Actually X/0 is undefined. You can't apply logic to mathematics like that. On a graph, basically it would be an up and down straight line.

Okay Archi, tell me this. If a line goes straight up and down, what is its slope?

It has an incline of 180 degrees...

Well I knew you wouldn't agree. I know how you hate facing facts.

You're bending the context.

2x = x is true if and only if x = 0. Now to prove x = 0

2x = x Subtract x, the variable, not the number 0

x = 0, proving x = 0.

Meanwhile, the slope of the line that goes straight up and down is undefinied...because. Slope is defined as y/x, or rise over run. In this case the rise is either infinitely positive or negative, but the point is that it is infinite. The line doesn't change its x coordinate, so that the slope formula becomes infinity/0. This means that the slope is undefined, because dividing something by 0 does not make it 0.

On the contrary, a line with slope 0 would be horizantal and parallel to the x axis. The line above was slope undefined and parallel to the y axis.

The only difference between a disagreement between friends, an argument between strangers, and a feud between enemies is the ability to reconcile.

2x = x Subtract x, the variable, not the number 0

2x = x Divide x, the varriable, not the number 0.

Thus 2=1

Abide by the rules....

So basically... Dividing by 0 is possible, since we can make a line to represent it....thats pretty much what I got from that.

Well I knew you wouldn't agree. I know how you hate facing facts.

You can still subtract by the variable x if it is 0, but you cannot divide by it.

2x = x

Let's test if it works

2(0) = 0

0 = 0

2x = x

Dividing by x is not possible because x equals 0. The first time I did it, it's legitimate because X - X = 0.

So basically you get

2x = x

Subtract x from both sides

x + x - x = 0

Combining like terms gives you x = 0

-------------------

Dividing by 0 is possible, but it gives you the answer undefined. Meaning you cannot use it in an equation that way.

dividing by zero results in -∞, since, like Archi said, if you have five apples and share them between no one, not even yourself, no one gets anything, yet each (nonexistant) person you gave them to recieves infinite apples. Thus .../0=-∞

Wrong.

Either you are dealing with algebra, in which case you must treat X as the unknown, and thus cannot assume it is 0.

Thus you can divide by X.

Or you are dealing with numbers, in which case you can't subtract 0 because it would have no effect.

So you are basically saying...you can do it, but it is inconvinent if you do?

Well I knew you wouldn't agree. I know how you hate facing facts.

That's not true. Dividing by 0 leads to undefined, because basically every value could be "true".

------

Philosophically you're correct, but mathematically you're still dividing by 0. You're supposed to not know that you are dividing by 0, but you are dividing by 0 because I just proved that x = 0 in the first equation.

Sigh... The fact of the matter is that Mathematics doesn't work as has been proven.

Dividing by 0 creates anomolus results, which undermine mathematics as a whole.

Therefore Mathematics fails.

Well I knew you wouldn't agree. I know how you hate facing facts.

It's because we keep trying to apply philosophy to mathematics. Mathematics is only truly mathematics if every step builds off of an irrefutable base, like 1 + 1 = 2, since that is by definition.

Yeah, thats true...0 is like a bad brick that brings everything bigger than subtraction and addition down. Since it doesn't sit well with multiplication or division.

Well I knew you wouldn't agree. I know how you hate facing facts.

After reading the last few pages, I have decided that mathematics is unseemly and should be regarded as an enemy to mankind.

Erikio is attacked by a swarm of missiles, which completely bypass the defences and somehow are not even slightly effected by the atomsphere, followed by a perfect execution, landing in the waters and destroying the soil and nutrional worth of the planet. Effectively making it barren for the next twenty years.

5 Billion farmers were also killed in the attack. (sorry to trifle you with such small figures :rolleyes: )

(Sorry Retech, two 1s for your defences, followed by a 16, 19 and 20 for the attack itself. )

Well I knew you wouldn't agree. I know how you hate facing facts.

Yes and I wonder who did that.... (looks at poster above). On a side note the Malaysian empires anti space defenses are being increased 100 fold on every world.

Interesting. Well I've basically left Hegemony by now, so I give my empire to Sere/Dusty. There are still 200 billion on Capiah, I think most of the people on Erikio (no sustinance for them though), and several trillion eggs that can be turned into battle ready soldiers at a secret location. Also, there are 100,000 PP worth of production per turn. I think that's basically it.

Hm. I wonder if the computational power of the matrioshka brain would be able to launch an attack on the fabric of the universe.

2Xeo5.png

That means you can't destroy the universe. :)

We still have Doom, Sere, Rocco, Grim, and Dusty, as well as others.

I am mildly active... I just haven't been participating in the massive discussions about math.

The Matrioshka brain attempts to tear spacetime in the large empty space which is farther out than it, just for the luls.
