In addition to what Jaffy1 said, gaining 19m xp in a month takes away too much time to be able to help admin a forum properly, at least in my personal opinion. Heck, I've been thinking of joining staff here and there, and I only make +20k xp/month at the outside normally. On the flipside, I've helped moderate/admin at least 3 or 4 other forums I've been at in the past, and I've always done a proper job each time. I'm seriously not trying to boast here or anything, but I am just trying to assist in making the point that RuneScape Skill Exp. gains do not auto-equivocate into better admin capabilities.

That is easily one of the stupidest things I have ever read in my life. I'm sorry, but simply playing a game at an efficient rate, and gaining xp quickly, in no way means you don't have enough time to admin a forum "properly". So essentially, you're saying that if you gain too much xp in a month, you obviously aren't dedicating enough time to your forum. That's ridiculous.

I managed to rack in a nice chunk of exp & be a pretty active Admin at the same time. One doesn't necessarily exclude the other.

Honestly I think that a nice balance between playing and administrating the forum is the best option, as I agree that playing RS increases the understanding of the users and the community that the staff is guiding. I encourage staff members to at least log in game once in a while, if nothing else to join a few TET events.

Edit: I am not saying that staff members who don't play can't moderate the forums, but that it helps to be in touch with the game that is the base of the forum's community.

You're accusing me of bigotry, how ironic. It's a nice attempt at argument, but your responses are facile and asinine, if not diatribe. Who's arrogant now?

If they clearly aren't doing their admin work, then they wouldn't have their rank.

Just because you don't see what they do it doesn't mean they aren't doing anything.

I remember in my old clan, many of the Councils were seen as doing nothing, but in reality we did the majority of the work that sustained the clan.

Just my two cents anyway.

@ Bows -- I think Laikrob covered the other half of what I might have had to say to you quite well. Heck, I signed it in my hand-signature of my previous post, now that I recall! Put simply, my point earlier was that a person's RS Exp. gains don't always correlate to what their true ability to admin/mod a forum will be. Like Laikrob said, "one doesn't necessarily exclude the other"...

BTW, did you miss the "at least in my personal opinion" part of what I said? Did you really try to treat my thoughts like I was stating more than just my opinions? If so, bad idea, dude... <_<

I am pointing out that the way you are looking at things is wrong. I fail to see how pointing something out like that is a "bad idea."

I fail to see where you put the "don't always" part in this:

What you tried to point out as being wrong, is something that you actually mis-read, and that's why it happened to be such an awful idea. Heck, if that's simply not clear enough, I'll be flat-ignoring any further posts from you to this specific thread via "Common Sense". It's something that comes with age, and isn't actually built into these forums, but allows thread-specific ignores without having to set more permanent settings. Really handy for me, ha ha... :shades:

EDIT: As for this...

Put simply, my point earlier was that a person's RS Exp. gains don't always correlate to what their true ability to admin/mod a forum will be.

I fail to see where you put the "don't always" part <<<snip>>>

Again, you have to read through the whole post. Especially whole paragraphs, because if you don't, then you end up firing a bad return post at just a single segment. It isn't a matter of being a problem to disagree with an opinion, it's actually a matter of disagreeing with a single part without taking the rest into account. <_<

In that case, you contradicted yourself by saying that gaining too much exp means you can't moderate effectively and then by saying that it doesn't matter how much exp you gain in relativity to moderation.

Only because they've passed my "trouble vs. anger" quotient. Also, if you notice from my updated post back there, that signature only contains half of my thoughts. Right now, I'm too tired to care about retouching it, plus the reply to you happened to be an afterthought. :|

That all depends on the tilt at which you, them, and/or anyone takes my posts. Again, the "whole paragraph" thing applies, as I'll note that I was dropping in a little personal opinion while making the point. ;)

I guess being blunt and having an opinion makes me inflammatory. Sucks. I'll leave this thread alone now, sorry Jimmy. Enjoy your new-found rank.

I was pointing out that even if your "whole paragraph" meaning was that exp gained doesn't equate to good moderation, you still contradicted yourself by saying something else in one of your first sentences.

And from the horse's mouth. (Neeeeigh) Yes, I play. Yes, I play quite a lot. I am lucky enough to have a job where a lot of the time I can have RS on in the "background", so I do a fair bit of semi-afk'able stuff there. (Mainly killing stuff). No, I don't post a lot in public. I never have, probably never will. I read a lot without posting. I'm just one of those people who lurk more than post (also reflected in my postcount). Should I post more? Probably. Is it detrimental to my job here as an admin? Not as I see it. As for playing "efficiently". Heh, you haven't seen my playstylle then :-D

Wait, this isn't about Jimmy? WHAT"S GOING ON IN HERE!?!

rosssigfinal.jpg

I wanna play.

Being an administrator can be time intensive thats no doubt, but I was able to play a decent amount myself as well. People cry admins are out of touch and don't play, then cry they play too much. Seems like a no win situation - either they don't play and are out of touch or get comments like

In addition to what Jaffy1 said, gaining 19m xp in a month takes away too much time to be able to help admin a forum properly, at least in my personal opinion.

how many massive scale forum's has everyone run run?

I only make +20k xp/month at the outside normally
Tears of Guthix+Penguins = 30k xp or more a week with less than oh 15 or 20 minutes effort.

Lakrob, gained more xp than me in any given month, and was a better admin in those months as well - It's a bit unfair to judge admin's effectiveness with no knowledge of the behind the scenes work that is done by the admin team. I mean, if Laikrob, N Odie or myself were throwing stones about too much rs playtime and lack of work - Maybe the point would be a bit more....meaningful.

I too, am not saying playing can make a difference between a good or bad mod or admin, but game knowledge, can't hurt.

We factor in QUITE A LOT of criteria in promotional choices for mods and admins - Don't think during my time the XP gains ever come up as a serious detractor from a promotion. We've got much more important criteria to look at.

"Any people anywhere, being inclined and having the power, have the right to rise up, and shake off the existing government, and form a new one that suits them better. This is a most valuable - a most sacred right - a right, which we hope and believe, is to liberate the world."

Abraham Lincoln

People cry admins are out of touch and don't play, then cry they play too much.

Notice that the TEFers making one of those statements don't make the other statement.

Good for TEFers, but seriously, can we stop runing Jimmy_Jim's promotion topic? It's actually rediculously ill mannered in my mind. Take up issues with staff elsewhere, not in a promotion topic. Same goes for all snidy comments from some members which has no bearing on the topic at hand. Simple.
