You can compare Google to Microsoft and Apple because they have one sales product in the same category, and there Google is still the one who cares more about the user than the money.

HTC dropped Windows in favor of Android as OS for their phones once it came on the market, which proves that Android is of better quality than Windows for phones. And by looking at the app markets you can see that while Android has it all open for whoever to make an app, Apple is sitting on all the money on their side.

Sigh...Browser wars 1.0

Microsoft has a market strategy geared towards selling a wide range of products of a reasonable standard.

Netscape has a market strategy geared towards selling one product at a great standard.

Microsoft overtakes Netscape in terms of standard because they can afford to produce their product at a loss because they are gaining money from other sources.

Now:

Microsoft still has the same market strategy...Simply to make money by selling products.

Google's market strategy is geared towards collecting information and selling it. This means that they can afford to sell products at a loss. Eg Selling a better product for a lower price.

So no, they cannot be directly compared because the way they make money is STILL different. Merely because Google is making PART of their money in the same way as Windows doesn't suddenly make them comparable.

HTC dropped Windows in favor of Android as OS for their phones once it came on the market, which proves that Android is of better quality than Windows for phones

Sorry? Your argument is that a well established organisation decided that Android was better?

Well that settles it then, someone call America and tell them they have fallen off the edge of the world, the Catholic Church decided the world is flat.

An argument cannot be proved by the agreement of a large number of people.

And by looking at the app markets you can see that while Android has it all open for whoever to make an app, Apple is sitting on all the money on their side.

Again you are talking about totally different situations.

Well I knew you wouldn't agree. I know how you hate facing facts.

hmm, given he has Oblivion, it might stand for The Elder Scrolls Construction Kit. It's something used to make mods for Bethesda's Elder Scrolls games. I might be wrong though.

Ohhh...I was hoping for something more fun

Think of it as a more graphically enhanced Minecraft of sorts, without resource gathering. Bethesda basically releases their dev tools out to modders to make additions into the game on their own. Everything and anything that can be created with the dev tools is at your disposal. I've seen people create their own side maps. Recreations of other things, probably the most impressive I've seen being the Frozen Throne from Warcraft. etc...

EDIT: Well, ok, maybe not like Minecraft. Not just anyone can pick it up and do it. You actually need some graphical design talent.

Something I was planning to do, but gave up on after two hard drive failures and the release of Skyrim

Hmmmm. I am wondering about something...Do people ever get...I don't know... Giggle fits?

I just had one thinking about Planeteering, Mather's game from ages ago.

Just thinking of the ludicrosity of what we were doing, with the venturing through the stargate armed with numerous explosives and heavy weapons, then opening fire through the stargate for no explicable reason.

Imagining it is terribly funny...They set up this new intiative thing to discover and settle new worlds and suddenly their people, after having gone through a long period of training, suddenly try to kill them

(posted for reference)

Anywho. I am willing to run a session for the new Dungeoneering (about 2 hours ago from when this was posted) on Thursday and/or Saturday. Please indicate your interest here, or via PM, you don't have to think about your character yet, though you can if you want to.

The plot is thus: The # of you have woken up inside a roadside inn.

Each of you has basic clothing which includes some simple armour (1 wounds worth of protection in all areas) and a weapon of your own choosing (Wands, staves and rods are permissible, though are not inherantly magic). You also have 1 rank (or 0.1 rank 10 times, or any variation there within that adds up to the same) in any skill base you want.

Changes from previous games:

Each of you have 1 Wound (HP) in each of your body parts (Head, Arms *2, Legs *2, Torso) You will die if you go to 0 Wounds in any one place (Though you can be a deranged quadriplegic with your intestines spilling out, if you so wish).

Armour is damage reduction so rats, housecats, and errant stones will not kill you (normally). Though armour can be damaged over time.

Killing enemies is a matter of drama...sometimes they will die easily, other times you will blow off their arm and they won't die.

Dying causes you to lose 1 rank, you won't lose any items though.

Magic is broken down into type and Sorcery. Magic itself (lighting fires, freezing stuff) can be done without Sorcery, but if you want to throw fireballs or summon ice walls then you need Sorcery as well.

You level up Sorcery by rolling a 20 on magic based rolls. (I fully expect people who want to be Wizards to choose lots of Sorcery ranks, please remember that Sorcery is totally worthless without any type magic to go with it. 0.5 and 0.5 would be a better split) This is basically there to moderate magical power growth.

