How important are the different melee styles?

Featured Replies

It seems like almost every good melee weapon is slash. The only times I hear stab and crush are useful are corp and waterfiends respectively.

Are there any common slayer tasks or uses where leaf bladed sword or zammy spear would be more useful than whip?

For low levels, Dragon Mace/SS/Z Spear > Whip at Basilisks.

I piety the fool.

Metal dragons are better with stab weapons as are black dragons.

Gargolyes are meant to be weak versus crush.

LBS and Zamorak Spear (with Super Anti-Fires) are good against Steel and Mithril Dragons. They are also good against Iron Dragons, however if you have a good enough attack then a whip will do the job well there. Really the whip is the best weapon for Slayer because of its strength, accuracy and the ability to wield a shield for the extra strength/defence bonus.

Waterfiends of course, Gargolyes are also faster with crush than whip.

Pretty much every single monster in game will take slightly more damage if u use the correct style on them.

Of course there are subtleties to it, so once u get higher stats you can usually ignore these things.

Well if you look in the Tip.it Bestiary under the 'Notes' section on any monster it will tell you what attack type there weakest against.

Slash wouldn't be so common if the whip wasn't the best weapon hands down.

But not for every monster, only those that have a significant weakness.

Slash wouldn't be so common if the whip wasn't the best weapon hands down.

Actually a number of weapons are dominated by slash.

Godsword

Dragon Scimitar

Saradomin Sword

All of these are decent weapons and they are mainly slash based.

Which is why it is always nice to own a Zamorakian Spear when you are a serious slayer.

Other than the fact SS and GS have both slash and crush and often the crush option is used particularly in player killing since most melee armours are weakest to crush

In all my experience in minigames (Clan Wars, Castle Wars and Soul Wars), the slash option seems to be more preferred. I hardly see anyone use the crush option.

Against monsters in general, the zamorakian spear is better than both SS and a GS as it has both a stab and crush option, and a GS is just way too slow to be effective.

The whip is dominant enough that unless a monster is just really strong against slash, you aren't going to see people downgrading to a lesser weapon. It's like, lv22 skeletons have less defense against crush...but when you're hitting on them so often no matter what style you use, does it really matter?

It starts to come into play against monsters with very high defense, such as waterfiends, mithril dragons, aquanites, corporeal beast, that sort of thing.
