Can someone explain why my Zam book is suddenly worth 20 mil?

I just recently came back to RuneScape after I found out my brother has been playing. Back in the day I filled up my Zamorak, Saradomin, and Guthix prayer books for relatively cheap, and a few days ago I find out that the prices for Zam pages in particular have skyrocketed since then.

Is the quest that allows you to make "illuminated" versions with bonus prayer the only reason, or am I missing something here?

I think because it is one of the best off-hand items for rangers and maybe for mages (can't recall if Mage's books is better), the other books just don't compare.

From what I understand, in July 2010 Jagex added a whole bunch of unique treasure trail rewards to the potential loot. So the chances of getting a reward went up, but the chances of getting pages went down, making them rarer.

Also, January 2011 saw the return of free trade / old wilderness. This repopularized PKing, which means more pures buying zammy books.

EDIT: Here's a graph of the prices relative to time. You can see that the increases follow the updates pretty well perfectly.

They don't require any defence level to use and they have strong offensive bonuses...they're also free to get back so pkers and pures tend to use them.

At some point there was an update that removed pages from treasure trails and made them unique to vyrewatch burning, iirc. That made prices go up a lot. They got added back to trails later, which brought prices down a bit. Then the number of possible pages got doubled, but all the new pages are worse than the old ones so the chances of getting the useful (Zamorak) pages were effectively halved. And pures can make money more easily nowadays I think.
