than past albums, I think a lot of people will have problems with listening to it. Myself included, I consider myself a diehard fan of all their past music. There's not a song on any of their past studio albums that I don't like, don't know the words to or don't know the music to. This is my first Green Day album that's come out since I've been listening to them, as I only heard them after American Idiot was released, and since then have all their albums etc. I can say that I'm not taken with all the tracks, although some I'm now addicted to after only a few listens. I'm sure some of the songs need an acquired taste to appreciate them, which I haven't developed yet.

Thanks for reading, haven't been on tip.it in weeks now, I just wanted somewhere I was established on to post my opinion.

I love Green Day and hopped over to iTunes when I saw this thread. I listened to all of the 30 second previews of the songs (which doesn't allow me to make a 100% fair judgment, but I tried :P). Honestly, I was a little disappointed. None of the songs really stood out to me and a lot of them just sounded similar. Before making that my final opinion, however, I'll have to listen to some of the entire songs, rather than 30 second previews which may not do them justice.

I have to admit that at first I was a little dissapointed. But after giving it a chance and listening to it some more, it has good lyrics and it's much deeper than American Idiot (imo). Also a lot slower. 21 Guns and 21st Century Breakdown are my faves atm \'

I did pretty much the same thing and had the same reaction.

I was never much of a fan of Warning and I agree that 21st Century Breakdown does sound similar. I'm a much bigger fan of their older stuff on Kerplunk and Dookie.

I'll just wait until they have a copy at my local library. I'm sure not going to pay for it.

Oh, and I saw them on SNL last night. Does anyone think that the drummer looks like a robot when he drums?

One of my friends made me listen to this. All of the tracks were mediocre to bad and the album just goes on for way too long.

That's how I felt. I first heard about the album when I watched the music video for their "Do you know the enemy" or whatever it's called, and from just that song I knew it was not going to be a very good album. That song was not good IMO.

My 2nd favourite album at the moment. :D (First Metallica - Death Magnetic.)

Its a awesome album in my opinion, most of the songs start of pretty boring but then they kick in a lot and get a lot better.

My favourite track on this is East Jesus Nowhere. :D

Know Your Enemy is probably one of the worst on the track. It's way too simple (I think there's like 3 notes in the entire song?). Don't judge the album just on that song.

The latest Guitar World magazine has the official tab for it. There are five chords that are actually used in the song, although two are only played ten times, and the chords are

B5

Bsus4

F#5

F#sus4 (used ten times)

A5 (used ten times)

And the solo includes eight different notes. Actually five, three of them are the same note only an octave lower. (B F# D# C# E)

Dynamic!

Metallica and Green Day? :anxious:

Can't I have my own opinion on music? Or do I have to go by one genre? <.<

Well said!

I keep seeing all these articles giving it 8, 9, 10 out of 10 and wonder how much Green Day pay them to say that. Seriously, it's not that great.
