A few days ago I was perusing the RSOF forums and my eye caught the sight of a post made by a disgruntled veteran Runescape player who was also an owner of the holiday scythe. Their post was about a recently leaked item called the "golden scythe" that is rumored to be released soon. This player was concerned that the original owners of a holiday scythe would be undercut by the release of another scythe-like item. Speculations have been raised that this item may be a reward for both Deathcon II's second event on October 29th and Jagex's assumed Golden Joystick Awards win.

Ok Now for my two cents:

I feel that should this be another scythe-like item that is wieldable I really have no problem with that and will explain my reasoning a little more in depth later on in this paragraph. Firstly let me state I've been playing Runescape since February of 2002 and have obtained every holiday item since then except the holiday scythe. Now it might seem a bit odd for someone who has been playing for so long and who has obtained every single holiday item to not have obtained the scythe. The reason why I haven't obtained the scythe was due to a recent change at that time on Jagex's viewpoint on active players and their retrieval of the (new) untradable, account bound items, the time constraints to get on and obtain these items. Players who wanted to obtain the scythe from that Halloween event had to be on Runescape during that weekend (two day span) and wait for a timer to tick off the next randomized spawn of holiday items drops all across the globe. Once the timer ticked down players would get a message stating "happy holidays" or something to that effect and there would be scythes droped at random spots. At that time of the year Jagex had been receiving large amounts of complaints that players who had not obtained the scythe that weekend were away with obligations to attend real life events such as family dinners, outings, school, etc.

So now the issue I see consistently raised when it comes to the scythe is should Jagex re-release this item again because of the unfair time constraints held to players during the Halloween of 2003? Many players want it this way, but knowing how Jagex works they wouldn't want to take away from their players in such a manner and I could see them releasing a golden scythe that would allow players to have an actual scythe, but not the one dropped from the Halloween event of 2003.

They already did another release due to complaints of players, I believe it was the week after or something. There was no timer for the drops although they happened at a specific time (every 2 hours I believe) so was easy to predict.

Re releasing them would be silly but a new item would be fine as long as it's not too similar (squirrel ears for an example to bunny ears)

That is why I think they are making a golden scythe instead of what you see as a wooden scythe with a iron blade.

Truth be told I was never aware they performed another drop for that Halloween.

There were similar hurt feelings and arguments about the Rubber Chicken when they released the Easter Carrot in '09. I feel it is, as Macbeth said, sound and fury signifying nothing. People are going to argue about it for a few weeks and then it will be forgotten.

The Golden Scythe will be very obviously different from the Halloween Scythe, so I really don't see the issue. I wasn't even around in 2003 so I'm hoping it is their G.J. appreciation item so I can get one. Here's hoping they decide to release a new version of the Bunny Ears next. :P

im in the same bout as u. been playing since 02 and during the time when we were allowed to switch our items over i didnt. so i lost my two favorite items bunny ears and sycth.
i really wouldnt mind being able to get some kind of version of the sytch back although everyone having one would kinda cheapen the feeling.

Joined Runescape a few weeks after the scythe was dropped (and rubber chicken, but that is a trivial matter) and it still slightly annoys me to this day. What is interesting to me is Kaida's theory that the golden scythe is actually a Golden Joystick appreciation item. If they were to lose the GJ after a two winnings in a row, would they scrap the scythe, and possibly the sock mask if it's related, or release it anyway?

As for veterans feeling betrayed about the new scythe stealing the value of their own scythe, this wouldn't be the first time they undermined that part of the community. In fact, I wonder if they're going to keep doing things that, to the veterans, feel like its undermining because they're essentially a minority compared to the new generations that help Jagex profit.

The release of the royal crown and its comparison to the party hats is another good example. I remember seeing all the irritated comments about how all you needed to do was get 91 hunter to get a party hat now... I lol'ed at those people.

I wonder what they have in mind for the Christmas event...

Although, I guess we'll have to wait till the end of this month if golden scythe is GJ related. This should be interesting.

I have both a scythe and bunny ears, and I don't really care either way - as long as the resemblance isn't too blatantly obvious. But knowing Jagex isn't exactly known for their considerate attitude towards "veterans", I wouldn't get my hopes up.

I don't buy the whole "re-releasing the scythe for the people who didn't receive one back then" argument, though. If you were online and got one, yay, if you weren't, nay. Whatever the reason, tough luck. I haven't got every single holiday reward myself due to those "unfair time constraints", that's just the way it is, you don't see me complaining about it (and I would really have liked those ghostly robes - they'd fit my scythe perfectly). Re-releasing them every once in a while would go against the very point of those holiday rewards and be the umpteenth sign that this game really has jumped the shark.

And yes, the scythe drop was held twice indeed...

