Foreign movies!

Bloodstain

Recommended Posts

Over the past year I've discovered the greatness that is foreign movies, particularly South Korean movies! South Korean movies are brutal, comic, can switch genres in a movie excellently, and are great at asking "whats the worst possible thing that could happen" and then doing that. They're also great at leaving you feeling completely stinking drained at the end of the movie, The Chaser especially. They have no problem showing violence and murder brutally, realistically, unlike Hollywood. The plots can be pretty god damn great too. SO WITH OUT FURTHER ADIEU, GREAT MOVIES!

Also, that annoying movie cliche of police losing the suspect because they hit him or whatever is absent. Instead, police freely beat suspects whenever the feel like it!

Also 2, Korean actors are really stinking great

1. Memories of Murder.

-This is based on the first serial killer case in South Korea. One of the best crime dramas I've ever seen, and it shows an incompetent police force trying to solve a murder.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NtOutxGJK5o

"

The Plot: 1980s South Korea, reeling from painful democratization, encounters its first serial killer.

Why You'll Love It: My vote for best movie of the 2000s. Impossibly beautiful cinematography; a plot that manages to full of surprises without being labyrinthine, funny without being glib, touching without being melodramatic; some of the best music ever written for a film; and jaw-dropping acting. I've watching this movie about twenty times in like five years and each time I'm blown away like it's the first."

2. The Chaser

A former detective turned pimp tries to find where his missing girls are after discovering a serial killer has been preying on them. This one drained me, after watching it I was just like "stink, everything sucks". Definitely one of the best thrillers and I can't do it any justice.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=snKlzAxNu4Y

3. A Bittersweet Life

A Korean gangster film, bad ass gets betrayed by his boss, goes on the warpath. I laughed when I heard about the concept of a Korean gangster movie, but this was awesome.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=URLtMbZLeVk

4. I Saw the Devil

This movie. This. stinking. Movie.

A serial killer murders the wife of a secret service agent. Big stinking mistake. Secret service agent vows to make him suffer 10 thousand times worse than his wife did, so he shows up, beats the living crap out of the killer but leaves him barely alive. Then, he puts a tracking device in the guy and leaves/lets him go. Then the agent tracks the serial killer and shows up seemingly randomly to beat the dude within an inch of his life, each time getting more and more brutal. Movie has no problem showing someone getting smashed repeatedly in the head with a hammer, with blood squirting out.

5. Taegukgi aka Brotherhood of War

Basically, the Korean version of Saving Private Ryan. Except with lots of great hand to hand trench combat. Two brothers are recruited into the Korean war, the older brother finds out that he can send his brother home if he earns enough medals. So he volunteers for every suicidal mission that comes up so that he can get medals.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nnx2CjhHADM

6. Old Boy

DO I EVEN NEED TO stinkING TELL YOU WHAT THIS ONE IS?! SERIOUSLY?! It's probably the best revenge movie ever. If you haven't seen it DO. Basically a drunken, worthless father/husband wakes up from a stupor in a room. This room has no windows, the door is locked, and there is a bed, tv, and bathroom. Someone gives him food everyday. He is finally released, AFTER 15 YEARS in the room, and he tries to figure out who/why did it. Probably also has the most evil mother stinker too. Also, really stinking brutal.

OK, end of the serious/brutal/crime/"god i hate humanity" movies, onto the more lighthearted movies.

7. The Good, The Bad, The Weird.

Just watch the trailer, it is wacky fun.

8. Castaway on the Moon

Ah, this one is great. It's a very good comedy AND drama and thought provoking. Here's a good synopsis

I swear Koreans have the best kind of humor. Their comedies are absolutely hilarious and Castaway on the Moon is no exception. It basically revolves around a man that tries to commit suicide by jumping off a bridge but his attempt is unsuccessful and it lands him on a small island on the Han river. The hilarious part about this is that it's a small island within the cities limits and just a few hundred yards away from civilization. After a few unsuccessful attempts at trying to leave the island, he basically gives up and lives off of the land. While doing so, a reclusive woman living in a nearby tower spies on him and she believes he's an alien.

The movie has some homeages to Tom Hanks' Cast Away (another Wilson type character) with many hilarious scenes. I was also on the verge of tears at some parts as this movie is part drama as well

9. Save the Green Planet!

I watched this movie like 3 weeks ago and I still don't know what the stink to make of it. Definitely good, and probably one of the weirdest movies I've watched

The genres and emotions of that movie jump all over the place from scene to scene, it was a crazy experiment that was pulled off successfully. I enjoyed myself the full two hours, it was fresh and exciting all the way through.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3NLbDgyMusk

One minute you're watching a sci fi, the next a comedy, the next a detective movie, etc and you never even notice.