Healing magic doesn't require Sorcery since it can't be used offensively (except against the undead, but I will let you off there  )

Most skill rolls work the same as they always have, you need a 10 to succeed, at level 5 you can succeed in the basics without trying, ect.

Increasing your wounds can be done with better armour or increasing strength/resistance/ect.

You will also get a dodging roll unless you are attacking or circumstances prevent you from dodging (You can't dodge falling off a cliff for example, or an explosion, or if you are pinned.)

Optional:

If you want you can ask for cursed/blessed items. They increase/decrease your stats by a fixed amount or give you some special ability. Cursed items cannot be removed without sacrificing 1 rank, or a blessed item of equal stat value (aka a +3 ring of dodging could cancel out a +3/2/1 necklace of poor judgement) though both are destroyed in the process.

Dying does not remove the items.

You are not automatically affected by cursed items just by picking them up (unless otherwise stated).

If you want you can choose not to benefit/suffer from this but you must make this choice when you are not cursed/blessed.

Well I knew you wouldn't agree. I know how you hate facing facts.

I have occasionally had this happen. But it's usually triggered by something I'm watching/reading. I can't say I've ever had a giggle fit over a memory unfortunately.

Ficus. Heh. Still gets me.

Along with incinerating Lei's door, and WITH MY MIND/RAMMING SPEED/SI, EXECUTE _______ PROTOCOL!!!

In a similar vein, I still get chills remembering some of the major showdowns. Especially the A CHALLENGER APPROACHES! Vs. Dusty! bit In the original.

Late to the desktop party

desktopjanuary12.png

I hate having desktop icons, it feels so unclean. Anything I frequently use is pinned to my start menu.

As for browsers, I use Firefox Nightly, which is the beta build of Firefox. It's far more stable than release Firefox, with all power. I don't mind chrome, but what ruins it for me is the awful adblock that can't even block YouTube ads and the lack of customization in general. I use it for battlelog for BF3 though.

Gotta make a presentation, it's supposed to last 5-7 minutes, any topic.

I'm going to make one about Runescape, and it's sort of tempting to go really in-depth and make it last 57 minutes just to [bleep] with the teacher.

What do you say; Do or do not make it insanely long?

Doing a presentation on Runescape already makes you look like an asshat, sooo...

Yeah, make it as long as possible.

Well. Personally I would say stick to a few things and go in depth with them. Also try and aim for a 15-20 minutes presentation, because very often, you'll find that you're presentation goes quicker than how you had it planned out. I know it's happened to me quite a bit. I also feel that you can cover A LOT about the game if you stick with just 15 minutes or so. Part of giving a presentation is maintaining interest from your peers. Making it too long may end up hurting your overall score. So I'd advise only going a few minutes over the given requirement. 15-20 minutes for a 5-7 minute presentation shows that you put forth the effort to do it and aren't just "getting by". Overdoing would look bad honestly.

Hopefully my advice helps a bit! :)

I don't think I'll be labeled an asshat for making a presentation about Runescape in a class full of proper gamers (proper in the sense that they play games like WoW and Skyrim, not just Battlefield or CoD like so many people our age). I can only think of three people in my class that aren't gamers, and two of them only make presentations about metal bands and are generally supportive of any strange ideas such as this so I'm in the safe there.

Personally...not annoying the teacher is always a good start.

Beyond that anything is fair game.

Though planning your presentation around what the class will think of you is rather silly...Unless Norway has some sort of democratic marking scheme.

If you want to do it about Runescape though, I think it is probably an idea.

I don't think so, Tim.

It's better to keep the audience entertained, or in this case give them something that doesn't hurt their eyes and ears while they're on Facebook or Youtube, or playing WoW or random Flash games.

I agree with you about that, but just because the game they're playing isn't up to any modern standards it can still mean they're proper gamers. WoW players can unlike the scene girls who play flash games and Angry Birds pull all-nighters, and unlike those who only play CoD, CS:S or Battlefield they can talk with eachother about other things than sexual intercourse with eachother's mothers.

Its better to get a good mark...or if there are no marks involved, get it over with with minimal effort.

The audiance matters about as much as the USA cares about Mexico.
