2 British's Soldiers Bust Out Prison!!!

British troops in Iraq are on high alert as the crisis over the rescue of two British soldiers, arrested for shooting at Iraqi police, threatens to escalate further.

The incident led to an outbreak of violence, with crowds of protesters surrounding two British armoured vehicles outside Basra jail and setting them alight with petrol bombs.

British soldiers were pictured escaping from the vehicles, their clothes alight, although they were not badly injured.

The incident was sparked by two members of British special forces in civilian clothes who drove through an Iraqi checkpoint.

Police said the British soldiers opened fire, and Iraqi police responded. It is thought that one policeman was killed.

Army commander Brigadier John Lorimer said that afterwards, the special forces soldiers should have been handed over "but that did not happen" despite repeated requests.

"From an early stage, I had good reason to believe that the lives of the two soldiers were at risk and troops were sent to the area of Basra near the police station to help ensure their safety by providing a cordon," he said.

"Later...we received information that they had been handed over to militia elements.

"As a result, I took the difficult decision to order entry to the Jamiat police station. By taking this action we were able to confirm that the soldiers were no longer being held by the ISP (Iraqi police).

The men had been taken from the jail and were eventually freed from a house in Basra.

The country's authorities accused the British military of storming the jail with tanks, allowing 150 Iraqi prisoners to escape.

Defence Secretary John Reid told Sky News that only a wall surrounding the jail compound had been damaged, by an armoured personnel carrier. He had no information about any escaping prisoners.

More than 8,000 British troops are stationed in Basra - many involved in training Iraqi police officers.

The mood in Basra has been tense since a senior figure in the Shia Mehdi Army was arrested by UK troops.

In the escape The British Army used 10 tanks, 1 helicopter and royal marines to storm the iraqi prison, they ended up recovering the two special force's soldiers at a residental house is south basra!. Which brings my question why the **** were the two soldiers being held at a residental house if they were arrested by Iraqi police? Its seems to me that some of the Iraqi police that we have so excelletly trained handed our troops over to iraqi militants....

The picture of the guy climbing out of the APC was amazing. (not that I wanted them to get hurt or anything, just saying under the circumstances...)

Some managed to sneak in, some were from that Al Sadr guy (whos is kinda neutral ATM)...

After WWII, the Jews and other persecuted peoples weren't asked to reconcile with the Nazis.

Unfortuantely, we have to do so with the murderous Ba'athists who along with the "insurgents" are infiltrating many institutions and organisations that are the basis of society.

That footage of a crowd turning on an armoured vehicle was just shocking (this was just before they broke the 2 guys out of the jail). They poured petrol all over it and set it on fire. The soldiers inside had to get out. When they got out they were set on fire by the crowd and beaten and were pelted by rocks being thrown.

That's the kind of thing that makes me angry.

Yeah i seen that aswell it was a tank, i didnt know they had to get out though or were set on fire. I feel sorry for the soldiers that were in that tank they were just doing their job and had to personally feel the full force of the iraqi war.

I agree to a certain extent, but the fact is if you sign up to go to war you can hardly expect to spend your time skipping through fields of rose petals and playing snap with your chums.

Kirk and Lars I could handle. At the same time.

You don't expect to be set on by the people you are trying to protect either.

So would I.

I can't say I was suprised by the footage. I saw it one the news and didn't take a second look at it. It just seemed like another typical day in Iraq.

Still does to a point.

There will always be a part of any population that will rebel against authority, all we can do is try and keep that element under control.
