Maybe they came in a giant spaceship which exploded around 500 BC, prompting some Norse Mythlogy. Most of them died, so the species had to lay low (they lost all their technical knowledge because their parents all died when giving birth). They lived in the sea, independantly developing technology on the ocean bottom, scavenging on food that had dropped down, and occasionally went to the surface to hunt a few fish.
