The concept of roles

Recommended Posts

Yesterday, while raiding floor 30 with a team of four players, the group leader, who will remain unnamed, repeatedly called me a "leech". Turns out that I had teamed with her yesterday, and she didn't like how I was picking up the remains after clearing a room and not avidly helping. Now, before I elaborate, it is worth noting that I am neither a pure, nor high level user. My highest stats are in the non-combat field, but most of them are above 50. That said, the only damage I can really dish out is with range, and that skill is only about 48. Anyways, while picking up arrows and food that no one else seemed to care for, the leader started borderline harassing me, continuously calling me a "leecher", "useless", and other derogatory terms.

Normally, this kind of talk wouldn't bug me, but when she doesn't stop, I did get a little irritated. I didn't ignore her while in the dungeon, but she did make the list later. But I digress. Since I'm quite aware of how little damage I can do against monsters that appear red to me, I decide to go get the group some Giant Flatfish and Short Finned Eels, some of the best food in f2p. Turns out, this only proves her point. "Who fishes in a DUNGEON?" While no one did ask for food, I felt that they might need it for the boss, and since fishing is one of my better skills, I thought I was helping out. After all, a good party needs fighters and resourcers, right? It's really frustrating when you try to genuinely help someone out, but get yelled at.

Your title's absolutely right, some people do have this misconception that the Dungeoneering is entirely about ploughing through a dungeon, hacking and slashing at anything in the way, doing the same for the boss and voila - done! ;) Although this may be an elaboration on some, the concept sticks.

The idea of roles within a party is very widely recognised, Dungeoneering's obviously new to RuneScape so it may take a while for people to understand that people playing different roles and utilising their most beneficial skills is going to be advantageous for the entire group, but I'm quite sure more people will gradually begin to understand that.

I sure know that having someone providing an extra amount of food, essentially playing the role of healer (thanks to the 'Use on' function!), is far more handy than the same person dealing minimal amounts of damage. ;)

Sigh... that leader definitely sucks. (Come to my F2P Dungeon clan? :P ) You only get the "leecher" title if you did absolutely nothing in the dungeon.

As pies pointed out, you can use food on others to heal them.

But then again, if you joined in the fight, the monsters can be killed faster. But if it's something like a level 110 warrior (yes, they do appear on F2P)... well, good luck.

Main reason why I never team with strangers is because they just rush to the end, and once they get there, they start insulting me for not helping. Um, yeah... I guess they are right. Better not make katagon equipment at all but go straight to the end without weapon. Oh yeah, ofc I can help you, althought you hoarded all of the food and weapons, leaving nothing for me. You know what, have fun killing that gluttonous behemoth alone.

I do not want to say she was right, but in my experience there is no benefit to fishing in the dungeon. The monsters drop significant amount of food to keep you healed and enough for the boss fight as well. In fact the best experience I got was when I was duoing and me and my partner just rushed the dungeon, picked all the food, and mined whatever rocks we came across. Now as much as I wish Jagex would fix this so the skill wasn't just all about combat, it is simply not that way at the moment. At this point in time though, you are better off rushing through the dungeon, not bothering with many of the resources contained in the dungeon.

Now these are just my opinions at my current level, maybe things will get more challenging at higher levels.

You mean that's not what happens with these duo-trio-quad-quint teams? I thought the point of teaming was to make a dungeon crawl faster and, by splitting up the skills, that would happen. The crafters, fletcher and smithers make the armor/weapons, fishers and cookers make the food (that's the biggest chunk of my time: growing and topping potatoes) and the rangers, mages and meleers fight with their appropriate skills.

Maybe I see this as natural to fall into roles from doing dungeon crawls in other games. Not doing it makes no sense to me.

He's right. Always dungeoneer with friends, and always make your best skiller the leader.

Otherwise, the dungeon ends while your still trying to take advantage of the opportunities, and your blamed for not helping.

Complain as you like about Jagex, but think about what they've done. How many MMORPG designers go around to creating as complex an in-game world as Jagex? They do need to get around to making a equipable knife, though.

With everyone's complaining about updates, it's amzing that there isn't a forum topic on the fact that the chat box says "You can't reach that" (as opposed to "I can't reach that!").

GASP! Vyleo, how DARE you play as intended? You should be exploiting the system like everyone else. And while we are at it, how dare you expect to have FUN? It's about levels man, levels, and meaningless rankings, and slightly more efficient weapons that will take 2 years of play to make up for the time you spent getting them rather than killing with your current ones for that time.

How does leveling fast equate to exploitation?

Because dungeoneering is a minigame skill & it's more fun to play the miningame than to charge through it like a grinder.

You should probably put an offer out here for dungeoneers who are interested in something besides the race to 99 (a.k.a. a roleplayer).

@OP - I'ma do my thing, you do yours. If I find that I don't like you or your style of play, I'll quit after we finish, and find someone else.

The leader may feel that you're being a leech, but if you're trying to help the best you can, you're not a leech.

Next time this happens, and the leader rips through you again and again on how you're a leech, patiently wait until they find a team door - you know, the levers, or follow the leader?

Then, waste as much time as you can, get your "add ignore" ready, and quit. They won't be able to complete the dungeon, and they'll know exactly how valuable you are. Or, they won't, but you'll know exactly how valuable you are.

One of my friends didn't like the style of play of 4 other people he was with. They got to the boss room, and he instructed them what to do, and how to do it. They didn't listen, and one by one they died. They were playing on a large map, and had cleared out every room.

One of the rooms, on the way to the boss, was the tile room. It required 76 runecrafting, and only my friend had that. He went there, forced a tile, and then logged out.

They probably spent an hour on that map, to get very little experience. Goes to show you shouldn't mess with other people in your group.

TL;DR -

1. Don't piss off members of your group

2. If you're trying to help, you're probably not a leech.

Sorry but that is just stupid, part of being in a team is that you need to work and try to manage everyone's ego. Just because you don't like someone does not mean you cannot suck it up and finish the dungeon you are in. If you dislike them that much, finish the dungeon, and then quit the team after that. Trying to intentionally ruin someone's playing experience just because you did not get your way is very childish.
