One for the history books....

So I like history and just thinking back into what has been my comparatively short lifetime of 16 years and what has happened in it i wondered.... what will be in my grand-children's, or great-grand-children's history books? I'm curious what you think will be in those pages, people, events, laws passed, speeches given, quotes, inventions, put them all.

9/11 will definitly be one of the biggest events in modern history. Along with the Iraq War and Obama's presidency (on that fact that he is the first African American president, it has yet to be seen if his actions will go down well with history as well). Bush will be remembered as a good President, no matter what you guys say or think. He did the best that he could given the circumstances that he inherited.

One thing that will be overlooked will be this recession. They happen quite frequently, so it is not major enough to be remembered.

Thanks for your input Kcdragon, and I agree bush will be listed as a pretty good prez, Abraham Lincoln wasn't actually very popular in his day. Obviously, 9/11 will go down in history, as will the War on Terror. Does anyone think Michael Jackson will be listed? I realize he has a sketchy reputation at best, but most people believe he was a big influence on music and culture in his heyday.

I bet Michael Jackson will be mentioned in the history books. You know those cultural sections of chapters? There's no way he's evading one of those.

Micheal Jackson was the King of Pop. He will be remembered in a way similar to the King of Rock.

I don't know about that, they've recorded several of the early "Panics" as they were known, like the Panic of 1837. I don't think they were major, either. Maybe, I don't really remember.

Everyone I know hates Bush, so I don't know if he's going to be remembered as a good president in other countries. From outside view, Bush is the one that was the bad one, and also the one, in my opinion, that made everyone hate the United States.

While we've covered events and people, does anyone think the iPod will be mentioned? I believe it was introduced in 2000? Correct me if I'm wrong. It is now a HUGE thing, but is it history book worthy? And on the subject of Bush, he didn't make everyone hate America, its a simple case of "It's lonely at the top.". I don't think a lot of people these days would like me as a president, because i would have a zero [cabbage] stand, for instance you remember those Somali pirates? I read about them capturing boats before all that hubbub when it was an American ship, and my first thought was, SEALS. The United States had the people to cut the crap, and I'm sure other countries do to but nobody "had the balls" so to speak.

We should form a club.

I hope my birth ends up in them ... But, otherwise, I don't think there have been any huge events. Then again, the Battle of Agincourt was just another brawl for Henry V! Someone told him he should put it in the books, and he said, "Ye olde timey villiain! Offeth with thy headeth!"

Paraphrased.

catch it now so you can like it before it went so mainstream

That's how far they're gonna go. "The Panic of 2008."

It's funny, when this thing first started I wondered this same question. Will they call it "The September Panic" or "The October Panic"? But ironically, it's still going on in August of the next year... -.-

About the Bush thing, yeah he won't be remembered as a horrible president. They almost never do. If Watergate never was found out, Nixon would of been known as a decent president.

We're in the Technology Age. An Ipod, though significant to us, will be insignificant to history. It'll be a minor detail in one of those huge history books you have to read for a college level class.

I'm sorry, but without knowing who those people are that means absolutely nothing. Just about everyone under the age of 16 (at least) hates Bush because that's the message that has been trickled down to them. The people who constantly called Bush an idiot were generally idiots themselves, and it was just joke that stupid people made to feel smart.

With regards to the Iraq war - The United States and allies did what was required of them to take steps against very real threats. Now, the day to day happenings of the war were hardly ideal at all, but I shudder to think how different things could have been if not for many of the Bush administration's foreign policies.

This is actually going a lot better than I expected, please by all means keep input coming, and also try to stray away from obvious thing like Obama, and 9/11. For instance North Korea's nuclear weps. Though there is surely more to unfold before we are done with North Korea as of now, what do you think?

And btw interesting, and now that i think about it probably a correct view of the iPod.

So what about trials? I don't really follow much legal stuff, and I'm sure the new Latino lady will be in the history books (forgive me her name escapes me) but can anyone think of any trials that had a big impact?

While I realize most people might think me unqualified to say this, but young people are easily impressionable, I myself have often "believed everything I heard" despite warning from my mother. So the 20-25 years doesn't surprise me, especially since drafting was blown way out of proportion and it NEVER HAPPENED during the War on Terror, and the 20-25 age group is right in that ideal ball park. i think people's dislike of Bush was a combination of media blowing things out of proportion and his "get things done attitude".

Like kcdragon said, it will just be a minor detail that students will have to memorize for their tests. I can imagine some future high school conversation going something like this:

"Hey, how did you do on the test?"

"The only problem I missed was the iPod one. Stupid iPods, they're just music players, why would we need to know about music players?!"

"I don't know. They've got a stupid name too - I mean, who would call a music player an iPod? Where's the pod? What's the i got to do with it?!"

"No clue. I really don't like studying the technology era. I mean, some of it's interesting, but I find the first half of the 22nd century much more interesting to learn about."

"Yeah I totally understand. Hey, want to go to the Tele-Hub after school with me and Jared? We're going to go to South-East Africa and zap some monkeys!"

"Hell yes I do!"

Thinking about what i said earlier about the Somali pirates, do you think events like that would make it? While it seems like a small event, so does the assassination of the Archduke that started WWI, maybe it is a turning point or demonstration of foreign policy? I'm sure no one thought the U2 getting shot down over Russia was a big thing but it has made it into history books.

The U2 incident was huge. It revealed that the U.S. government was lying to the people about operations in Russia.

The most i ever learned about the U2 incident was that it proved the Russians knew we where there, and that elevation didn't mean safety, but then I have 2 more years of high school to grind through....

Just doing a quick Wiki search of the U2 incident i realize I was wrong, but still, it kind of proves my point, one plane gets shot down, American public is angry, relations with Russia further deteriorate. That's a lot of hubbub over 1 plane.

That get things done attitude was the one good thing about Bush. I don't see much else that was good about him though, he was just the guy that wanted war for me. I don't see any good reason why one would go to war.

My good man/woman I am trying very hard not to become angry atm. No good reason to go to war? the slaughter of thousands, the attacking of the military headquarters of these United States of America, the mere fact that foreign warriors(despite their tactics they are warriors) attacked us on our home turf. Please spare me the Bush organized it thing, then why in the heck did terrorists claim responsibility, why did they run and hide when the Iron Fist Of Resolve came to open up a can of whoop-azz?? On second thought I don't want to hear your explanation as it will only make me angrier I'm sure.