I have holiday scythe. I do not care if another scythe gets released as long as it's not identical looking and also if they improve scythe animations/hold poses in general. I don't even if the new one has a good emote to go with it.

My reaper costume is pretty much complete and a golden scythe would not make it any better.

I think that scythes are a general weapon type and that more players have been "undercut" (not sure if that was intended to be a pun in the original post -.-) by scythes' exclusion as such simply because it was released in RSC as a poorly thought out holiday exclusive item.
It's like if people didn't want more rapiers to be released because of the single unique one that came out with Cabin Fever, or if a big fuss had been made about Gnome Scarves because of the scarves released for Christmas (maybe there was a fuss, I don't remember).
These items aren't particularly "unique" in the sense that they don't actually closely represent anything, while I would argue that items like Bunny Ears, Skeleton Costumes, and Snow Globes should be preserved because they're far more holiday-specific.

At the same time, however, because JaGEx DID make that poor decision so long ago, any new scythes should be visually distinct from the originals. I didn't see the leak but if JaGEx just recolored the original scythe gold and released it I'd have a problem.

This thread wasn't created for a whine-fest so I would like if you appreciated it as something more as I have. Also, please do not degrade the purpose of this thread. I didn't bring up this topic to complain or whine because I accept the fact that I wont be seeing a scythe myself. I am aware that there is a lot more to this game than just that one halloween item and have been taking measures to enjoy them. This is also the one reason Why you don't see me making much of a complain on any other shortcomings of Jagex because the amount of content pushed into this game is so vast that people shouldn't get hinged on one little aspect.

My intentions were not to express a desire to give people another chance to obtain the actual thing that was released back in 2003 per-se, but to have a chance at receiving the iconic "death" item so many players wanted to complete their holiday outfits. This thread is to discuss the potential release of an item fitting for the holidays, would cover for the GJ win and subliminally cover for re-release of such an iconic halloween item.

Wait till they release it before making a wall of text about it. It might just be a gold trimming for people that have the holiday scythe, and the sock mask a consolation prize for those that don't.
But the item better not be given at that 29 Oct event, not everyone has their Saturdays free >.>

That might be a possibility.

... And this thread is speculation and not a discussion of something concrete. Don't give me that "wall of text" crap. You might as well have told me to shut up about it.

I'm afraid you may have misunderstood me - in retrospect I should have worded my reply more carefully. I was neither trying to whine nor accusing you of doing so (there would be no point in that other than trying to stir things up, which certainly isn't my intention), which is why I didn't quote you.

I was merely voicing the opinion (not directed towards anyone in specific) that holiday items should be viewed as unique opportunities, and that they shouldn't be inflated beyond their point or purpose. They're just there for fun, after all. Yet I see people (again not directed towards anyone in particular, but people in general) complaining all the time about having missed this or that certain holiday drop and how Jagex should re-release them, more often than not just because this accomodates their whim. Is that really in the spirit of the holidays they are intended to liven up? My reply (which is only an opinion, after all) was made in that light.

As I said, as long as the item is unique, I don't have a problem with it at all. It's not like a scythe (as a typology of items) is out of bounds just because they were dropped the better part of a decade ago, I fully agree with you on that one. Personally, I certainly wouldn't mind another scythe drop, just as long as there is an obvious difference between the two. There's no reason for an elitist attitude (on my part). I would like to maintain, however, that there should be better reasons for having a scythe as a holiday drop rather than referring to the 2003 scythe drop and how "people missed them because of time constraints or because they didn't play" - which is the most frequent reason given. That doesn't really fir in to the spirit of a holiday event, I think.

Here's something I'm wondering - why is it so bad if they re-release an old holiday item? Yes, it sucks for the older players who now don't get to feel special because they own an item some players will never get and it represents how long they've been a part of RS.

On the other hand - you start RS. You see these cool items such as the scythe, bunny ears, rubber chicken, etc. And you know you cannot, will not ever own one of these items.

No matter how you play it, it sucks for one group or another. I've often wondered if it would be a good idea for Jagex to cycle through holiday items. If they have 10 unique items for each holiday, just run them through a 10-year cycle. If you play the game for 10 damn years, you deserve access to every item. (Ignoring speculation about the longevity of RS given the current situation.)

Some people argue that stuff like the golden scythe, squirrel ears, easter carrot was released for all the whiners who wanted the scythe, bunny ears and rubber chicken respectively. I'd like to point out that not re-releasing the scythe, bunny ears and rubber chicken is just catering to whiners who want to feel special and have a sense of entitlement.

Anyways, I'm not saying they should do it, I'm saying that (to me) the reasons for not re-releasing the items seem about as good as the reasons FOR releasing the items.

As for similar items, why not? The Royal Crown is in no way, shape or form a party hat. The easter carrot is not the rubber chicken. The squirrel ears are not bunny ears. The golden scythe is not the scythe.
