Uhmmmm.

The base damage that a spell goes off includes your magic level, so you have to include it when calculating max hits.

The in-game tooltip is just worded badly :P

The problem with that is that the multipliers would be way off. If you don't include magic level, you get the exact 1, 1.25, 1.88 and 4 multipliers for Impact, Wrack, Dragon Breath and Omnipower for Surge spells (and SoA).

I'm getting crits of 861 with Chain, which is almost 100% of the spell damage (867). Are you sure about the data?

Will have to go test this myself I guess, but in slayer tasks I've done the numbers seemed to have matched up nicely. Maybe just because they were surges though.

What equipment/spell etc. are you using? It's always possible it's a flaw of the dummies or something.

So if the multiplier is added to the damage, then that makes the formula prayer*(level+mult*damage). I guess void/slayer helm/other multipliers are added after prayer, but I haven't tested it.

Yeah, shame multipliers are so messed up.

You can get the following generic multipliers:

x1 for top tier spells (surge, SoA)

x1.07 for waves

x1.25 for blasts

x1.65 for bolts

x2.62 for strikes

And the multiplier for wild magic seems to be 2.19x not 2.5x.

It's possible blitz spells benefit from this compared to barrage. Not sure (if you feel like testing :P).

765 740 768 709 556 325
765 739 768 709 555 325
766 739 767 709 555 326
670 648 672 621 486 285
766 740 768 710 556 326

867 838 819 665 435 223
768 739 720 566 336 124

This is the used base damage for each spell (e.g. recorded crit divided by multiplier, the displayed damage, and the displayed damage minus 99. Displayed damage minus 99 matches more closely for the highest tier spells, for lower tier spells there's another multiplier. Wild Magic is still way off but that's normal.

That would fit with surge tier spells, as expected. And the 2.19x for wild magic still holds.

Had a Steels task so took the chance to test Water Surge again.

Note that this included a Slayer Helm, which as it turns out is probably influencing ability damage.

Crits:

1620 asphyxiate

1075 wrack

1354 wrack (stun)

861 chain

1887 wild magic

Crits with Metamorphosis:

2025 dragon breath

2025 asphyxiate

1075 chain

1692 wrack (stun)

1075 impact

Metamorphosis combined with abilities seemed to increase the crit by 25%, but strangely with asphyxiate I somehow managed to hit 2300+ without a crit, while a 2025 was highlighted as a crit.

And yeah, Wild Magic appears to be the 219% ability, kooky.

Some other random slay task crits:

royal xbow + bolts

2902 snipe

1342 rapid fire

1786 piercing

So I did some calculations and while doing so my computer killed itself twice. Take it on trust that it seems most likely that the formula is simply spell damage * ability multiplier * fsh multiplier with fsh giving about 12% boost. If you add multipliers (e.g. spell damage * (ability + fsh)) then you get different fsh modifiers for each ability which would be kinda weird, and putting magic level in there puts fsh modifiers below 1.

I've done some testing, here is what I found. All of the ranges of values are with 99% surety

For range and melee prayers work by max hit= (equipment damage +level)*prayer I tested this with a bronze dagger, punching, and a chargebow (sling's new name).

We know this because if the formula were to be equipment damage + (level)*prayer then the boost would be in the region of 34-41% which is obviously wrong.

The boost on range is 24.9-28.2%

The boost on melee is 23.1-27.4%

To me it is apparent that the boost is 25%

Magic is a bit different. I have tested things mainly with a 99 magic account but also with a 68 magic account. I have not tested anything while wielding a staff yet.

Max with air strike at 99 is 291-292.5

Max with fire strike at 99 is 424-428 I am pretty sure this is a bug and is hitting higher than it should be

Max with air surge at 99 is 867-880

Max with fire surge at 99 is 865-882 This shows that surges have the same max hit.

Max with air strike at 68 magic is 254-260

The damage in the equipment interface is d+level.

For air strike d is 48.

The best fit for the data is (4*d + level) which gives a max of 291 at 99 and 260 at 68

There is a contradiction here though. With each spell having different d values their max hits would be different.

