Taxes, taxes, taxes...

Featured Replies

I hope I don't get in trouble but here's the truth: They'll tax your nuts off.

And not even give you anything worthwhile for your money.

Yeah, who needs hospitals? And police stations, those are so overrated. And the kids today don't like school either way, so why do we have them?

Stupid government :shame:

Well, I was rerring to bridges to nowhere, constant waste in government, corruption, complication of the tax code K street lobbyists, etc.

And around here, they've cut off so much funding for police stations and hospitals it's not even funny. But hey, we're going to get a 50 billion dollar light rail from Tampa to Orlando that'll take 20 years to complete and no one will use.

And yes, government is stupid. Very stupid. And very corrupt. And unable to run anything remotely well. Unless it's meant to blow [bleep] up.

A progressive income tax was one of the main tenets of Communism was put forth in the Communist Manifesto by Karx Marx. Just wanted to point that out.

Oh, and I'm a supporter of the Fairtax. It's all rather complicated to get into on here, but take a look. http://www.fairtax.org

Basically, it's a revenue neutral tax code, ie we take the same amount of cash as we do now, andit's a National Sales Tax that would replace all other forms of federal taxation.

Adam Smith supported progressive taxation (I'm pretty sure you know who he is).

How the hell is taxing people based upon how much they earn "communist"? How can taxing people on higher incomes by a larger percent be compared to the state having ownership of the means of production? Do you even know what communism is?

There is a difference between what Marx wanted and what people have called communist. Obviously, if you want to give everyone the same amount of money, and you don't want to kill everyone you would use something like a progressive tax.(no that doesn't mean I think the US is going communist)

Communism isn't even about "giving everyone the same amount of money"... the fact is progressive tax has existed before Marx was even born, the word "communism" is pretty much jused used as a "shock-word" by far-right nutcases use to scare people.

I was talking about how our government when it comes to local stuff is absolutely awful. And let's face it Government doesn't run things well. They don't do things well. They just screw stuff up. Or they get involved in matters that aren't anyone elses business, like drugs or prostitution.

You're ignoring every good thing the government has done and using examples of only bad things. And it's a damn good thing they get involved with drugs and prostitution.

What are you, 16? Why do you keep acting like you could do a better job?

24

And it's none of their business. Drugs should have the same restrictions as alcohol. If you're not under the influence in public or behind the wheel, if no one's business if you do drugs.

And prostitution is also no one's business. That is your body and you should be able to do with it whatever you want. Government has no right to restrict sex between consenting adults in any manner, whether it be homosexuals having sex, or people having sex for money.

The only things that shopuld ever be illegal are things that violate someone else's right to life, liberty, or their property.

How? Pornography and clinical medication are the same things, only regulated.

The idea of taxing doesn't bother me at all. But like someone said earlier, spending it on things that we only have a 0.001% chance of using at war instead of our education system (which is falling apart in Florida tremendously) is just stupid. Also, a lot of laws are absolute bull, such as the drinking age being 21 instead of 18. There is a lot the government has been successful with, but there is still a lot that needs to be fixed.

Besides, a government that adapts is an ideal one. Things should always be changing since things always have a potential of getting better.

It was only changed to 21 becaose of all the high school kids getting killed behind the wheel. I don't mind idiots like that killing themselves, but when they kill other innocent people I kinda understand. I'm pretty neutral on that.

I thought you said the government shouldn't be involved with drugs? That means that alcohol wouldn't even have the 18 age limit, anyone would be able to do it.

I know, it is a bit of a sticky situation. I don't like the means, but you can't argue with the ends. If I really came down to it, I'd really put it down to 18.

Because I don't think kids should have alcohol, but once you're a legal adult, then it's your choice. So long as you don't do anything that might harm someone else, like driving.

Your education system wouldn't exist if there was ever a war on American soil.

If that's what it takes to get rid of our current government school system, I'm personally prepared to make that sacrifice.

Our education system, as it is, only stands a small chance if we got rid of the teachers unions. It probably is beyond saving, but with them gone, there's a chance.

Something you people need to understand, and that the US government needs to understand:

Rich people have money. Money enables them to start businesses and offer jobs to other people.

In turn this gives more people more money. Rich people continue to have money because their businesses make money.

Rich people are usually smart (enough to have invested/had an idea to make the money) and can and will attempt to defeat the (usually excessive) taxation of their wealth.

If the government attempts to tax rich people more, they have less incentive to continue gaining money and less incentive to attempt (ie, hire employees and create businesses) to create more money.

Rich people will hoard their money and will not contribute to society if there is 'no point' (ie they are taxed excessively) to make more money by contributing to society.

Wealthy people have money, which enables them to create jobs, which enables more people to better themselves and creates more cashflow in the economy.

Rich -> Jobs -> Money -> Economy

To the FairTax (which so far I agree with, 23% is a little steep, but no IRS/SS/Medicaid/income taxes might make it worth it)

Rich people have more money, so they spend more.

In spending more, they are taxed more (but at an equal rate) than the less wealthy.

Government still gets their money, rich are more apt to give it.

And it's none of their business. Drugs should have the same restrictions as alcohol. If you're not under the influence in public or behind the wheel, if no one's business if you do drugs.

Is it just me or are your views ironically quite liberal? Regardless, I agree with you to a degree on drugs. Certain drugs can be used recreationally while allowing the user to continue to be a functioning member of society (ie. somebody who can work and pay tax). However, there are other drugs that leave the user incapable of holding down a job when abused in the long term. The former should be legally (but restricted) and the latter should still be illegal. I think prostitution should be legal as it allows the business to be monitored and controlled, prohibition has never worked - it only continues because it would be political suicide to legalise it.

hawkxs - Taxation doesn't discourage people from getting wealthier. Even if you make enough to jump up a tax bracket you will still make more money (after tax) than you were getting after tax in the lower tax bracket. That is how the progressive tax system is designed to work. Also you fail to note that wealthier people tend to be able to employ tax accountants to exploit loopholes in the law so that they can avoid paying as much tax as they should.

and in our own despair, against our will, comes wisdom to us by the awful grace of God.

After a while, it will. As has been proposed somewhere, if they levy additional taxes on the rich to pay for other stuff, they'll eventually be losing so much of their income that they will no longer be motivated to be wealthy.

Rich people are usually smart (enough to have invested/had an idea to make the money) and can and will attempt to defeat the (usually excessive) taxation of their wealth.

Accountants, foreign bank accounts, etc. is what I meant with that phrase.

What country is gonna invade America exactly? Cuba  ? The main reason the US "defence" budget is so high is because of American imperialism around the world (700+ bases in 140+ countries isn't it?), not to prevent a "war on American soil".

Uh huh, who's gonna invade? Canada? Besides, stripping away the military is a stupid idea, but funding stupid projects and making things you don't need is.

Trolling about the useage of troll?

PATHETIC.

I'm fine with people using it occasionally but it's become the most prevalent insult on TIF now and most of you still don't even know what the hell it means.

That's because you think of things a bit too much in conservative/liberal. I'm a libertarian, so I basically believe in limited government. That means hands off on pretty much everything. Drugs, prostitution, religion, taxes, etc.

The easiest way to describe it as conservative fiscally, though conservative are hardly fiscally responsible. GWB in his 8 years did not once veto a spending bill of any kind. And liberal on social issues, like drugs and sex.
