Scientology Trial in France Could Ban the "Church"

Featured Replies

...pardons from hell? I've been going to church for 11 years and I've never heard of that. Going to look it up, sounds hilarious

It's actually Renaissance-time period. I can't remember what they were called, but I think it started with A.

Indulgences?

A major reason for the Protestant Reformation, if I remember correctly.

As said, papal indulgences, one of the reasons Martin Luther broke away from the catholic church.

Orthodoxy is unconciousness

the only ones who should kill are those who are prepared to be killed.

Hopefully they get it done. I will respect france more if it happens.

next step: the remaining religions.

Other religions just try to help you live a good life (or as what they believe is steps to live a good life.) They don't ask you to do a test and order people to pay for Scientology teaches or Dianetics. You can walk into a Christian Church, hear the sermon and not even have to pay, only if you wish too.

It'd still be a good step. I don't wanna have to hear people debating this god or no god crap for the rest of my life.

I agree. I will calm down on my cliche British hatred of the French if they get rid of the Cult of $cientology.

Now if only we cold get rid of it in the rest of the world. And trust me when I say its not just the British who hate the French, we Americans hate them too.

If you choose your beliefs/lifestyle simply based on what your parents want, then you are a weak minded individual and are not even worthy of calling yourself a person.

I don't know if they'll be that successful arguing on the grounds of fraud. According to the wiki definition, "fraud is the crime or offense of deliberately deceiving another in order to damage them usually, to obtain property or services unjustly."

In that case, they would have to prove that they use the E-meter to deliberately deceive people in order to damage them. According to scientologist beliefs, the E-meter is supposed to help people, so I don't know how they can prove that.

Nelly Reziga might have a case against her boss, though. I'd imagine (at least I hope) it's illegal to fire someone based on their refusal to attend a religious meeting.

The damage is taking their money

You missed the point. If it's not deliberate deception for the purpose of damaging them it's not fraud. But in any case, I'll take um_bong's advice and take this definition with a huge grain of salt. Anyone who knows of a reliable source for French law relevant to the topic is welcome to take up where I left off.

it's not deliberate deception, they just really wanted the money. Religions are the same everywhere, the only thing that makes Scientology different is it's young therefore:

It doesn't know how to discretely take money.

It is run by idiots.

It makes even less sense than other religions.

Look guys... I absolutely must be a mass baby-seal murderer!

Maybe the whole of scientology is one big satire lol.

The difference between Scientology and other religions is the intent. Every other major religion was created with the intention of explaining the universe by people who believed in what they were saying; Scientology was created by Layafette Ron Hubbard, a science fiction writer and the century's greatest con-man, who has been quoted as saying, "If a man really wanted to make a million dollars, the best way to do it would be start his own religion." Big difference.

Scientology couldn't be more fraudulent. I certainly hope other countries follow France's actions.

If absolute power corrupts absolutely, where does that leave God?

L Ron has a funny name. No wonder they call him L Ron Hubbard instead of Layafette.

I was very tempted to take a 'fun free personality test' in Manchester today but chickened out. I'm determined to do it some time, to first hand witness their [cabbage]. I'd love to see them try and sell me auditing, I've no bloody money ::'

So do we Aussies. Though we have no real reason to, it's our job to make fun of everyone.
