Bios for computer

Hiya,

 

I have a small problem with my computer. My cursor is insanely big compared to the normal size. I have contacted the seller, and they told me to update my BIOS, but my problem is that the page I'm using doesn't have a version for my Windows 7 64-bit.

 

I want to ask if anyone might know a place where I can get this file?

 

The motherboard is made by Gigabyte, and the name is P55A-UD3. Version is 1.0.

Did you buy the computer with Windows 7 already on? Because if you did the shop you bought it from might fix it for you/replace it. If you installed it then you voided any warranty and this post I'm writing is useless.

It was already installed, and they did offer to fix it. But I think it seems like overkill for such a simple thing as a driver :/

The problem is absolutely not the BIOS and is probably not a driver. What cursor do you mean here? The mouse cursor or the text cursors?

It is the BIOS. The seller told me that they had these kind of problems before, and it it because the computer I bought accidently was sold with the wrong BIOS.

 

And it is every cursor, lol :D

Nah, it's more complicated then that.

 

It changes on its own will basically.. Sometimes it's normal size, sometimes i's gigantic.

The person you talked to obviously didn't know what he was talking about, and with that I would tell you to avoid at all costs that shop again, like I personally avoid at all cost my local computer shop as they not only purposely make so that computers break after a few months, but they also put illegal versions of Windows on the computers they sell.

 

I'm going to look that problem up a bit, I've had my cursor flash like that too, but hasn't happened to me since like 6 months. Actually was on Windows 7 Beta.

I like to support local stores as much as possible, fortunately they don't overcharge here so i don't pay more than max 10-20 over the internet price here (kinda equals out when you put shipping price from the internet store as well). Altho i know which to avoid too. One is called "Elektronik gruvan" which would translate "The electronics mine" lol.

Do you have an ATI graphics card? I had the exact same problem when I installed my ATI 5770. It's a well known issue. Want to know what the problem is? The BIOS. Gigabyte boards (I have the P55-UD3R) come with some software on the disc that can update your BIOS from within Windows. Use the disc you got with your motherboard/PC and install "@BIOS" I believe it's called.

 

If the people above don't believe me feel free to google "Huge cursor gigabyte ATI 5770" or whatever. You'll find a bunch of threads about it.

If they're doing things such as installing illegal copies of Windows, I would definitely report them. I've used my local store quite a lot over the years, mostly out of convenience. I've never had any problems with them at all, nor do they overcharge.

 

I still can't think how a cursor issue is related to the BIOS... I'll take a look around the Internet and get back to you if I find anything.

It would cost too much for me to report them, although I tell everyone not to go there. Anyway in the last years they've been getting a bad reputation and seem to be close to closing. Hell, even the computer shop located at 1hour away easily is competition to them with very good service and internet-like prices.

This is baffling me as well. The BIOS has no concept of a cursor, let alone it's appearance. The files which determine the size of the cursor is in the operating system, which is completely separate. Maybe a faulty driver is causing the problem?

 

EDIT: Vidi's probably nailed it, it makes sense.

I really don't think there's something fishy with the shop. It was recommended by one of my dad's technical experts..

My graphichs card is the ATI Radeon HD5870, so yeah, it is. Hmm never thought of that - I'll go try that immediately.

Someone told me further up that it's not a driver.. I don't know if I've already said this, but the cursor "flashes" from big to normal at very random times.. It seems like it becomes big when the system is "challenged" (multiple programs, games etc.) For example, as I'm typing atm, it's normal size.. (iTunes+Chrome)

If it's a 5-series ATi card and a Gigabyte motherboard, then yes it's the BIOS.

I downloaded that file (I think I've been on this page previously..), and apparently it's not compatible with my 64-bit version of Windows 7 (Edit: Neither is the F4 or F5 version).

Tried googling the info with 64-bit added to it, but I have no idea which of all the results has the right solution for me.

In there you can select to update BIOS from Gigabyte Server. You should then get a server select. Select the USA server then after that you should get a list of BIOS versions you can update to, select F6. That's how I did it, and how other people did it from what I read when I was googling the problem. Your computer will freeze and it might beep while updating the BIOS, and you'll have to reboot afterwords.

Same setup, with a 5770 as well. Problem happened to me as well, but I honestly don't remember what/if anything I did to fix it.

I get the message "Cann't get "bios.ini" file in selected @BIOS server" - same with the other servers (Taiwan 1+2, China, Japan).

 

Could the servers be offline?

Performance/cost wise, ATI is better. Proven many a times. If you're trying to bash ATI over this issue that they know about and are working on, then you clearly don't know about the error in the nVidia drivers a few weeks ago. It actually killed your graphics card. I dunno about you, but a massive cursor > £100-200+ graphics card dying.

Actually, to me all the cards are the same, but people on this forum are biased towards Ati saying it's way better.
