Depressing & Tragic Movies

Featured Replies

Dunno why but i've really gotten into these kind of things recently. Like movies about hopes and dreams being crushed...*shrugs*

Requiem For A Dream

Donnie Darko

That kinda thing. Anyone got any suggestions?

I still recommend Lilja-4-Ever, which is available everywhere, even on play.com. I'll put on some others tomorrow since I am kind of tired at the moment. :)

Oh yeah, had a look for that one but was like ̢̮â¬Å¡Ãâã20 on HMV, might get it from play soon :)

Requiem for a Dream had me feelin down as hell at the end, really good film though.

Kirk and Lars I could handle. At the same time.

i actually was really depressed by oldboy, i kept on thinking "somethings not right" and "this guy is screwed" and then when you get to the kicker of the movie, its like getting kicked in the balls. that was my take on it.

requiem for a dream was depressing, as was pi (by the same director). i just kept on thinking "this guy is f'ed up" and was actually relieved when he did what he did at the end (trying not to add any spoilers, but its hard not to).

i didnt find donnie darko all that bad, he did what he had to do at the end, and he could even get some chuckles in. dd is my favorite movie (if i had to pick one) so i always enjoy watching it. (anyone else think jena malone is really hot in this movie :P )

id actually like to see more depressing and tragic movies, keep em coming. going to check out Lilja-4-Ever at daan's suggestion, see if i can rent it or aquire it somehow.

Friday Night Lights - Probably one of the worst ever directed and acting sports movie ever. I should literally throw up on the person who made this movie, its complete dog crap and its a joke to football

Only time I've ever felt like depressed after watching a movie was after seeing Schindler's List. Pretty deep stuff.

Ladder 49 is the only depressing movie I can remember right now.

Yea, Indy, Jena Malone is really hawt. :) Hmm, she's only 2 years older than I am. :P

Paths of Glory is rather tough.

Shooting Dogs

After SalÃÆÃâÃâò you're kind of..what's the word..ah: flabergasted.

Magnolia is rather heavy.

Gouttes d'eau Sur Pierres BrÃÆÃâÃâûlantes <-- despite its funnyness, it's rather heavy matterial aswell.

La Fille sur le pont

L'Enfant

With exception of SaÃÆÃâÃâò and Paths of Glory everything is really new, so it shouldn't be too hard to find it. I'll bring up later when I think of more.

Definately Schindler's List.

Backdraft might qualify but I'm rather iffy on it.

And I don't know if A Beautiful Mind would count either. May do.

dont think thats really what we are looking for here, that should be in the worst movie ever thread.

i did think schindlers list was pretty depressing, but you see so much stuff like that about the jews and nazis in so many movies it kinda just doesnt seem to do anthing anymore.

never heard of ladder 49, ill check that out.

leave it to daan to give you 4 foreign movies with his list :P only one i saw was magnolia, not one of the foreign ones. good thing you gave the links on imdb, save me some time 8)

a beautiful mind was kind of depressing, i dont know if you consider the end as everything working out or not. its kinda wierd. have to check out backdraft.

well something made me really depresed last night then i saw ur name and it was from the show Futurama

it was the episode where they have Fry's old pizza parlour in display at the museum and they find it dog and its been fossilized so fry wants to clone him and it goes back in time showing how fry got frozen and how the dog was really sad cuz he loved fry and he waited and waited and he never came

it made me so god damn sad

im still sad thinking aboiut it

2 of them. Ladder 49 and the Green Mile

Platoon wasn't exactly a barrel of laughs, and the Deer Hunter was pretty rough as well.

"Da mihi castitatem et continentam, sed noli modo"

As others have mentioned, "Shindler's List" is definitaly there. Also "Life is Beautiful (La Vita e Bella)", "City of God", "The Mission" and "Million Dollar Baby". I agree with "Platoon" and think the soundtrack (well, Adagio for Strings) is what really marks that one for me.

the Green Mile

It's funny really because after watching it, I felt extremely rejuvinated and uplifted. I wept like a baby first time I watch, I admit that. It's incredibly sad but the ending just gave this slight explanation for the meaning of life, or perhaps just why we live and love.

I dunno, could just be me.

Nope, it's not just you. As incredibly sad as it was, i didn't feel too depressed at the end. In fact i went to bed with a new sense of uplifted self. It's hard to describe but it's almost like that film touched me on a deep spiritual level. Brilliant acting by Michael Clarke Duncan.

"Da mihi castitatem et continentam, sed noli modo"

Well this is gunna sound really lame but Armageddon is probably the saddest film Ive seen :? Ive seen about 1/3 of 'The Pianist' which was more shocking than depressing. I prefer up-lifting films than depressing ones

And no lol why do you always want to get stuff from John Lewis. Its over ̣̉300 more then than what i paid.

John Lewis is a great, great shop.

Among those already listed...

Schindler's List (Ending got to me)

Life is Beautiful (the ending was a shocker *cries*)

and Cast Away (I cried the first time during the Wilson-floating-away scene...)

Oh, I almost forgot: Gallipoli.

That was the football... right?

EDIT: Wilson was a volleyball! I forgot!
