Rorschach
I want to get summoning up on my ranger, as it seems incredibly useful to have. As far as I can tell, summoning doesn't increase your combat level unless you are carrying summoning related equipment. Am I right? Or does it still increase it, and it just increases it more when you do carry pouches and etc. ?
Inuashakent
If you have a pouch or a familiar, it increases when you're doing something PvP related. [Summoning guide (AOW)] [Slayer guide] [Melee & Brawl player]
Rorschach
But not otherwise right?
Inuashakent
Correct, although if you're not in a pvp world or doing something pvp related, your combat will be risen. This shouldn't matter, though. Rorschach
Oh ok. Just to clarify: Your combat level is boosted when not competing in PvP, but when competing in PvP, as long as you dont have any pouches or familiars with you, your combat will not increase. Correct? Oh and amazing guide by the way :D

purewcnub
Terrorbird is godly for doing Treasure Trails, quests, or any activities that require running, plus it can hold 12 items! If you can get your summoning really up, then you can use Titans, yip, or pony.(Along with a ton of other useful familars like the fruit bat.) Gilformen
Dumb pures will still give you [cabbage] when they see the 60+8 or something. im not a fan of getting summoning on a pure, i mean, the whole idea of being pure is to keep specific skills very low. also, if you are getting summon, be careful which creatures you use, as some give controlled xp (like terrorbirds) and some give defense xp. just so youre aware of that. 32,606th to 99 magic || 15,388th to 99 dungeoneering || 12,647th to 99 farming14,792nd to 99 range || 24,954th to 99 herblore

Yes, the point it to keep your combat low but why would that matter if it's deducted while you PvP? crossedbody
im not a fan of getting summoning on a pure, i mean, the whole idea of being pure is to keep specific skills very low. Invalid point. The a pure's purpouse is to get high offensive stats while keeping a low combat, in order to kill people faster. Pures sacrifice defense for that purpouse. If summoning doesn't rise your combat level when pking, you are free to level it as you wish, and still be a pure.

Yes, the point it to keep your combat low but why would that matter if it's deducted while you PvP? i said specific skills, not combat. usually att/prayer are low, def is nonexistant, and i would add summoning as a skill to keep at 1. as i said, im not a rabid hater of summon, im just not a fan. and yes, you can stay technically pure while training summoning, i agree. 32,606th to 99 magic || 15,388th to 99 dungeoneering || 12,647th to 99 farming14,792nd to 99 range || 24,954th to 99 herblore
purewcnub
A person who is not a fan of summoning must have not leveled it to 52 or higher.. Even if you have you're not using it right. Goals: 94 magic94 ranged55 slayerAddy gloves-done
Troacctid
Summoning is perfectly acceptable to have on a pure, since it doesn't affect your combat while pking. I see nothing wrong with it if you're willing to spend the cash on it. Read my blog | Follow me on Twitter | Track my XP
Gilformen
A person who is not a fan of summoning must have not leveled it to 52 or higher.. Even if you have you're not using it right. i have 68 summon on my main, gilformen, and i was ranked around 17,000 when i got it. i used bunyips a lot when melee training, and i did a lot of gwd too. so yes, i know how to use summon. even though i know how useful it is, i still am not going to get it on my pure, if someone else wants it on theirs, im not stopping them. ive offered advice, and explained i dont really like it on pures, but i really dont have an issue with those that do. 32,606th to 99 magic || 15,388th to 99 dungeoneering || 12,647th to 99 farming14,792nd to 99 range || 24,954th to 99 herblore
Hedgehog
I think Gilf is trying to say that it gets rid of the feel of being a pure.
Sir_Kurity
It gives me the feel of 12 more inventory spaces, unlimited run energy, and lots of other perks that other pures couldn't dream of getting. O.O
alcoolj
I think it adds a new dimension to your pure. I have a low summon level, but enough for it to add a +5 (or so) to my 'look'. To me it makes my opponant think - 'OMFGORZ - noob summoner - easy prey for me' I like it when people moan about my summoning level, they ask 'why, oh why' etc, while I smack 29's on em with me R2H, then I say 'Thats why fool' Get high summoning - it helps you train, and does not hinder your pking ability at all. Like another poster stated though, be very aware of what critters attack styles are. You dont want a couple of accidental def levels now do you... Mercifull
Kinda pointless really as any combat familiar you use is going to level you up so you wont be "pure" anymore. Tbirds fight with controlled and will attack a monster if something attacks you even if you don't fight back yourself. Just use pures that give aggressive, mage, or range XP when you are in multi combat areas. Most good training areas arent really in multi combat, and the main perks of summoning for pures arent the combat familiars anyway. O.O

My point was however that one of the most useful familiars in the game, terrobird, gives CONTROLLED exp and that it something to watch out for if you are a "pure" Most good training areas arent really in multi combat, and the main perks of summoning for pures arent the combat familiars anyway.True but it just seems kind of a waste to me not being able to take full advantage of all the familiars. Sir_Kurity
So. 12 extra slots is good enough. Most people will probably use it at dragons (where its most useful) and its not multi combat. If you are low in all melee stats then gaining levels in magic or ranged will increase your combat level too. My point was however that one of the most useful familiars in the game, terrobird, gives CONTROLLED exp and that it something to watch out for if you are a "pure" So, your still a pure, as long as your not getting defense you can still train melee while your familiar trains range. Theres really no disadvantage to training another stat, just gotta get the other stats to catch up, or pk specifically with that stat. O.O
