Estonian dude
So you wanna get a job as a web designer? Well, then you really have to try to patch in there an example of every coding language you can use. Or you should just keep on one major code you can really good. Right now, the web template seems a bit too small and boring, hell, I would need a magnifying glass to read the text and look at the snapshots of the images. Well, that is since I am using FF with zoom out, but anyways. It is small even with regular zoom. It doesn't attract too much attention. So I've noticed this thread's regulars all follow similar trends. RPG is constantly dealing with psycho exes.Muggi reminds us of the joys of polygamy.Saq is totally oblivious to how much chicks dig him.I strike out every other week.Kalphite wages a war against the friend zone.Randox pretty much stays rational.Etc, etc
Nadril
For now it would be nice. What resolution are you running at? I can read the text fine @ 1680x1050, although I guess it wouldn't hurt to up the size by a pixel or two if others are having problems with it. As far as attracting attention I understand what you're saying, and I'm trying to think of a good way to solve that while keeping the same minimalistic feel. I just feel like if I add all of these awesome images and stuff that it will detract from the professionalism of the site as a whole. Now obviously it should be known that this is a WIP by all means, I'm still trying to think what to do with it. Do you have a problem with the base layout at all, because that is the first thing that needs to be set before I try and figure out what to do with the rest of it. edit: If I added some interesting animation, perhaps? Estonian dude
My resolution is 1024x768. Yes, laptop screens kinda suck. And at Connors talk, I haven't seen too much Flash based sites either. Most are HTML, PHP, CSS. And an animation could work well. So I've noticed this thread's regulars all follow similar trends. Nadril
You've got a point. I think the big thing is I want to show off my design skills more so than my coding skills, and flash seems like a good way to do that. That is also why I am thinking if I do a flash based portfolio page than my blog will be HTML/CSS. The best of both worlds, essentially. My resolution is 1024x768. Yes, laptop screens kinda suck. I see. Anyways if the text problem is a continuing issue I'll up the font size a px or two. :) Right now I'm trying to think of what I can do to spice the site up. Nadril
I don't really have any current knowledge of flash or javascript. Now given what I want to do isn't very intensive either. I think I may try and come up with a few alternative layouts as well and try out some different things.
ipkjooo
Fluid flash sizing kthx. Have your site fit any resoultion, shows professionalism. Designers and freelancers etc tend to use Flash portfolios more often then businesses and clients, allows them to add a creative twist to your site. Nadril
What if I just save that for my blog page Connorb? :) You got an MSN,it's a basic bit of code that allows you to do that, so just send the MSN so its alot easier to talk I don't really use MSN, could you just pm it to me or something? :P edit: should I do the rounded buttons or square ones? I'm still trying to decide what I can do to make this more visually appealing.
ipkjooo
I dont know the exact code, and I'm too lazy to open up flash :) Anyway pretty much rough code (look up exact syntax) Stage.scaleMode = StageScaleMode.NO_SCALE // This will make sure that the SWF doesnt scale at all in the browser window. In publish settings ensure that width and height are set to 100%
VjuliusT
I'd go for squared, the rounded ones look a bit more childish and not as professional in my opinion.
Nadril
Squared it is then. I dont know the exact code, and I'm too lazy to open up flash :) Anyway pretty much rough code (look up exact syntax) Stage.scaleMode = StageScaleMode.NO_SCALE // This will make sure that the SWF doesnt scale at all in the browser window. Like, do I just design for a large scale monitor and it will scale down properly or what?
pomar1
It's really good one! But showing it without flash is wasting its beuty :P Make flash version and give link! ----TheLair Game!----"Game isn't dead... You wish!"
VjuliusT
Have you considered having the images zoom slightly when your mouse is located over them? Like a dock? Maybe a very firm gradient like #000000-#131313/151515, would look nice instead of plain black?

As far as the background goes I don't know if a gradient covering it would look good or not, I tried it with my last site and it didn't look very nice. However I think if I could figure out some cool vector things or something to do with the background that could really spice up the site a lot.

Shiny
The scanlines look bad. Unless they're diagonal they don't look good on webpages.
hiimben
If I had to choose out of the two, I would say scanlines. They give you something to look at, but I personally believe you need more there. Even if it's Black side borders, with the grey backing up the actual text, just so you're not stretching the attention across the whole screen. Not sure if I'm explaining it well, but I think that would be best.
Kaphias
I've never liked scanlines because when I scroll up/down on the page, they create an extremely distracting "wave" effect. Maybe it's just my monitor, I dunno. Heh seems like people are 50/50 about the scanlines, like I was. :wall:
Jopie211
I'm all for no scanlines, IMO they're distracting (in a bad way) and just don't look very good. Same as Kaphias, too. I definitely agree with the dock idea though, would work very well. Chances are I will still use a lightbox-esque type of function for the thumbnails, I'm not sure how I'll go about that currently though. I will probably end up having a user click on the thumbnail to show a slightly larger version of it to the side (or something) and then click on that for a full view. Or you could just make the slightly larger version of the image as well as some more information appear when you hover your mouse over one of the thumbnails, seems a bit more user friendly and allows for some cool animations to be added. :P pixel avvy by me deviantART
Nadril
Make the scan lines follow the gradient in opacity. Problem solved! I'll see what that looks like. Or you could just make the slightly larger version of the image as well as some more information appear when you hover your mouse over one of the thumbnails, seems a bit more user friendly and allows for some cool animations to be added Interesting. Are you saying just pop it up in like a little message bubble above the "dock" with some info on it, or somewhere else? The big thing is to make it friendly enough that you can check out the full version if you want.