Back to prayer

Air strike with torment active has a max hit of 335-343

Let S= (4*d + level)

The formula cannot be 4d + level*prayer because this would leave torment's boost between 42.9-52.8% which is simply wrong.

If the formula is S*prayer then torment's boost is between 14.5-18.0%

If the formula is (4d*prayer) + level the boost is between 22.0-27.2%

With turmoil and anguish being 25% this indicates the formula is (4d*prayer) + level

New post because I saw you were reading the page after I posted last and you might miss information if I edited my last post.

As with the last post, all ranges are with 99% surety.

Void increased max hit of punching from 99 to 108-112.6 which is an increase of 9.1-13.7%

Void increased max hit of bronze dagger from 147 to 160-162.9 which is an increase of 8.8-10.8% to level+equipment, or a boost of 13.1-16.1% to level only

Combining these we can still say with 99% surety that the boost is 9.1-10.8% so its pretty obvious it is 10%

Increasing 99 by 10% and rounding down is a max of 108. Increasing 147 by 10% and rounding down is a max of 161.

Slayer helm boosted punching max hit by 16.1-19.8%

It looks like they kept it at 7/6.

If rounding down the hit, a 7/6 bonus increases max hit of 99 to 115 which was the highest I hit in 151 attacks.

Just to be clear: you did not test abilities at all, right?

"There is a contradiction here though. With each spell having different d values their max hits would be different."

Magic damage is capped at level 80 spells so all spells beyond that (and SoA) all have the same max. The rest scales, so fire strike hitting much higher is not a glitch.

D values for some spells are:

786 all barrage/blitz

768 all surge

739 SoA

720 fire wave

672 earth wave

624 water wave

595 air wave

576 divine storm

566 fire blast

336 fire bolt

124 fire strike

48 air strike

E.g. tiers are screwed up.

Gwyn's ability crits suggest a 12% boost for fsh, autoattacks are different once again it seems.

Yes it's 672 :P. I don't know about god spells atm, it's possible they scale differently I suppose but I think they are just a slightly cheaper alternative to fire blast now (and worse than wind wave/surge).

Yes I did not use any abilities. How do you test max hits with abilities? It must be tedious if the cooldown is longer than 1 attack interval.

I was thinking we could use equilibrium to test for max hit more easily since the number of outcomes is lower, we could also use the min hit with equilibrium to calculate the max hit, but there is the problem of rounding errors.

Here are the "D" values for the low level spells, damage-level:

Strike

Air 48

Water 48

Earth 86

Fire 124

Bolt

Air 162

Water 220

Earth 278

Fire 336

Blast

Air 393

Water 451

Earth 508

Fire 566

Wave

Air 595

Water 624

Earth 672

Fire 820

That's nothing :P

You can test max hits with abilities by just ability spamming until you get a critical hit, which will be a max for that ability. I just cycle through abilities that are off cooldown, it's not too hard to know which one you're using on which.

Wrack (stun) crit: 1560 (up 15.2% from 1354)

Wild Magic crit: 2093 (up 10.9% from 1887)

EDIT: Just realised it's a flat +206 increase, which is about 23.9% of 861 (Chain/Impact crit with Slayer Helm).

I just can't with this game...

Against other players, Wild Magic does hit twice, for 25 - 250% spell damage. But for whatever reason, it only hits once, for 25 - 219% spell damage on monsters.

Slayer helm is a 12,5% boost for abilities, by the way. Why do they keep giving things like the Slayer helm, prayers and potions, these odd numbers? Just give them a 15% boost or something. Keep it simple.

In real life MMO you don't get 99 smithing by making endless bronze daggers.

Postscript:

Do any of you have the estimated max hit increase that overloads give? Is it a percentage boost for abilities or a flat number?

Overloads increase max hit by the amount they boosted your level. The increase would change if you used turmoil, void, salve amulet ect.

Those max hits will be useful for figuring out the damage boost of killing ice strykes with fire spells- I'm assuming that is still around. Can you confirm if you were using a fire cape and not just unlocking the ability to kill them from kuradel?
