Skiing/Boarding

With the ski/snowboard season nearly upon us, I ask you, tif: Do any of you ski or snowboard?

I got a new pair of Volkl twintips yesterday, big step up from my old skiis (Rossignol scratch pros). I also picked up a new pair of goggles, and hopefully will pick up a helmet in about a week. I'll dig up pictures in a bit if I can.

I have a really fancy snowboard I won in a mccain/global tv contest a few years back, it's a fancy rossignol snowboard, with shiny bindings. I've yet to use it. Haven't snowboarded in years. I think I'd prefer to ski.

Board. I have a trip planned to Vail, Colorado in January. I have a gov't job, where I get 4 hours of annual leave and 4 hours of sick leave every paycheck, plus every other Friday off....I am going to be in Vail for over 10 days, with only taking off 4 days of work. Plus, I will be getting paid while I board.... Ka-ching!

I currently ride a Santa Cruz Smear, with Ride LX bindings.

I ski, nothing to fancy though, I only get to go maybe 3 days a year since I don't live near a mountain (well I do, but it's the crappiest mountain in existence. I could have skied the hardest trail on it when I was 8). This is going to be my 11th year skiing though I think. I'd say I'm decent.

This is one of the mountains I usually ski. http://www.cannonmt.com/

I've never skied in the west though, so I can't say I've really experienced all types of skiing. I'm not all that fond of deep powder though.

Then you haven't had enough experience on it.

Deep powder requires way too much effort to keep your nose up, but once you've got the muscles and the endurance.. there's nothing better. Not many mountains here have any unless you're lucky, I'm hoping to take a trip to Banff this winter holiday though

I've been a few times, I really loved it. I have pretty terrible balance naturally so I had to really work at it to be able to do simple things. I'm not allowed to go anymore (too dangerous) but 6 of my mates are going to Canada in about 2 weeks for 6 months or so to mostly ski and board :( Soo jealous.

my two sets of skis, the volkl are my expert level skis, and the K2's are my intermediate/rock skis/dont care what happens to them skis

i know im ganna get another pair this winter or next winter but i haven't really decided what i want..probably something shoter since my volkl are a little to long for me and are a pain during sharp turns, and the K2's are definitely not a high level for me any more

only been skiing a year, but last season i went about 20 times, went from bunny hill, to skiining in and out of the glads like it was nothing. took 2 weeks off due a shoulder dislocation, worst two weeks of my life. Love the sport alot, dunno what i'd do if i couldn't anymore, Ski in WV

It does take more effort, but I wouldn't say "way too much effort." Sounds like you have the wrong skiis/board for it.

If I tried to take my K2 Spitfire into powder, I would drown. With my Santa Cruz Smear, I float over it.

This is what I'm thinking of picking up for my next backcountry board:

Anybody have any advice for 180's/360's I just cant manage to get around fast enough. Probably just need more practice.

I don't have twin tips also, that makes it a little harder.

Also, does anybody have any experience with backside ski's (the really wide ones)?

I love skiing, and plan on going many times this year. The only problem is that getting out to a hill/mountain is really hard for me. The closest ski hill is 45 minutes, and not exactly what I'd call the best. Quite frankly I hope to be getting rails this season, but I can't actually do any real tricks at the moment. I'm kind of wondering whether it's easier to learn spins or rails first, and a good way to do either. I have a mediocre pair of all-mountain skis, and really hope I can get a job soon to pay for lift tickets and maybe new skis.

Jaerk - Right before you jump, twist your body the oppoisite way that you intend to spin, and undwind as you go up. Always keep your eyes on where your going to land.

By the way, if your right handed, turn left, left handed, go right.

Believe in the spin, really. You have got to have the move in your head, see yourself doing it. Give it everything you got. Try to focus on the landing as fast as possible (which means, watch the direction you are going to spin). I think the head is the most important thing. The body goes where the head is going. If I fail my 360s, it is because I didn't try and spot the landing asap. I must say I'm still very nooby with 360s though and have lots of rooms for improvements. Also, try to lean forward when you launch yourself into the spin. Since the jump is facing up and the landing facing down, you will have to do a little bit of vertical rotation too. Not leaning forward was a very major reason for me failing them once I got the spin. I always ended up landing leaning too much backwards, and crashing + hurting my calfs like hell sometimes.

and 45 minutes! That's nothing, consider yourself lucky. I have to drive 7 hours, but then I am in the Alps which are the best. I honestly can't really think of how you can live in a decent place (not a ski village that's dead in the summer) closer than 45 min away from the mountain.

huh I thought I added some pics, but they got erased by pressing back or something... (and this topic also didnt get bumped up, wtf is happening)

I'd drive 7 hours to ski in the alps without a doubt. It's about 4 hours from where I live to the mountain I usually ski, but my grandparents house is only about an hour away so we stay there. I'm hoping to go skiing during my break in December. Screw christmas, I want to ski.

I'd do it too, if I had a car. But even then, It's not like I could say, hmm nothing to do this afternoon, let's go skiing. Even for the weekend, 14 hours of driving is a bit much. So for now, this is just 1 or 2 weeks a year. (and 7 hours is the bare minimum btw, when we go with the family it takes like 9-10 hours in total or something)

30 minutes to a hill, 1.5 hours to a really good hill, 2.5 hours to a mountain. I still have not gone to the mountain yet, which I very much want to do. Sucks that I can't drive until this damn driving centre strike is over, and then I need to convince my parents to let me take their car 2-3 hours away from home, with just me and my friends.

I love skiing and snowboarding so much, easily my favourite things to do. I can only go every 2 years when I go to the states. It's so damn expensive in australia, lift tickets at the crappiest resort here are like the same as heavenly, lake tahoe.

I used to go skiing/boarding every year. I skiied for the first like 7 years because that's what everyone in my family did and then I finally tried boarding when I was maybe 13 and then I did that for a few years. After a while though I got really tired of both of them. They just didn't feel fun anymore. I loved going to the mountains and just being in the cold weather with hot chocolate and a book or whatever, but I sort of stopped enjoying the sports :x

I used to ski when I was younger but now I much rather prefer snowboarding. Mainly because I was all like "Oh wow boarding is what all the cool guys do!" Lol. I even have a hard time skiing now, can't relearn it haha. But either way I like it better now, after I went on a trip to Wisconsin with my friends and they showed me how to snowboard a LOT better. Now I love it.

When I go with my family, my much older cousin lends me his snowboard that's like $300 :P.

The odd thing is though is that when I used to skateboard I was goofy, then when I tried snowboarding goofy I had a hard time, and then switched to regular and it was a hell lot easier.

The only down side to that though is that regular feels really weird to me but I can actually handle the board a lot easier.

Nevertheless, snowbarding [bleep]ing rocks. :D

What's a sig?

I was reading about skiing in New Zealand, and they were very positive about it. But I can imagine what you mean. Here in Norway most resort are pretty small too, and they cost like the same as the big one in the Alpes.
