Actually... What about an electrical purge? I could do that without harming the infected, and at fairly high voltage. Fire resistance may be high, but I could probably screw up the bacterium enough to stop it.

10:53 PM - retech9691: I feel the need
10:53 PM - retech9691: To include many chasms in my story arc
10:53 PM - Resistance: You mean plotholes?

Again, not cost effective. :)

Bacterium is prevalant throughout the atmosphere. It might be useful just to purge the Sarlane, but might not be safe for the ship's systems.

We already have mines, but we need workers to build more mines + factories. They can proceed to churn out hardware for war, like ships or really fun and shiny guns.

No, no that isn't what I'm saying. Why do we need mines in the first place?.. SI said last game that the kT can be any material that can be built into stuff.

[wagon], we Don't need mines. We can make something else to produce kT at a much more effective and stable rate.

Oh yeah, let's start picking up dirt and putting it in our factories.

Or better yet, let's start HARVESTING PEOPLE and putting their remains in our MEAT GRINDERS. I can't imagine a single family that could ask for a MORE HONOURABLE BURIAL.

Seriously Earth, there are two ways of getting metal essentially: mining and recycling. Seeing as we don't exactly have huge amounts of scrap metal lying around from our non-existant industrial revolution, we don't have much of a choice.

Approximately how long does it take for the disease to run its course?

There are two timelines:

-Open Cut:

Initial symptoms show in less than a minute, and conversion is around 20 minutes per limb, death usually occuring at around 30 minutes.

-Lungs:

Initial symptoms show after about three days, the first symptom is Sudden Onset Death.

Trial and Error on Astare 3 have shown that antibiotics can keep the infection in check...however the antibiotic stockpile isn't exactly massive and is being hoarded by gangs (Huzzah).

Autopsy has shown the infection itself spreads through the lung very slowly before going though the lung wall, causing asphixia (Lung can't expand/draw in air due to pressure difference, resulting in suffocation).

Other theories are that it spreads to the heart and floods the lungs with blood (as well as killing the heart).

(Not a trained medical pracitioner, snide comments about ineptitude will be frowned upon...sufficing to say death in 3 days)

Aren't domes supposed to be sealed from the outside enviroment?

Three things:

First, the ground?

Second, as stated in one of our chats, you didn't 'need' a life support system, since you could just vent 7/8ths of the air inside the dome and replenish...since the air is "breathable".

Third, shield generators operate outside the domes, as does the outside of the dome...Ergo if microbes hit the dome, and where then encompassed by the shield...

It would seem that Astare 4, which is more similar to Earth, would have a greater amount of deadly bacteria that could infect humans, while Astare 3, which is more like Venus, would not have bacteria that could survive in Earth-like conditions.

Astare 3:

Mean Temp: 589K/316C

Atmosphere: 8.38 atm (N2 44%,O2 29%,H2O 8%,CO2 4%)

Venus

Mean Temp: 735 K/460 C

Atomsphere: 93 atm (CO2 96%, N2 4%)

Earth

Mean Temp: 287K/14C

Atomsphere: 1 atm (N2 78%, O2 21%, Ar 1%)

So...Comparison to Venus

High temperature, yes.

Insane pressure, no.

Low Oxygen, no

High CO2, no

Comparison to Earth

Low Temperature, no

Normal Pressure, Yes-ish (Its about equal to 125 meters underwater, which is tolerable)

Moderate Oxygen, yes

Low CO2, yes

Water Content, yes

So, overall, save from the higher temperature, Astare 3 is Earthlike.

And, as we know, temperatures change over time, meaning that, quite possibly, at some point, Astare 3 was cooler, thus meaning that life could have developed, thus meaning that life could have evolved to tolerate, even thrive at higher temperatures.

(Though a candel burns at 1,000 degrees so I assume an energy weapon has a few thousand on that =p)

Well I knew you wouldn't agree. I know how you hate facing facts.

But most bacteria are killed by insanely high temperatures, such as 300 C. That's why we cook our food, except for the yum factor. :P

It would probaly mean they would be killed by low temperatures or put into dormancy?

Astare 3 must be purged. 100% fatality rate on a bacteria which can survive well above boiling point.

Either a cure/countertoxin must be developed, or we must glass the planet and purify the remains of the colonists with fire.

We can state that there was an atmospheric explosion and that the loss of those 50,000 people was a tragic misunderstanding.

Alternately you could just quarentine the planet and leave me behind to continue nefarious purposes.

There seems to be actually more going on with the planet than the disease, so I SHALL INVESTIGATE.

Personal suspicion: formerly a bioweapons laboratory

Retech, no. Not the meatgrinders. Now, shut up. SI, would a biological life form, or farms sorta-ish for kT work?

When you admit to wanting to use it for neferious purposes, it kind of sets off warning lights. Also, putting it under quarantine would prevent regular inspections from taking place...

Anything you would like to tell us about your planned projects?

I thought I already told you?

Legions of robot workers, vast stretches of factories, a few shipyards here or there? Dozens of ion cannon arrays to protect against raiders?

Compared to research, it's pretty nefarious! Probably overshadowed by all those masochists on television nowadays, but still! Evil laugh appropriate! Mwahahahahahahahahaha

I know this sounds like a terrible idea (minusing all of the accounts of murder) but why not just destroy the infected?

It has none of the heartwarming benefits of saving the people and none of the material benefits of recycling them. It might end up as a last resort option though.

Sure, you would need to build the farms, and then recyclers to turn the Food into Materials. (Building a rifle out of beets just doesn't cut it =P)

How much is a recycler? How much can it convert, and what percentage of food does it turn into materials?
