Try a few hundred thousand for sparse border patrolling. It would be more efficient to have larger armies that were ready to respond, rather than covering the entire border.

hmm.. i have an idea. dungeon, would it be okay if i set up some fortresses along your borders? anyways, i leave enough of the troops to border watching, while setting up outposts with runners, while the rest set up a camp to be called upon if needed. that work?

Retech, can we make an alternate history where the Aztecs and such develop long range warships and conduct an invasion of mainland Europe? This game is much better with a common foe. Like the Mongols, or the Scathe (you were awesome creating that race in MaDe, Ross), or the Mindflayers and Bloodsuckers in 2025.