Some Japanese movies:

1. Survive Style 5+ (featuring Vinnie Jones!)

Kind of like Pulp Fiction in that it's got the intertwined stories aspect, and jumps between them. It's got beautiful visuals and a really touching story, especially the end

"

The Plot: Five linked stories unfold. A man repeatedly kills and buries his wife, but she continually returns, waiting from him at home, ready to payback the favor. A middle class family is forever changed when the father's permanently hypnotized to believe he's a bird. Three driveless burglars discover hidden, taboo feelings. A spiteful advertising executive, with a string of inane commerical ideas, hires a killer to handle what she thinks the problem is. Finally, a British hitman and his translator/death-documentarian move through the other stories, demanding to know what the others' functions in life are, only to (largely) be dissatisfied with the answers.

Why You'll Love It: Survive Style 5+ tracks five different stories of characters learning about acceptance. Each group has their comfortable, prosperous lives shaken by sudden inescapable changes. This makes them re-mules what's important in life. The uplifting story is told with alternating light-hearted comedy and introspective character moments, which are not necessarily unfunny. Gen Sekiguchi gained his filmic training through extensive success in Japanese commercials, where he learned a lot about color, set dressing, and how to robustly load a frame with things for your eyes to take in. He couples this with extensive set and costume design to fill his debut feature film with lots of flash and visual panache to keep your eyes occupied. Every time the film returns to Tadanobu Asano's character and him dealing with his returning wife, there's a multitude of gorgeous set pieces and over-the-top action. It's fun to watch with a lot of people, and you'll likely get something new out of each subsequent viewing. All-in-all it's a very endearing, idiosyncratic, and sometimes surreal approach to learning how to deal. It also ends with probably one of the best-placed covers of a 70's disco hit ever.

2. Sonatine

Beat Takeshi!

Japanese gangster film, a bunch of serious gangsters have to go hide out a the beach and act like children having fun in the sun. It basically explores how the men have to act all serious and cold in their culture, but then when they get to a beach where they're alone they're free to have fun and crap.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y7chFW_Fhb0

3. Battle Royal

Pretty sure everyone's heard of this. A class of school girls gets put on an island, the last one alive wins and gets to live. They brutally kill each other.

4. Kung fu Hustle!

Amazingly fun kung fu comedy.

Brazil

City of God

Brutal reality of living in infamous Brazil's drug laden favelas.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yJdW1TevoyA

Elite Squad

-focuses on Brazil's famed BOPE, the special unit for waging war on drug dealers in the favella. Focuses a lot on corruption and has some good action. highly recommend. Most think of it as the spiritual successor to City of God

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cb-rUfBTQ1g

Elite Squad 2

Focuses more on the higher up, political corruption.

Italy

Gamorrah

An inside look at Italy's modern-day crime families.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IHpf_Xv5hYk

Dellamorte Dellamore

Excellent Italian movie about a caretaker of a graveyard. This particular graveyard is unique in that the dead come to life at night every so often, and he kills them like it's no big deal. Definitely get a HUGE Army of Darkness vibe from it. I'd link a trailer, but none of them do it ANY justice whatsoever.

Also it was filmed in both ENGLISH and ITALIAN

I always forget to mention the other two Vengeances -.- I thought Lady Vengeance was really good, especially how they did the ending. I've never got around to watching Mr. Vengeance, I started once but it seemed a little...slow?

Watching The Host right now too

I need to see Man Bites Dog too, you just reminded me of that. And JSA, and The Thirst, and City of Violence, and Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter, and Spring. Damn, gunna be a fun couple weeks!

Here's a couple I've enjoyed:

El ángel exterminador (The Exterminating Angel)

IMDb

Cet obscur objet du désir (That Obscure Object of Desire)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9xyedMel424

IMDb

Both of these are by Luis Bunuel, a true master of surrealism and legend of cinema.

I beat you to The Exterminating Angel!

Mister Vengeance wasnt that good. The first hour is really slow and boring.

It picks up a lot after that, but still, the other two are better.

Mr Vengeance is worth finishing though.

Oh yeah. Also, Spoorloos is good. I really enjoyed it.

RUSSIAN CINEMA TIME!!! WOO

Some of the greatest movies ever made, by my favorite director, Andrei Tarkovsky.

Andrei Rublev

a film about a 16th? century Russian Icon painter. Not really accurate, since not much was written about him. Film is one of my least favorites of his, but still good in it's own right.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CbguowlkZ4g

Ivan's Childhood.

