Particles

Your first glimpse of particles will be the snow coming out of the wardrobes that you will enter to get to Land of Snow for the Christmas update.

Oh my god, Narnia. lol

I can't believe, after years of pleading, we're extremely close to changing weather effects.

I don't want dandruff snow effects  I like the obviously fake snow-flakes near trollheim

I'd only want weather effects if it had another purpose than high cpu usage, such as elementals like dagannoth mother when the weather changes you need to use the opposite to water/ice = fire etc that'd be pretty neat I guess

Jagex would do really well if they talked to players about what role weather and time would do to the game. Should it be purely graphical, vary some aspects of the game (respawns of some creatures being slightly quicker during the night etc.) or vital to the game (some creatures only appear during certain weather conditions). It depends on how much impact the effects would have on CPU and RAM usage, since so much of RS's appeal lies in it's capability to run on virtually any computer with Java and a browser.

Oh, and particle effect for the win! It's been a long time coming, the screen overlay effect is so ancient it's gone beyond retro. It's just awful.

Yeah particle effects are hopefully going to be awesome! Real, virtual, snow (wait...)! Lol but seriously I can't wait until next week's Christmas event woo.

Oh for you guy's saying that it will suck even more cpu: Intel is rolling out new 32nm architecture CPU's in January (Core i3, i5, and i7). Cheaper, more efficient, and more powerful CPU's!

Cheaper and more powerful processors have always been released since the dawn of the computer age, but there will always be old computers that don't have a fancy processor or a recent graphics card. Unusually for a game, what we need to focus on is the oldest hardware that people still use regularly on a computer instead of new releases. That means considering computers that only use integrated graphics/ old graphics cards and ~2GHz processors for the lowest settings of the game.

The question is, should basic weather/particle effects be compulsory for everyone?

No, it wion't be compulsory, or at least it won't be if they don't go back on what they said. I remember the first time they mentioned it they said it would be something graphical that you could turn off, similar to fog and ground shading and all that. I know personally I won't run it.

Yeah now a days though you can pick up a decent computer for only a few hundred dollars that can run any game on the market. Newegg is your friend.

i can barely run rs2 as it is, especially at tet events and stuff it becomes unrunable, as i'm on a 2.93ghz celeron with an equally old integrated graphics card. they also said the effect would be scalable, which i assume means you can turn it completely off as well.

clearly you come from a family that has enough money for a new computer every 2 years or whatever ridiculous speed you want, if you'll give me a few hundred dollars, then sure i'll happily go on newegg and buy a new computer, unfortunately for a lot of people a few hundred dollars is unavailable for a new computer. that's not a viable solution "oh, this is harder to use now, you have to upgrade this or buy this new component so you can use this properly" that doesn't work every time, you'll end up with a customer base of people who can only afford better computer, and runescape tries to attract everyone, i realize there is a limit on how compatible they can be with old computer, and i'm assuming i am nearing that limit soon, within the next 6 months i probably won't be able to run rs2 on this computer anymore, except for maybe standing somewhere vacant and sitting in a clan chat, but that still doesn't mean that just because i need a new computer i can go out and buy one.

tl;dr buying new hardware every time there are upgrades that come out is a useless solution to most people.

I was just letting people know that if they are looking for new computer components, new ones are coming out in January. People were on the topic that the particle effects would add to Runescape being a CPU hog, so I was just bringing up a suggestion that if anyone was in the market anyway, they can get a good cheap computer at newegg, with new processors from Intel coming out next month.

I was not trying to be rude or anything, just helpful. No need to be so snappy. One more thing, please don't assume anything about my family, as we are tightening our belts just like millions of other people due to the recession.

~Merry Christmas :^_^:

Hmm, well if we're on the topic of graphics, I can run HD now that my Vista decided to eat itself after some error (no it wasn't a virus). Now on Windows 7*, I can run HD, even though my graphics card was untouched. On the old OS, HD wouldn't even open, but now it runs admirably with all the options on (though it takes a bit to load areas, and crashes a bit, so I'm still sticking with SD. But even though I can have all of the options on (though I don't like ground decorations)).

Wow just imagine. Snow everytime the Christmas event comes around. I've only seen snow once in real life, but I never seen it snowing! I'm excited for this event.

Trust me when I tell you this: you aren't missing much. Though I would suggest moving somewhere else, that's just because Southern California is the armpit of America.

But from up here in New York, snow sucks, the cold sucks, and we have to live with it.

Word, the snow we just got in New York over the weekend was killer, included with high winds and 25 degree weather :ohnoes:

Power hath descended forth from Thy hand,

So we shall flow a river forth to Thee,

I think we can conclude that if we want weather now, it's going to have to be the boring graphics only type and not affect the gameplay much. In two years, I think we might be able to do something much better with it as old hardware dies out.

EDIT: Or maybe we could have a simple icon for the current weather for the lowest graphics?
