ShieldAge
Hey everyone! I have a few questions regarding magic as I am planning to start training it as my core combat skill until 99. Here goes, 1. I am wondering what is the best way to get magic up to 99 quickly and cost effective? My magic level is 43 at the moment.2. What best gear should I get when I am training my magic? I haven't played Runescape for like 3 years and I am a F2P player last time too. However, with the improvement made to Runescape and all, me and my friends decided to sub for member tomorrow for the first time. So when answering these questions, keep in mind that I am a member. Lord Paul
Welcome to the forums! If you are interested in non-combat magic, superheat is a good idea since it trains two skills at once. Once you hit 55, you can alch while skilling - you can also superheat while mining - which is a passive way to train mage. And once you level up some more, plank-make and livid farm are also other good options. (They require the lunar spellbook, so you need to do some quests first.) As for combat, you should aim for a Polypore Staff at 80 magic. Death and blood runes are very high atm, and this spell is amazing for such a cheap price. If you have a large amount of money to blow, you could look into Storm of Armadyl or Ice Barrage. Both of these require pretty difficult quests to access, especially Storm. Working on max and completionist capes. 2435/2475
Jonanananas
If you're looking for a cost effective way to train magic, combat isn't going to be it, so gear should be relatively irrelevant(Apart from hati paws, get these if you don't have them already). As for which methods to use, there are several options. What I would recommend is mining+superheating until 55(You're also training mining and smithing, which is quite nice). Once you hit 55, use high-alchemy with items that have a low loss or may even yield a profit. Elemental battlestaves are always quite good for that. If you're looking for more items you can use this: http://www.tip.it/runescape/?page=high_alch_calc.htm . It will calculate your loss/win based on current ge prices. Be careful though that if the price is above 10k, then it's only exact to the nearest 100. After you've leveled a bit more, Lunar Magicks offer great options to train. If you're looking to unlock all spells, you'll have to do livid farm, which will cost a few mills in runes if all spells are unlocked. If that doesn't matter for you, I can recommend plank make(lvl 80) which quite often yields a profit when done with mahogany logs.
Dusk Souls
I third super heat Item, I went from level 43 to 59 in a few days (Hati paws helped) and got a nice profit of about 500K by making cannonballs from the steel bars I super-heating. Quyneax
Fast xp would require Ancient Magicks or Lunar Magics ideally, or Ritual of the Mahjarrat. They unlock more spells and spellbooks so look into that if you want to get something useful out of 99 magic (since it's a useless skill unless you get some of these quests). Combat magic tends to be a bit slower and more expensive than the skilling variety (until you unlock bursts and Storm of Armadyl) but you can mage things with drops to bring down the cost and also train summoning, for example. In general there are a few things to get: a magic damage boosting staff (chaotic staff or staff of light), a magic damage boosting amulet (from dungeoneering, arcane stream necklace), magic attack bonus (mystic for now, Ahrim's later on, mage's book, god cloak/Ardougne cloak, a mitre if praying, barrows gloves) and magic level boosts (magic potions, extreme magic potions, overloads, wolpertinger, Vecna's skull). Basically, you need money. At your level, I believe Crumble Undead offers the highest damage output at a reasonable cost, but it must be cast on undead of course. It's rather slow xp though. Instead of combat I'd suggest superheating up to 70 magic. At that point you can cast ice burst (with Desert Treasure done) which will be some of the fastest xp/hr right up to 99 magic. You can superheat mithril, adamant or runite with the appropriate smithing levels (coal bag helps a lot too), I think they profit at times, but check the GE.With the Family Crest quest done, you get a pair of gauntlets which double the smithing xp gained from smelting gold, you can use those with superheat for some great smithing xp (costs a bit). You can burst rock lobsters under Waterbirth Island for fast charms or skeletons in the Marim Dungeon (requires Monkey Madness) for pure xp. Either way get Hati paws, they will double your combat xp gain (attack, defence, strength, ranged, magic) for roughly 900k xp (level 73-74). ShieldAge
Gosh guys! Thanks for all the fantastic input! Let me sum up if I want to train magic cost effective and fast, NON-COMBAT1. Superheat until lvl 55.2. Use high alch on items. If possible use it on cheap items that can yield a profit out of it. Do this from lvl 55-80.3. Plank-make and livid farm. COMBAT1. Upon reaching lvl 70, use Ice Burst to train to 99. There are still a couple of things that you guys mention which I don't understand, 1. What is plank-make and livid farm?2. What are Lunar Magicks? From my understanding is this a spellbook? There are only two type of spellbooks which are lunar and ancient?3. Can I obtain both Lunar and Ancient spellbooks? Or am I only allow for one? Although I will probably not train my magic in combat way, I will still appreciate if someone can input me on a good set of equipments for my combat magic (43ish-70ish) since I will prefer to use magic to combat when I am questing or adventuring with my friend. Once again, thanks for the input! Just a few more to go and I am set.
