When I play any media file in Windows Media Player then close the player, the GUI does go away but the player still plays the file. I can close it by going to the task manager; however I would like to actually fix this. I am running Vista 64.

Man, this has plagued so many of my nightmares. I'd get some virus that would play some song. I'd exit out of the program, the song continues. Turn off the speakers, song continues! Disconnect everything and pull out the power, AND THE SONG CONTINUES!

Problem is, not everyone wants to change players, and WMP is quite a good player on it's appearance, and when you put a codec pack on it, it's also a good player. I have used vlc in the past, and I prefer by far wmp.

VLC isn't that good for music IMO. It can be quite confusing to use as well. I personally use it for films, but I use WMP for music.

This link suggests stopping the file first then closing the program; I have tried this and it stops the music, but WMP does not release the file.

VLC doesn't use a fancy UI, it doesn't list your music, playlists etc. And I disagree about WMP being bad for music. It has a easy to use UI, easy to make up playlists etc etc. It does what a music player should and it doesn't do anything stupid. Oh and I've been using WMP for about 5 years and I could count the amount of times it's crashed on me on one hand. That's pretty good if you ask me.

I said that I already agreed about it being not that great for music. I disagree with it not crashing: first off all, you can only run it on Windows, so it's doomed to crash, it's got built in DRM, it's had multiple serious exploits... I'm sure that I'll think of more later, as well.

 

Songbird, on the other hand, it free, cross-platform, in my opinion is better than WMP, although I'm sure it's at least as good, is open source, had huge numbers of extensions, and isn't targeted by hackers. It's stability on Linux is impressive, although I don't know about on Windows.

That is one frustrating program. I don't own any Apple products, but I have a friend who's computer died, and he wanted to use mine to load his stuff on it... it was a nightmare even when it wasn't in use, and when it was, it never seemed to actually work, no matter how many sophisticated functions it possessed.

Heh, I still use winamp for music. It kicks the llama's [wagon].

Songbird can never get my meta-data right, and it always messes up my album artwork. It may be good for Linux but I wouldn't recommend it for Windows or Mac OSX.

Ya I am supporting you that VLC is very good for watching movies and any video but for music I am only prefer window media player because I am abdicated to WMP because of it's simple design and very use through to WMP.

I always found WMP would mess up the artwork and metadata more than songbird would, especially given the new managed music option which found a lot of missing info from CDs which hadn't copied over properly (again, using WMP). I also like the fact that you can sync iPods and most other MP3 players easily with it without needing the iTunes bloatware.

It always seamlessly integrated lyrics, found the cover art automatically, and it's a great syncing tool: simple, but does exactly everything I want it to, unlike iTunes, which will try to steal my credit card and rape my hard-drive if I tried to actually use it.

I think your media player has to missing some file so check it out your missing file otherwise reinstall it, Might be problem was in it? You can do format your PC may be virus can effected? But I think you can just try to use some another good software. like VLC,Div X and some video software they cab also give very nice video facility. I have been just using VLC Media players around last two years It is a very nice softwer,

The problem seems to have resolved itself; it happened when windows sidebar gadget crashed and restarted or when I installed new drivers for my video card. VLC crashes for me, which is why I do not use it (although that may have been fixed now too).

Songbird is vile.

 

Winamp, foobar2000 or WMP if you don't download music in formats outside of MP3.

Songbird is fine, much better than Winamp bloat, even does iPod syncing.
