Windows 7 Wireless problems

Mercifull

Recommended Posts

Just like many other people on Windows 7 support forums on the internet I am having wireless issues. I will be connected to my router and then all of a sudden internet access will stop and then either it disconnects me totally or gives me "no internet" or "limited access" messages. Trouble shooting tells me to restart my router. If I dont do anyhting after a few minutes it comes back alive and I have internet access again.

My laptop is an Acer Aspire 5739G Notebook and I got it on Friday 20th.

My basic spec:

  • System Manufacturer/Model Number: Acer Aspire 5739G Notebook 664G32MN (LX.PH602.129)
  • OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64
  • CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo T6600 (2.2GHz)
  • Memory: 4GB (2048 + 2048) RAM DDR3
  • Graphics Card: NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 240M 1GB DDR3
  • Monitor(s) Display: 15 inch Acer CineCrystal LED backlit TFT LCD
  • Hard Drive: 320GB 5400rpm Serial ATA Hard Drive

Some facts:

  • Other computers and devices connected to my router are fine.
  • When I plug the laptop into the ethernet cable, it's fine
  • When I use a USB wifi reciever it's fine (Belkin 54g wireless usb).
  • The issue is only when using the built in Intel Wireless WiFi Link 5100 AGN.
  • I have turned off IPv6 and homegroup as some people have suggested.
  • I have uninstalled the device and reinstalled using default Windows drivers.
  • I have downloaded and installed the latest drivers from Intel website and via Windows Update.
  • I have turned off any power saving relating to the WiFi device.
  • I have tried turning off WEP/WPA/encryption on the wireless to see if that worked... it didn't.
  • I tried changing the channel of the wireless broadcast from 6 to 1 and then 11. No difference.

Desperate for ideas here or I am going to have to take my laptop back!!!

probably got a fairly old form of wireless adapter in it for cheapness; whihc culd be incompatible with windows 7

or if it came with windows 7 I'd take a guess and say older router not comptaible with newer signal types of wirless adapter

If it was incompatible (nonsense) then it wouldn't connect at all.

As explained in the introductory post my wireless card is an Intel® Wireless WiFi Link 5100. It is compatable with Windows 7 and has the latest drivers. It is not an "old" card for "cheapness". http://www.intel.com/network/connectivity/products/wireless/adapters/5000/index.htm

Note that there are no issues using the USB reciever.

Please read my first post before posting any suggestions to save me from repeating myself.

Are you using version 12.4.1.11 drivers?

On Acers site (you can't direct link to your laptop) theres a few bios updates as well as a lot of new drivers for W7 64 home premium in the last few months.

There worth a try (make sure you upgrade the chipset drivers too).

I have tried downloading the drivers from the Acer site for my Wifi but have not tried installing the bios updates etc for anything else. I will try the bios and chipset updates later this afternoon.

depends how incompatible it is.

If its outright then yeah it wont connect, if its jsut buggy incomptaible it will connect but be buggy as he described.

As for the op don;t get snotty at me, you indicated you had a new laptop, but u didnt specify the wifi card it has, so there was no way I could of checked or known its age. Laptops often have ones tht r a good 4 or 5 yrs bkdated in them despite being brand new.

If all else fails I'd say its the router.

We had one of the older bt homehubs and my mums pc connected fine via an oldish usb adapter.

We upgraded to the newest one my mum's had almost identical issues to you, my brother (who like runs his own pc business) came and looked and it was basically the old usb dongle was not compatible with the newer hub and we basically had to swap the hub bk or change the dongle.

There's a ton of weird stuff to do with wifi signals and some stuff just is not compatible or works buggily

EDIT:

I forgot to point out on the OLD homehub my brother often had connection lose issues and I did on occasion, but with the new hub we are fine. And that was due to mild incomparability between our adapters and the router

I hope its not the router. I have Sky broadband and as part of their ToS and AUP you have to use the router provided by them.

It's not as simple as buying a new one and using that instead.

You can still get a router and plug it to the one you have with the company, or at least borrow a friend's one to check. I personnally did it when I went to my parent's place becaus the company they're with (Aliant/Bell telecom in NB Canada) is crappy and has a very weak wireless signal and is absolutely to be used to connect to the internet.

Redownloaded and installed driver for Intel WiFi 5100 AGN

Downloaded and installed chipset drivers

Flashed bios to latest version

Still nothing...

I doubt it's the router if it's working with an external USB adapter. The only other thing might be to reinstall Windows, but if it's already having problems it might be worth it just to exchange it or get a refund if you're within the allotted time. Judging by the amount of hits that showed up with a Google search (I would cite, but you've probably already read them all) it seems that it's not a problem worth tackling.

I'll vote for returning the laptop. Even if you can manage to get it working, a problem such as this shouldn't be happening (especially this soon!) and isn't worth your time to constantly fix.

So basically what you are saying is, that a b-g card can connect to N but will be buggy?

That's not how it works, the router will switch to the older one, like if a computer is g only and you have a wireless N router, the router will change to g automatically.

@Hobgoblinpie: I haven't been able to find anyone else with my problem using the same configuration. The only thing that is consistent in all cases is that everyone is running Windows 7. I dont think its a problem with Acer per se.

I meant upgrading to windows 7 :P I'm still buying the laptop, but the one I'm buying comes with Vista 32bit. And I have access to a 3 User (my dad bought it for our computers, but only one license has been used) Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit, but even if that is the case, I'd probably just buy a usb wireless adapter for it (I hate in built ones with a passion).

EDIT: Coincidences are weird. I just noticed that you also have a Belkin G wireless adapter o.O

Have you tried connecting to another router?

It is very possible that your specific card has problems with that specific router, I have run into that problem plenty of times. Bring your notebook to an internet cafe or coffee shop with free WiFi and see if it works.

You have covered just about every possible issue in your first post. Exchanging it sounds like the best option at this point.
