ok, nothing will be found, you people go on thinking its cheap and easy to aim at a tiny point somewhere that it would take 2,000,000,000 years to walk to, and then have to come back because you aren't recognised or because there is nothing there, which there isn't

could someone please add at least some of each of these numbers to their message? I ran out of characters, writing out addition, multiplication, etc... , as that is what "they" are most likely to understand, if they exist--Languages are varied, but math is fairly basic, especially in binary, and figuring out what means "+" or "*" wouldn't be difficult given the number sequences.

Pi and e? Why pi and e?

Pi + e = Pie.

For all you people who sent hostile messages, I hope we get hostile messages in return. Then, we get get some star wars going. :D

It's definitely not hard, seeing as we already have the technology. The only efforts that need to be made are around the effect of turning a machine on, aiming it at precise co-ordinates and feeding it a message. Nobody in the right mind would think that this is going to result in a message back, you aren't enlightening anyone. All you're doing is throwing out baseless numbers and statements.

the possibilty of life existing elsewhere in the universe is high, but you cannot know how developped they are, and it is unlikely that they are in the same stage of evolution as us, i mean, how could we know if some other planet was inhabited by something similar to humans and discovered there may be life on our planet? maybe they sent us (the earth) some messages and signals, but in prehistoric times, meaning the signals were unnoticed.

Current theories on the age of earth and the age of the universe point to extraterrestrials being more likely to have lived longer than us, not the other way around. According to Wikipedia, the earth is about 4 billion years old and the universe about 15. I would think that this means if we found other life, it would be more likely that they have formed in the 11 billion years earth hasn't been around rather than the 4 billion years it has been.

Our planet is young and still growing in knowledge. We are hostile and unaware, but there are a few of us that are merely curious. Hello & welcome to our home.

My message \'

There are three sides to any argument: your side, my side and the right side.

Sending a message to aliens looks like a waste of time, unless they happened to understand English.

Anyway, the question from the FAQ left me cold: What happens if someone or something responds?

I was shocked to know there are actually people responsible for answering, knowing that our first contact with other intelligent life beings and the whole the future of our civilization would actually depend on them.

I think the point was to develop some kind, any kind of communication.

Eh, SETI failed. Can't blame you for being sceptical.

I see some flaws.

1. How could the damn aliens know what English is? This is of course assuming that there would even be life on that planet. The next few points are based on the assumption life forms exist on the planet.

2. What if the life forms are not advanced enough to send probes/reply? We'd spend centuries waiting for an answer.

3. What if the life forms are hostile? Really, I'm not interested in being slain by aliens.

Those aren't flaws, they are accounted for improbabilities, discussed and stated many times in the previous pages.

Yeah, I've just gone through them. They just popped in when I saw what this was about.

Considering we can translate ancient Egyptian texts, I'd imagine a highly intelligent life form could translate binary.

How do you know that there's nothing there.. space is huge

have a look at this awesome video. It might no be cheap and easy, but so what? Research costs.

Well, you're right, as long as the aliens could identify the signals as artificial, it should work. It just seems some people think binary is a universal language of some sorts. Not that aliens should have to translate binary into English.

Pictures are the universal language. Only problem is that they are far too big to transmit over large distances.

If you can understand: We mean no harm. We are curious. BE CAREFUL. DO NOT SHOOT.

First row is thus: 314159265358979323 in binary, well the digits, - is 1 _ is 0. I'm hoping they understand.

second row is thus: ... -.- it's english. go away.

Balance may be power, but chaos is still pretty damn fun.