About a child who is put into WW2 and has to scout out for the Russians, as they can't/don't want to, and he is willing, about the tragic tale of a childhood lost.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DG1in3yqGaQ

Solyaris.

About a man Kris Kelvin, goes up to this space center orbiting around the strange and mysterious planet known as Solyaris (Hence the title), While there the planet creates his dead wife that he's still been morning over.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=seCRhjrLNy4

Stalker

My personal favorite film. About a group going to this mysterious Zone, to find themselves, and to learn what's there, questioning the Zone and why and how it's there, if it's there, and other philosophical views.

NO LINK I'M LAZY

more:

The Ascent

Dersu Uzala (by Akira Kurosawa, filmed in Russian and in Russia)

Mirror

Come and See (the greatest WW2 movie)

Cranes are flying

Mother and Son.

The Second Circle.

The Irony of Fate, or Enjoy Your Bath!

Moscow does not believe in tears.

If you do things right people won't be sure you've done anything at all.

For German language movies, I really like The Edukators and Baerfuss. They're pretty epic, the Educators is about some guys who go around threatening rich people [i can't properly summarize storylines], and Baerfuss is about a girl with a psychological problem and a guy who falls in love with her. Both are awesome.

Also, I forgot, did you mention the Host?

So I watched it last night. It was good, I loved how they focused on the whole "scientists think there is a virus even though there is no evidence for one so you must have a virus" thing, and I laughed at the part where they mentioned people with the apparent virus were showing cold symptoms. Meanwhile everyone is standing in the rain at night  The two Americans were pretty funny/incompetent too

They just had to punch you in the stomach right when you thought it would be a happy ending though, definitely wasn't expecting what happened to the little girl after all that.

The grandpa''s death was hilarious too. And hobo to the rescue!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FCsBMwK40hw

Thinking of watching JSA or The City of Violence tonight. On one hand I love Byung-hun Lee and Kang-[garden tool] Song, on the other City of Violence looks...violent!

I've always loved foreign films. Especially Akira Kurosawa movies, Seven Samurai, Yojimbo, Sanjuro and others.

City of Lost Children was a total mind [bleep]

Red Cliff was epic.

My Life As A Dog, is a good classic Swedish comedy, couldn't find a trailer for it. It's on netflix though.

I love the Dynasty Warriors series, but a lot of Red Cliff bored the hell out of me. The fights were good though, especially the tortoise maneuver, beautiful. The second one had lots of good battles too

Hayao Miyazaki's movies are incredible, from Princess Mononoke to My Neighbor Totoro.

Early Jackie Chan movies are where it's at too. Funny and full of incredible fight scenes.

Favorite foreign movie right now is probably Un Prophete. It's basically the Godfather in a modern setting. Extremely well-acted and well-written, and much tenser than I thought it would be.

You can't mention Russian movies without Battleship Potemkin

Yeah, but it's only memorable for the Montage scene now anyway, everything else is just alright.

I would argue that it's much more than 'just alright', but it's pretty pointless to argue subjective opinions.

I kept on planning to post but figured if I waited long enough then most of the ones I would have mentioned would be mentioned. And they were. A few not mentioned:

German:

Lola Rennt

Metropolis

M

Goodbye Lenin

Nosferatu, eine Symphonic des Grauens

Das Leben der Anderen

Der Untergang

French:

Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain

Nikita

Alphaville, une étrange aventure de Lemmy Caution

Monsieur Hulot series

Naissance des pieuvres

Banlieue 13 series

Irreversible

Le Salaire de la peur

Delicatessen

Italian:

La Vita e bella

Nuovo cinema paradiso

C'era una volta il West

Cannibal Holocaust

Ladri di biciclette

Salò o le 120 giornate di Sodoma

Japanese:

Kataude mashin gâru

Hotaru no haka

Akira

Swedish:

F****ng Åmål

Låt den rätte komma in

Fanny och Alexander

Det Sjunde in seglet

Korean:

Janghwa, Hongryeon

Saibogujiman kwenchana

Bakjwi

Bin-jip

Thailand:

Chocolate

Israel:

Vals Im Bashir

Hong Kong:

Lat sau san taam

Ying xiong

I might have accidentally wrote one someone already mentioned. There's also a few I would recommend that people have just mentioned the director/writer and maybe one or two of their movies (like Miyazaki or Kurosawa) but I'll skip those. Every one of these movies I mentioned is worth watching once, but many you won't want to watch again.
