Those were all minor details (aside from the charging pikes wtfbbq) when held up against the fact that they charged down a sheer cliff face that was made out of shale. What you're saying is that's good; what military history has shown is that it is unbelievably stupid.

Hmmm, well I've always seen in many things that a charge down hill has always been really effective, I guess it depends on factors, but I imagine a grassy hill would be an alright hill for horses to charge down, and I'm not talking about a vast hill here, as that would be too dangerous, but a hill that is not to high up from the ground, like 10 metres, that gives a good charge point.

Anyway, when're your soldiers back from Wales? Another year? Cause if it's not done by the next decade, I fear that they would've prepared for it, and we'd just be wallking into a trap, I mean they've already had a large reinforcement from Mather and Egypt, it would be a risky attack right now.

Tactically speaking, the first time I only lost valueless troops that I didn't want.

The second time, I thought "invading" meant I went up to their castle, so I had my army set up for a street fight basically, and then it turns out that I meet a huge army in the middle of nowhere.

That generally only happens if you're facing a city state which basically has only enough troops to defend on place (the city), or you're surprise attacking. Most of the player countries seem to have earned reputations as aggressors (except Kiev, because exterminating natives is hip!), so other countries are likely to be more cautious.

I never knew that horse break their legs charging downhill. On the note of the battle of Bruges, Icu basically happened to line up all the modifiers in his favor, which I suppose was because of his choice of units.

@retech

I mix and match :D

Also they don't, I've been reading real life battles where they use it, and so far I've not found one.

I wonder how effective plague ridden corpses being flung over the walls in a siege and after a break has been made using catapults or a different style of siege weapon (what I am looking for is something that can fire at a lower angle than say a catapult or ballistae) to chuck balls of flaming pitch into the break (the flaming balls splattering and sending burning pitch everywhere)

It's biological warfare which Retech stated would cause people to dislike you, but it was effective for a long siege.

THAT'S WHAT STARTED THE [bleep]ING BLACK DEATH YOU MORON

A cavalry charge downhill won't break their legs unless the hill is really steep, which I was under the impression Icu was saying was a good way to go about business! It'll lose cohesion pretty fast though.

Darnit, we have someone who actually applies history to a game! Darnit! I was hoping to pop the Black Death on all of you, with all its social unrest and chaos. :P

I thought the black death was started by rats coming to England by stowing away in boats?

To be honest, a downhill cavalry charge would only be good if the hill had an incliation of like, less than 10, maybe 15 degrees. Anything more and you're taking an unecessary risk.

(Dusty I know that) Bah scrap the plague ridden corpses from the battle plans retech. Substitute them with the glorious flaming ball of pitch :P

EDIT: Ross the black death was spread by the mongol hordes throwing plague ridden bodies over city walls in sieges (well occasionally they used only the heads but I digress)

Well maybe that's how it spread to England, but the Black Plague was spread on merchant ships after the Mongols (or maybe the Huns) started catapulting corpses. Soon after fleas had latched onto rats bound for Europe, and the rest is history.

Judging by the time period involved (at least I think that is the case) it seems likely for the mongols to be the culprits.

EDIT: Ross the bubonic plague is also refered to as the black death or the black plague

I thought the black death and the bubonic plague were the same thing.

Oh man I'm not good at history.

The Black Death mostly caused bubonic plague, but sometimes the more deadly septicemic or pneumonic plague if I remember correctly.

Yeah, but the way I understood that was that they flung the bodies of people with the Black Plague or w/e over the walls to give other people the Black Plague... Dusty says the lobbing caused it.

It came from somewhere over in the Asian steppes but it was sparse and not really a problem, but the Mongols came and lobbed it over the walls when they were sieging Kaffa. Since Kaffa was a major trading hub on the Black Sea, the fugitives from the siege fled all across Europe and that's how it spread to such highly populated areas and became such a gigantic pandemic.

The black death never hit Iceland, they closed their ports.

Same with Madagascar.
