Viability of dbane @ steels

Aten

Recommended Posts

My ranged level is fairly crappy and I'll max strength from dg anyways so instead of xp-wasting while I slay... would it be advisable to range-slay steels and irons? Irons in kura, steels @ fort

Ranged:

94 ranged, fsh, amulet of ranging, accumulator, ccb, unholy, arma, glaiven, merc gloves, archer (i)

vs

Melee:

99 atk, 98 strength, cr, ovls, turm, bandos, fsh, zerk (i), fury, dboots, bgloves, ddef, fc

Am I losing a considerable amount of speed if I switch to ranged? I don't particularly value xp past 99 right now so the reason I'm trying this is obviously not to overkill my strength (which is bound to happen anyways, but I just want to minimize it).

Oh, on another note, is it worth upgrading to steadfast boots right now?

Another question regarding ice wyrms:

What's the best shield slot item for wyrms? Is CSB actually better than arcane? How would you rank csb, arcane, and fsks on task?

Dragonbane bolts max a little under the rapier and are of course slower, so you'll lose ~20% of your dps for starters. With chinning+cannoning at over 500k xp/hr even without steel titan, you can determine whether the time lost slaying is worth the ranged xp gained.

Alright, I'll play with them for a task (just because I haven't even gotten the chance to try out rigour ever since I bought it) but yeah 20% is way too much. I had hoped it'd be less than 10%, which I would have been okay with given that I may not be rich enough to chincannon to 99 .

Steadfast are basically a pair of 45m+ dragon boots with an attack bonus, so no need to upgrade just yet.

As for dragonbane bolts, I am fairly certain they only work on the colored dragons unless I am wrong.

Hope it helps. I don't own a fire cape, so I cannot help you with your ice wyrm question.

They work on metals as well; the other day, I saw a guy at kura steels slaying beside me and he was killing them almost as quickly as me so I asked how he was getting such dps with broads. He then replied that they were dragonbanes.

a magic longbow (s) with the arrows is better than a chaotic x-bow with the bolts on irons and probably for steels too (while you don't have the fero anymore, the canon's accuracy is increased).

82 versus 22 ranged strength and only 1 tick extra attack speed. So that's 146 vs 86 including the 64 base strengths, almost 70% higher max (unless dragonbane arrows have higher extra damage than bolts). The one tick is good for 25% higher dps, so it's 1.7 vs 1.25 dps... I don't see how fero could help with that.

The one tick is good for 25% higher dps, so it's 1.7 vs 1.25 dps... I don't see how fero could help with that.

Ferocious ring gives a flat damage boost on each hit, so it's more effective on faster weapons--e.g. if you normally hit half the damage at twice the speed, ferocious ring means instead of x + x vs. 2x, you'd be looking at (x + 40) + (x + 40) vs. 2x + 40.

Naturally... but for 1.7 vs 1.25 units of dps, you're talking either a hit of, say, 720 vs 1.25 hits of 440.

Math stuff:

With 1.7x the strength, you get 1.7x the max, so if we assume 400 max for arrows pre-fero you get 400 vs 680, +40. 440*1.25 < 720.

lol when I quickly did the calcs i forgot to add the 40 to the average hit of the bolts.. if you don't do that, then the dps is really close without fero, and fero swings it more clearly in mlb(s)'s favor.

yeah but i felt dumb when i wrote that. the ring hardy changes how the weapons compare...

arrows/bolts get the same damage multiplier (1.5), and also, supposedly, +2 to range level but that doesn't really matter.

the x-bow does have about a 70% higher max. but with ferocious rings the average hits turn out to be only about 50% apart. The mlb (s)'s extra speed/accuracy won't make up for that. But the msb's will (66% faster than x-bow). but its less accurate. Maybe better than an r c-bow, in any case.

I can believe that msb beats ccbow with fero, but not without I'd think. We really need the next tier shortbow :/.

Edit: the max hit comparison still goes, you just have to add 80, so it'd become 760 vs 480, multiplied by speed that's 152 vs 120 vs 160 raw dps (crossbow vs smlb vs msb). If ccbow is 60% accurate, msb needs 57% accuracy to be equally good. The ranged attack bonus difference is 59 with an unholy book or 84 with void deflector w/ acp vs regular void.

How good is Abyssalbane with fero and magic short compared to melee?

I'm guessing metals have too much defence for a shortbow to be good there.

that might be worth testing.

We don't really know how the damage boost from bane ammo works yet.

It's roughly a 1.7x boost to damage, slightly more I believe.

Like 1.72x or something.

Which is a weird number. Maybe something else is going on.

Jagex added invisible strength equipment bonuses with goliath gloves.

It's not impossible that it might be the same thing going on with bane ammo.

In which case it might favor arrows more.

quick glance at vids on dragonbane arrows would seem to indicate this isnt the case though.

I recall Happy did some testing with abyssalbane bolts right after ROTM was released, but I haven't heard about his observations yet. It'd be nice to hear his input on this. In any case, this would definitely be a project I'd like to help in since abyssals are actually quite fun to kill IMO but obviously the efficiency part of me forces me to skip them.

on abyssal demons with a msb the arrows are around 220-230 k/h. With melee I think it's something like 275. On metals the difference would presumably be even larger.

Just tried dbane at ghorrock steels. The dps difference feels like more than 20%.
