If it's that gateway laptop you linked to on your other topic, why? It won't even run RS very good.

I suppose if you want to keep it (i would return it and get a better one personally), use either windows firewall or download comodo. Spybot:Search&Destroy is a usefull compliment to the AV (however don't use the teatimer option). I would also recommend Auslogics disk-defragger (faster than the windows one), VLC (i can play basicially and media format you throw at it, with alot of options to adjust too), i would advice on CCleaner too (clean all temporary files and registry).

Flash, Java...

FireFox, SwiftKit (if you play RuneScape), CCleaner, Google Earth (because it's fun...), OpenOffice if you don't want to pay for Microsoft Office, Java, etc.

Browser: Firefox, Opera

Music player: foobar2000

Video playback: CCCP

Antivirus: avast!

IM: Digsby

Should get you started.

GOM Media Player (or whatever that crap looking one is, lol)

mIRC

Chrome/Firefox

Latest version of Java/Flash

Driver updates for your graphics, and peripherals

Ventrilo/Teamspeak

uTorrent

Gadwin Printscreen

xFire

FRAPS

Some things things, but if OldJoe is correct then I wouldn't even bother with all of this excess programs beyond the driver updates...Return, pay more.

VLC Media Player and Firefox/Opera (Though Firefox is much better than Opera),

If he indeed does have a crappy computer then firefox will butcher it, opera is much more stable and less resource hungry plus it has tons more features(if vanilla firefox doesn't kill the computer then addons surely will),

Media player- KM player looks a bit(ok a lot) better than vlc and it'll also play a lot of codecs.

- Winamp for music

Browser- Opera

AV- Avira is really nice for a free av, avast and avg aren't that good

Maintenance - Glary's utilities, it has *everything* need for maintenance including registry cleaner, uninstall manager, startup manager, memory optimizer, defragger, file shredder, file undeleter, file encrypter/decrypter, etc.

I agree with VLC, that is an amazing program.

Also get FormatFactory which is an awesome video/audio converter.

It'd be easier to reccomend applications if you tell us what you're primary use for the computer will be.

If you want an opensource version of photoshop: I use Gimp 2.0. Missing a few tools like Render>Clouds but its tiny, efficient, and free.
