September 3, 200916 yr I was on a gaming site, browsing through the forums and playing games when I came across this: I don't know about you, but it looks alot like a Penance Healer to me. I don't know if Jagex takes half their updates from other games, but this is a bit sad. It's not that hard to come up with a new monster (in this case a pet). I'm just mad at how much copying goes on behind peoples backs. I guess I can't really do much about it, but this is one of those things that really make me grind my teeth. Real men get 99 str on cows 8-).
September 3, 200916 yr Dragons in Runescape look the same as Dragons from books... Are Jagex copying these books? And dont say Dragons are real, because much like the Penance hat, they're not...
September 3, 200916 yr There is also a Dungeons and Dragons monster called an Otyugh which looks very similar. [hide=][/hide] I agree with Gin. In games, books, and movies monsters are recycled all the time. At least they are creative enough to make things like Abyssal Demons and Bloodvelds. Some games offer nothing more than your cliched goblins and skeletons.
September 3, 200916 yr Well the picture in the opening post was probably stolen from Commander Keen anyways. That's just how it goes. Existing ideas are used in a new context. Nothing wrong with that. It's not that easy to sprout a whole world with hundreds of different monsters existing in it. And about every fantasy game uses orcs nowadays. They're continuously being copied. Though nobody ever complains about that. Twitter ||| Google+ ||| Facebook ||| LinkedIn ||| My very interesting weblog about science
September 4, 200916 yr I'm just mad at how much copying goes on behind peoples backs. I guess I can't really do much about it, but this is one of those things that really make me grind my teeth. You'll find that there are very, very few truly original ideas, and almost every story mechanic has been done before.
September 4, 200916 yr I agree with all the people who posted above me. Orcs, goblins, dwarves, elves, dragons, giants, etc etc etc. These have been copied millions of times. Is anyone complaining? No, because they first copied the ideas from ancient myths. And the creators of the myths are long dead. If you're going to charge everyone who "copies", you're going to have a hard time chasing down thousands of companies who allegedly "copied" your ideas. September 4, 200916 yr At least all the components are blended in a mix that created something unique. Twitter ||| Google+ ||| Facebook ||| LinkedIn ||| My very interesting weblog about science
September 4, 200916 yr At least all the components are blended in a mix that created something unique. Yep. Every time a person creates something, they are referring to something else that already exists and adding their own creative input to it. It's just a matter of mixing aspects together and creating a whole new product. That's why we can't visualize a color that we've never seen before.

For example, sliced bread was made for a loaf of bread. It has simply been innovated to become more efficient. Even in Runescape they'll innovate their existing designs and make new ones... For example, Rats and Brine Rats, Kalphites and Kalphite warriors. Jagex are taking one example that may already exist in another game, putting in a simple form then innovating it over time... Thats how progress is made.

And this was from a game called Spineworld. I agree with all the people who posted above me. Orcs, goblins, dwarves, elves, dragons, giants, etc etc etc. These have been copied millions of times. September 4, 200916 yr But Jagex aren't modifiying their own ideas... They're taking an idea used by millions of other sites and putting a hat and a shield on it...
September 5, 200916 yr How do you know Jagex ripped it off from that website? Maybe that website ripped it off from Jagex, or it was just pure coincidence, as: Bowling pins with an eye, I'm pretty sure that was hard to come with. Click here for an awesome suggestion to revive smithing!
September 5, 200916 yr Bowling pins with an eye, I'm pretty sure that was hard to come with. I lol'd irl. It's not that creative of a monster to begin with no need to complain really
September 6, 200916 yr Saradomin Sword = Creativity. 'Nuff said. 45,657th to 99 Range 29/09/09 , 41,018th to 99 Mage 13/11/09__________________
September 7, 200916 yr Saradomin Sword = Creativity. 'Nuff said. Hmm, not the best example. I mean, its just a sword version of the Godsword, so yeah, its alright i guess but nothing special. Void armour however i think is one of their better streaks of creativity.
September 7, 200916 yr nah more like that a whip is one of the most powerfull weapons in the game... http://sign.tip.it/1/2/79/260/essiw.png Retired item crew I would like to be credited as essiw at the website update & corrections forum. Thanks!
September 7, 200916 yr Or maybe being the only major MMORPG to offer any real quests? :P But, honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if the ideas were completely independent of each other, or if the programmer borrowed from Jagex. And also, it doesn't matter too much, considering the entire concept of BA is pretty innovative. A little graphical "drawers block" or whatever you might call it was probably the cause of this. Thanks to Uno for the awsome sig <3
