So Ubuntu 10.04 came out yesterday, I'm about to start the upgrade process. I've updated a laptop already, but needed my computer yesterday.

I didn't get the boot speed boost that was promised (10 seconds), but audio is much more stable- The realtime kernel is fixed and audio ran great on that laptop.

Get it here :-)

Just started upgrading myself, will be interesting to see if I notice any improvements. Cheers for the reminder! ;)

I'll have to team up with my dad, and see if we can't give this one a go on the Live CD/DVD ... Hopefully it will act far better than what I saw back with 8.04/8.10 ... :P

Been using it on my laptop since Alpha

Waiting a week or two before upgrading my desktop.

8.04 is actually the release that I have the best memories of, but it was the first one that I actually got... I had my uncle around who had been around since the UNIX dark ages to help me out though.

Restarting now, it took quite a bit to upgrade all those packages (I did gksudo update-manager -d instead of a clean install which I plan to do for 10.10).

All upgraded nice and fine here, haven't noticed any major improvements but I'm sure there are things underneath it all! :) Did take a while though...

Anyone here know about performance (and issues/errors) with RuneScape yet?

Haven't been able to try v10.04 LTS myself because the DVD writer here decided to die while no one was looking. Going to be a while before it can be replaced here. :(

Haven't tried it with RS, I had a pretty smooth experience with Karmic + RS though.
They must have fixed the OpenGL handling before you got to it. :) ... I was hearing horror stories, and ran into browser crashes with 8.04/8.10 ...

I haven't spent as much time in-game lately as I used to, but I haven't had any issues with Runescape on Lucid.

Good to know, thanks for the heads-up. |^_^| ... Just curious, were you in HD Mode?

You don't need a CD/DVD to install Ubuntu, just a flash disk. UNetbootin makes it almost too easy.
Also good to know. Never heard of this one before, so I've bookmarked the link in case all else fails.

I had issues with Karmic when playing RuneScape and tried all sorts - performance was fine in Safe Mode, but I wasn't able to launch into Standard Detail / High-Detail. I'm in the same boat with Lucid.

The solution that I found was using Firefox alongside Java within Wine which immediately allows me to launch into any mode alongside not having any negative impact on performance. It's not the most convenient of solutions, but after playing around quite a bit it's the one I found. ;)

That sounds interesting, I will have to try that as I've had the problem you detailed... That's what has been turning me off using Ubuntu, and now I may just come back :P

If I have to resort to that, I'm going to be very turned off from using ubuntu, as that will likely mean I'd be looking at a number of other semi-convoluted things to make other items work, including writing/using '.BAT' files for DosBox. (Already have to keep jumping back to windows to write one and save it in a format DosBox accepts, dangit.) <_<

Looks like WinXP might be the last OS I will ever use. My dad goes solid ubuntu like he's thinking of, I'll be offline for good. No point using a computer if usability isn't as good as security, especially when both Java (with RuneScape) and Flash (with XgenStudios "Stick Arena: Ballistick") are big things for me. :(

(p.s.: To everyone, your mileage may vary severely... Mine is always landmined because of my dad's total inability to at least accept the fact that I have an interest in something... Bugs me every time...)

For me RS works really oddly. I'm using Arch Linux myself.

Safe mode works without problems:

[spoiler=Safe mode]dc9fc4fd5aafeb13444a86ffe0f8f.png

HD works just fine too (4xAA causes some camera lag and particles don't work at all, but everything else works):

[spoiler=HD]63dcedb015e26c10c181bb5a43bec.png

However, SD doesn't work :?:

eb88488b034e1397b76b458528a92.png

Also fullscreen doesn't work with resolutions over 1024x768 and resizable doesn't fill the screen completely, but otherwise it's just fine. Oh and ping doesn't work in the world select screen, but that's not a real problem.

Some distros seem to work better than others, I managed to get it to work perfectly in Xubuntu.

Yeah, no issues with HD, even at high resolutions.

<*drops jaw and feels resolution envy...*>

Man, I wish I had double 1600x1200 monitors.

Such a high resolution to play RS seems more annoying to me :P

Meh... Quite the opposite, IMO. :geek:

Having the wider aspect ratio means that Nyosuht has a wider field of view. Therefore, they can see a much larger area around them, potentially all the way to the view limit edges if they have the camera at the proper angle. Compared even to me and my always running on a single monitor at 1280x800 when playing RuneScape sometimes, that's envy-causing.

Tried RS yesterday stretched across two 20" screens, worked fine (Albeit a bit slow at times- My computer is getting older :/).

Yeah HD mode. (Standard detail is fixed width anyway, I think).

AHA! Found it! |^_^|

D'oh! It ain't big enough! #-o

Looks like I'll have to find a bigger thumbdrive. I'll catch up one of these days... :(
