A Solution To Forum Lag

Recommended Posts

I never really veiw this board, but I have a proposition.

There are currently 85,533 members on this forum, probably more by the tim you've read this far down. I checked the member list and only 10,034 people have a post count of over 1, seriously. Some don't even post on the boards anymore. That makes 75,499 people who joined and left, only post 10 times. I don't even know if this will make the boards faster, but I guessed it might, and I've heard a lot of people say how the boards can take a long time to load. So if we delete these members maybe the boards will run faster, maybe.

dont know what they could do except pay for more bandwidth, but they dont have the funds to do that. i do get mad everynow and then, when it takes ten minutes to go to a page sometimes, then it will load quick, and i can go to another page right after no delay. it is just weird the way it works on my computer, which leads me to beleive it may just be my computer. i would like to have the forums sped up a bit, but i dont know any way to do that. i guess they could archive all the topics older than one year, and put them on their own server. i dont know if that would do anything though

That will only save sql database size not make the forum go faster. The only thing that _might_ go faster is the members list but only because they would be less results to call up in the query.

If you want less lag then donate to tipit so they can afford a faster server. Thats the only thing to stop lag.

Or you could just get a better internet connection (you know, get what you pay for and such).

I propose we delete the accounts of everyone who changes their entire post to a different colour for no reason whatsoever. It would help the average IQ of posters here.

No, not really, the boards are just slow sometimes and having the fastest internet connection in the world at your house wouldn't help.

Back to the whole donating thing, I still haven't figured out how it works. I even posted about it a while back, and didn't get much help there either. Imo, it doesn't seem like tip it even wants any forum money. Before you say how great the hassle free environment is, I'm not asking that. A simple donate button would be nice, with your option to click it or not. Plain and simple.

There is a donate button on tip it runescape forums, but why should I donate to runescape related bandwith, when I'm just here for the forums? I wouldnt mind donating to the forums at all.

Aye, that is why I don't have plans to donate.

My motivation would be to keep ARENAscape running nicely but like I asked last time, it would go to tip.it as a whole :x

So you just can't seem to win, donate to one, donate to all.

The member list onlyshows 50 at a time it wouldent make the tinyest diffrence wich wouldent be noticeable.

What would cut back on bandwith is to lose the avatars but that would be a real shame mayb remote avatars could do (but then we get the redX plague)

Refining images might help but only on there initial load after that their in users cache.

THe word censor cut back on that or impliment a mod that changes bad words instead of just masking them everytime a page is loaded.

Some of the best tweaks are where you least expect to find them ;)

Those tweaks are written by one of the admins of Gaia Online so they are pretty legit and im sure good at speeding things up. Gaia Online is the largest phpBB forum EVER.

That they are. And in most cases subtle changes which you really wouldn't expect to effect the performance of a forum all that much. At least not compared to other more obvious choices (like the search word table).

An option to not display anyone's avatar and/or signature, would speed it up I think. Other than that a donation button in the bottem left corner -where the money goes just to the forums and not to tip.it/runescape and where you gain ad-less access to the forums- would be start. Also ofcourse with the donated money, maybe faster servers could be afforded. :)

Not really, the main problem is the query execution time on the database server.

not displaying avatars and or signatures will only speed render times up if you have a slowish connection.