Lord Paul
For starters, there are 3 spellbooks: your normal one, lunar, and ancient. You can obtain the last two thru quests, but you can only be on one spellbook at a time, meaning you can't have access to high alch and ice burst for example. Plank-make is a lunar spell that transforms logs into planks for construction.. Pretty fast xp and it sometimes can turn a profitLivid farm is an area where you train magic and farm simultaneously (with a little craft and cons xp). The rewards are unlockable lunar spells, and some are pretty useful. However, most people hate it since it is unbelievably boring and grindy. As for what armor to wear, infinity at 50 I suppose. Working on max and completionist capes. 2435/2475
Quyneax
NON-COMBAT1. Superheat until lvl 70.2. String amulet from 80 to 86 or 99.3. Plank make from 86 to 99. COMBAT1. Upon reaching lvl 70, use Ice Burst to train to 80, 86 or 99. Or am I only allow for one?I corrected your plan a bit :P. 1. Plank make is a spell in the Lunar Spellbook, requiring level 86 magic. It turns runes, money and a log into a plank. If you use mahogany logs and sell the mahogany planks you'll get cheap xp.2. It's a spellbook, unlocked by finishing the Lunar Diplomacy quest (Dream Mentor for some spells). There are three spellbooks, the default, Lunar and Ancient.3. You can have access to all three spellbooks, but only one can be active at the time. You can only cast spells from your active book. Praying at certain altars will change your spellbook. Cheefoo
Also, don't forget to find some Hati paws! Hati is a wolf boss that appears every year for a limited time, and defeating her can get you some gloves that double combat skill experience gain for a limited time! That's definitely something worth looking into. Don't worry if your combat levels aren't very high, if you find a team you'll do just fine. To get the gloves, all you have to do is hit Hati at least once, and once she dies, you have an 80% chance of getting the gloves. The double xp is massively useful for training, especially for magic because it works with non-combat spells too! Weather you're super-heating of alching, you'll get xp much faster with these. But be warned, Hati won't be around long; but I'm not exactly sure when the event is over. ShieldAge
Appreciate all the input guys! Will be following the modified plan by Quyneax closely. I am still having trouble finding a purchasable or obtainable mage set/weapon for myself when I am going to do some combat with magic. I will have to research on this more. x.x
Cheefoo
Appreciate all the input guys! Will be following the modified plan by Quyneax closely. I am still having trouble finding a purchasable or obtainable mage set/weapon for myself when I am going to do some combat with magic. I will have to research on this more. x.x Get mystic robes: they're cheap (about 200k a set) and effective. It's also worth your while to head to the Mage Arena in the wilderness to get a god cape, but I believe you need 60 magic for that. As for a weapon, stick with the elemental staff that saves you the most money, and consider switching over to an ancient staff once you have the requirements (50 magic I think). Ancient staves, among other magic weapons, now have a magic damage bonus; an invaluable boost for an aspiring magician. For a shield, try doing the "Horror from the Deep" quest. You can choose a prayer book that functions as a shield. They start off with no stats except +5 prayer, which in itself is nice, but once you add all the pages, they gain some nifty bonuses. I recommend getting the Guthix book of Balance. The stats are the most well rounded, and I believe it's the cheapest to complete with pages. Once you get higher stats, get yourself a set of Ahrim's robes (70 magic 70 defence) and a staff of light (75 magic 75 attack). They're some of the best magical equips and they're quite affordable! Other miscellaneous items to consider are: Arcane Stream Necklace (very powerful damage boost, get at 70 dungeoneering), Infinity Boots (50 magic 50 defence, rather expensive, but they're the second best magic boots), "Barrows" Gloves (complete "Recipe for Disaster" quest 100% and these badass gloves are yours), and Full Slayer Helm (huge magic damage boost during slayer tasks, and the defensive stats are great without sacrificing magic attack) Good luck on your magic studies! Quyneax
I would definitely not use a prayer book, they are *really* expensive and offer low bonusus. You also can't sell them after you are done with them, so it's like 10m sunk into +4 magic attack. Try getting a mage's book instead, which has a reasonable +15 magic attack at about 2-3m. In order of importance, compared to no equipment, ignoring level requirements:Staff of light (75 attack 75 mage 1.5m gp?)Arcane stream necklace (70 mage 70 dungeoneering 30k tokens)Ahrim's robe top and legs (70 defence 70 mage 3m gp?)God cape (60 magic, free)Mage's book (50 magic? 2-3m gp)Infinity hat (50 magic, 20 defence, 500k-1m gp?)Infinity boots (50 magic, 20 defence, 1m gp)Infinity gloves (50 magic, 20 defence, 500k gp)Seer's ring (300k gp) Not sure on the level requirements but they are all 70 or lower except for the staff of light - use a master wand until you can get that. transcript80
If you get one of the God books from "Horror of the deep", choose Zamorak vbook. It offers offensive bonusses only, which is good because typically, when combat maging, you'll safespot and don't need defence (as provided by Guthix and Saradomin books.) The pages needed for the books are treasure trail rewards, but I heard they are really expensive now (200k a zammy page when I got them....) Other data was removed when acoount got hacked...
