A Thought Experiment: Summoning 2 Familiars at Once

Recommended Posts

I'm sure this topic has been brought up before, but I thought given the present circumstances, it would make for an interesting discussion.

I came to thinking, "What would it be like if you could summon 2 familiars at once? What advantages would it offer?" Clearly, we can't have people running around with 2 steel titans or a steel titan and a yak, and likewise I'm not certain whether or not the servers can deal with the additional lag. Therefore, this thought experiment uses 2 assumptions:

1. You can summon as many familiars as you like, but the level requirements of all the familiars combined cannot exceed 1.5x your Summoning Level, nor can you have 2 of the same type of familiar out at once (types = healer, BoB, combat)

2. Jagex's servers are man enough to tank the extra lag, and there is also no significant difference in lag for each player's individual computer. We're sort of throwing realism into the wind here.

3. Something like this is probably prone to various major bugs. Let's assume Jagex gets this one down perfectly and everything runs as it's theoretically supposed to.

So why can't you hop off to Bandos with your Steel titan blazing and your Yak ready to go? Well, unless you're the guy with level 130 Summoning, you can't. (96+99)\1.5=130.

A few cases where such an ability could be useful are:

Runecrafting. Whether using the Abyss, Ghraaks, or ZMI, having a lurker along with a bunyip (for healing) or a Ghraak (for the tele) would make Runecrafting a little easier to train.

Fishing. BoB and a Granite Lobster.

Combat. Using a Steel Titan, you can use the Bull Ant as a BoB.

Summoning. The extra capacity of a BoB+Kyatt.

and I'm sure there are many other scenarios I've not thought of.

So the point of this thought experiment. Do you think such an ability to summon multiple familiars would have a largely positive or negative effect on Runescape? Summoning already has had a huge impact, but would a further addition to it help or harm the overall state of the economy, of training, and of the game as a whole? Discuss.

There is no specific need for this and neither is there a specific advantage to this, so no, i don't think this would be a good idea.

By the way, does 'thought experiment' amount to 'since i don't want this to be moved into the suggest ''graveyard of threads'' ions, i'm trying to ignore categorization' ? I mean, it works....

You're too smart for me ;)

It did come to me as a suggestion, but then I realized, as Bows said, Jagex would never do it. So there's that too.

The only reason they would never do it is because there is no significant need to. At least not currently.

I like it however what I think would be a more elegant and likely solution is giving us the ability to merge pouches into higher lvl hybrids.

Using same level strategy as your example the levels add up, so you can't hybrid anything tht wuld total over 99.

Not sure exactly how it would function graphically perhaps a universal hybrid amorphous blob type graphic or they hybrids flicker between the two forms (unless performing a form specific function);; that or the obvious limiter of having set combinations we can hybrid so jagex can make special graphics for them

Well there's not really a "need" for anything, there's only a desire to make the game more efficient, more expansive, and more fun.

How strange, I actually had exactly the same idea, except with 2x the summoning level rather than 1.5x (and more like hmm that would be interesting than a realistic idea). If it were viable, it could mean the lower levelled familiars may gain more usage. I also see nothing wrong with summoning two combat familiars yet.

You could even have combo familiars, for example, Granite Crab and Lobster for +5 Fishing overall.

Without having considered it much, I think it would have a positive effect, albeit a probably unnecessary one.

You should instead do a ''suggestion'' thread about slayer skill for free players. I'm sure there would be ALOT of discussion about whether or not releasing the most successful skill as a f2p version would be a good idea or not, and how it could be implemented(don't get me wrong, i hate free players getting new content, but that could give alot of people reason to get members).

Why do you hate free players getting new content? I'm not intending to start an argument; simply asking.

Simple. Because they don't pay for it.(this really is getting off topic, i'm sorry)

I was just thinking we were getting off topic, too. Anyway, makes sense. Was just wondering. Now, on with the discussion!

The max level to go with yak would be 52, the max level with steel titan 49, with unicorn, 60. So you could own nomad with kyatt + uni or geyser + terrorbird.

I think it'd be better to just make a few hybrid familiars instead. Maybe higher level abyssal familiars could heal you every time you craft a rune or something? Actually, fire/moss/ice titans are something like that, combat familiars that heal. I think say, t bird combined with bunyip, combined with some useful, non-direct combat ability would be a nice high level one. (Scroll boosts a certain stat, or like the lava titan it increases your damage...)

This is interesting. On one hand, you have people saying that it has no specific needs or uses, while on the other hand we have someone saying it is overpowered.

I've thought about this idea in a similar fashion, but i pondered upon 'fusing' of different familiar-types. Want some health and storage? Fuse a healer and BoB. The hybrid would have to have a reduced healing amount and less spaces than either of the two parents and would require increased summoning levels to keep it fair.

At first I was part of the "overpowered" group as well, but after reading the limitations of this suggestion, I'd say it would work.

I don't know how complicated this update would get though... it would also require TWO summoning tabs, which means a rework of the inventory tabs.

Exactly. 96 + 52 = 148 = 1.5*99 rounded down. 99 + 49 = 148 = 88+60.

I was referring to the highest level that your secondary familiar could have.
