I'm quite disappointed. I didn't like Oracular Spectacular all that much (only Electric Feel, Time to Pretend, and Kids), but there's no songs I like on this album, at all.

Matt: You want that eh? You want everything good for you. You want everything that's--falls off garbage can

Camera guy: Whoa, haha, are you okay dude?

Matt: You want anything funny that happens, don't you?

Camera guy: still laughing

Matt: You want the funny shit that happens here and there, you think it comes out of your [bleep]ing [wagon] pushes garbage can down, don't you? You think it's funny? It comes out of here! running towards Camera guy

Camera guy: runs away still laughing

Matt: You think the funny comes out of your mother[bleep]ing creativity? Comes out of Satan, mother[bleep]er! nn--ngh! pushes Camera guy down

Camera guy: Hoooholy [bleep]!

Matt: FUNNY ISN'T REAL! FUNNY ISN'T REAL!

I agree with you. The album doesn't seem like it's going anywhere, all the songs sound same-ish. I wouldn't call the album bad, but it's nothing I would download. I think they should have stuck to the style they had on Oracular Spectacular.

I hate people who only like the hits that MGMT have put out. Those aren't even really their best work, only their catchiest. Of Moons, Birds, and Monsters is easily their best song and Oracular Spectacular was a pretty fine album through and through.

But anyways I lost patience with the new album when I listened to it. After 5 songs I didn't really feel like they were going anywhere with it. I don't think they knew where they were going with it. They wrote some good tunes, got famous, and don't know how to follow up such a tremendously popular album. Maybe I'll listen to it again, but i really don't have any interest to listen to that surf-style stuff again. Ick.

What's wrong with that, what I like about music is when it's catchy. I don't mind Of Moons, Birds, and Monsters as a structure, the whole thing is a little too reverb-y and hazy to suit me.

Does MGMT stand for anything? Or is that the band name?

It's their band name. I'm surprised you've never heard of them.

I'm not going to start an argument about how to appreciate music, but what I can say is that a band like MGMT is very abstract. And typically when a band is abstract, they are forced to produce something to get attention such as a hit single. Maybe I'm a dying breed, but I don't listen to singles. I don't buy into the whole iTunes/Limewire generation of downloading single songs. I only listen to full albums. When an artist makes an album, you should listen to the whole thing, not just the catchy songs. An album is a work of art and listening to singles is like looking at a single brush stroke from the Mona Lisa; you can't appreciate it without it being in the context of the entire work. That being said, you can still have a track or two that you prefer more than others. That's completely reasonable. But I don't think it's fair to just discard the rest of an album. Whether you like it or not, those songs are what the band you are listening to thinks sound good and they want you to listen to that as well.

And FYI: MGMT is a shortened version of their original name The Management.

Okay, I see what you mean. But just because that's what the band wants, it doesn't automatically make me like it...

A pretty great album. I love all the musical quotes that get thrown at you. I haven't had the chance to listen to it very carefully, but from what I've heard I could already tell that it's a pretty complex and layerd record that needs (and deserves!) multiple hearings before it opens up to the listener. I can already appreciate this one more than the previous, because it is so much more challenging.

Range, what kind of (dying) breed are you exactly? As far as I know people have always been listening to singles? I also think that you're making more of the album as a whole (a concept, even) than necessary (man, I hate that word). And if you care so much about this, well...this record should fit you like a glove? So it's strange that you discard it after hearing half of it for like one time or something.

I realize people have been listening to singles forever, I guess I just feel like a lot of the people my age that I know only listen to singles. In all honesty, I know I'm going to listen to it at least a few more times before I give up on it but my first impression was not good.

Listened to a bit of it today. I only had enough time to listen to half of it, but I quite liked what I heard. Not being a huge MGMT fan to begin with (having only heard Kids and Time To Pretend, basically), but I quite enjoyed its '60s-surf-rock-mixed-with-electro inspired sound. Really enjoyed it.

I really enjoyed it, I like the way they're developing their sound and not just stuffing it with more club ready electro-pop anthems, as good as those songs were this seems more interesting as an album as a whole.
