Art?

NACHO

Recommended Posts

I don't understand why some of the stuff on this forum is considered art.

1 thing i don't get is a landscape. Typing a few calculations into a random terrain generator then adding a few surface textures is not art. Where is the creativity?

Another thing i see that people call "gfx art" or whatever are abstract sigs. I think they look cool, but i don't consider them art because there is no creativity. seeing 1 billion things that all look the same, how amusing.

just thought i'd post my opinions. I'd like to hear yours too, so please post.

NACHO, I'd love to see you go into a landscaping program, "punch in a few random caculations" and have something pop out good.

Art is what you make of it. A lot of my landscapes are inspired by songs, I at least think that it has some meaning behind it, even if its just me.

Random calculations?

I'd appreciate it if you'd at least give the program the credit for that it does infact have sliders :P. Maybe you find that more creative?

...but... if you think there's no art in Terragen and mayb ein 3DSM, why don't you go make a landscape suitable for a Terraspace in it?

After working in Terregan for a little less than a day, it's a much more complicated process than what you have specified. You can't use a random generated terrain and expect it to look good. Much sculpting goes into this. I have a very new found respect for Nadril; even if it hasn't showed as of recently. You must try it. A good landscape cannot be achieved through your "random calculations and numbers." And yes Cal, lol it does have sliders. That made my day.

The thing that bugs me about terregen is that you really can get stunning results from little to no artistic work. This fact makes it hard to critique terregen peices because you don't know whether it's good aspects were intentional or an accident..

Who said something has to be entirely intentional to be art?

Then again it's all the viewers opinion.

Art is art. Art isn't good art, nor is it bad art; it's just art. You can't change the definition just because you dislike something - trust me, i've tried.

TG is a waste. Thats a singular opinion, not a fact - but as I have a right to that, others have a right to think (and do) what they choose to. If they think they have something to gain from it then it is their right to take action. TG is art and so is "Modern Art", even if some of us wish the word didn't apply.

Preaty much summed it up there Sub. Some people see things in stuff that other's don't, we just have to accept that.

But it's not very artsy to get a the deffinition of the word art from a dictionary. But let's say we follow this, what's beauty? What's the deffinition of beauty.

Who defines what art is? I went to the National Gallery the other week and there was a bronze sculpture of a black bin bag.

Note "conscious production", which is why I hardly consider most abstract pieces or any sort of grunge as art. A lot of that stuff is really just random, half-arsed brushing.

Props to the people who actually compose their art, though.

Yep. *takes a deep breath* But not everybody thinks the same about what is quality that gives pleasure to the mind or senses and is associated with such properties as harmony of form or color, excellence of artistry truthfullness, and originality. :P Of course there is somekind of general opinion, but otherwise it's just different for everybody, I think.

see, thats your problem. you jump on anyone that disagrees with you, and thats why i really don't like you. Stating an opinion is fine, but going, "why don't you try it" is just stupid. get over yourself.

ty for everyone's comments. i like to see what other people think

edit- i'm 100% positive i will get flamed for this, because belittling people on this forum is fine unless they are popular, then its a sin worse than murder.

You're getting flamed for your ignorance, not for belittling people.

You've seen numerous definitions now that validate a lot of what you don't call art. I do have a problem with some abstract art. Considering most of the 3d renders not planned out and people just hit some buttons and then work from there. But then what about the post work? The brushing in PS?

What about someone who does Photo Manipulation? That is no different. Honestly, I'm going to make a horrible comparison, but if someone takes a flower port and paints it many could/would call it art. The 3d render = flower pot. There's no point in arguing this.

I could try and argue that Rap isn't music and millions would disagree with me. And they're probably right.

Composition is a huge part of art. Infact, it may be considered the basis of art. Composition is found in the "Flower Pot" painting, Abstract, and even Terragen. Proper composition takes artistic skill - that is, to place objects in a way to make the illusion/reality of beauty.

Like I said, can't change art - even if I wanted to.

Art can be anything, at any time, at any place. It can be gone in a second or stay for eternity. All you have to do is open your mind for it. The problem is that people disagree about tastes, but you know what they say about tastes...

I told you you know what they say! Don't look at me like that! I'm not gonna say it!

Ryan, i think you missread what i typed, or i just said it wrong. I wasn't talking about getting flamed on my opinions about landscapes and abstract sigs (btw, i was talking about brushed abstracts, where people use other's brushes. if they make their own it always looks so much nicer because of originality.) I never said anything about 3d renders (unless you count TG renders), i know how hard it can be to make an original one, so please don't put words into my mouth.

i was talking about this

lmao, go make urself a landscape better than nadrils with ur random poop (lack of a better word xD) and then get back to us

Nadril, i'd love to see you calculate how far a ball drops in 34.6643 seconds. i know a lot of people can't do this, but does that make it art? no. So was this even necessary in your opinion, or is it just to protect your feeling of superiority (i made up a word since i don't know the real word to fit there.)

Well that would depend on the height you drop it from, the weight of the ball, and many other varying factors. Art can be anything, even that problem of the ball. Figuring out could be an art. So really it all depends on who's looking at it. They may take in the answer of your question as info or as art. It depends.

NACHO, my first reply was there for the simple fact of trying to argue my point. I decided to argue it by Telling you that if terragen is just this, random button pressing you say, for you to do it your self. If it's suposably that easy, anyone should be able to do it?

Anyways, the point is, art is art. You can tell if someone is just "winging" it and doing whatever, or if someone actualy has a goal for the piece.
