Thoughts on Allegiant by Veronica Roth. Spoilers under the cut, though I’m still pretty ambiguous for the most part.

[hide]

I am almost completely satisfied with this ending. There’s really only one or two things I would change. But I’ll get to that.

I love the complete moral ambiguity of the resolution. Like, the protagonists turned around and did *the exact thing* the antagonists wanted to do, with only a little bit of illogical justification behind it, just like the antagonists had. I love that shit, I love when bad guys have good reasons and good guys have bad solutions. It’s human, or at least it’s what we’re told is human. Plus, kinda like with Hiroshima and Nagasaki, it appeared to be the only solution possible that could end things before they got worse. It just worked really well, and I really enjoyed it.

Which ties in pretty well with my praise for the characterization. All the main characters were really deep and interesting, and while they had definite defining personality traits, both good and bad, I didn’t feel like they were over exaggerated, or at least not any more than they are in real life. Four’s abusive father was a huge part of his character and influenced a massive amount of his decisions, but there was more to him than that at every point. All the characters were like that, and I really liked it.

I do, however, wish she hadn’t written from first person pov for both Four and Tris. It’s really confusing reading a story like that, and I absolutely feel she could have separated them better. Hell, she already broke the established pov style from the first two books by including Four’s pov, so she really could have just written from third person. It would have been easier, I think.

I also felt it was a little slow at times. A couple times Roth would have a chapter devoted to Tris/Four’s response to a thing, then have a chapter for the other one’s response, then have two more chapters just rehashing those responses. Maybe slow isn’t the right word, but definitely it felt a little longer than it needed to be in parts.

Especially the epilogue, and wow I don’t think I’ve ever said that before. I *love* long denouements, I live for that shit in everything I do, but this one was just 70 pages of the same whining about the same thing over and over again. It got very tedious, because nothing actually happened. It was just Four’s response….

(MAJOR SPOILER)

To my biggest complaint, and I am still a little mixed on this one, but Tris’s death. I don’t know if I’m unhappy with it because I was attached to the character, or because it was just an unsatisfying conclusion. I definitely think I would have enjoyed the ending way more if she had survived, and if Roth had found some clever way to keep her alive without killing Caleb or anyone else. I just feel like her death was wholly unnecessary. It got a huge emotional reaction out of me, but it didn’t seem to serve much other purpose. There was a moral surrounding sacrifice or whatever, but I think that moral would have been just as well served if she had walked in to the death serum *prepared* to die for her cause and then miraculously survived. Maybe with like some physical damage, or even mental damage like she lost her memory from shock or something. Idk, just something besides her dying.

I think actually, that that complaint ties in well to this final one. There were a few important morals in Allegiant: self sacrifice, prejudice, and the power of choice. The central moral to me was the third one, the power of choice. It’s not your genes nor your upbringing that makes you good or bad, but instead the choices you make and the things you do. That kind of drove this story, because there were good and bad/right and wrong on both side of every divide, whether it was faction vs factionless, GP vs GD, or just relationship issues. But the morals that Roth focuses on, the ones that she states explicitly as many times as she can, are the other two: make sacrifices and don’t be prejudiced. And I was a little disappointed by that, because those would have worked just as well, and maybe would have been better, if they hadn’t been so explicit, and instead had been implied.

Oh, also, the make out and sex scenes got old fast. But otherwise, a solid series, and I definitely recommend it.[/hide]

Copy pasted from my tumblr. I guess this is a review, not an overview. Whatever.

I choose b.

Eww, subs are gross. I do not enjoy reading subtitles in 99% of cases. Really, the only thing I've enjoyed with subtitles was 3 idiots, and even then it was in spite of the subtitles.

I know a little about the series (it's a darker look into the magical girl genre), so I kind of knew what I was getting in to. I think even if I hadn't it wouldn't have been as trippy as Vezon's post made it seem, though. It wasn't that crazy, really.

I was kind of bored. Seems like you have to get a few eps in to get to the good stuff, but the first episode really wasn't that great.

I also definitely see now that a lot of the naysayers are right - it's not as subversive as its fans imply it to be, it plays a lot of stuff straight, or at least pretty seemingly so in this episode.

Those were my thoughts, anyway. Mostly just the first one.

TNPW post about a non-japanese/korean, non-american piece of media.

First of all, [bleep] you and your non-Korean rule, I was totally waiting for a chance to post about Tower of God.

Second, Doctor Who is pretty cool. I've watched it since I was a little kid, with old Tom Baker episodes and whatnot. I was an avid fan of the reboot for a while, Eckleston was great and Tennant was fantastic, but I honestly think Matt Smith (and moreso his writers) really dropped the ball [WARNING WARNING WHOBABBLE IMMINENT]; the wonderful sense of continuity and growing cast that engendered the preceding seasons, the callbacks to Old Who, the building moral conflict and escapism that drove the Doctor forwards through his metamorphosis from the axiomatic 9th to the increasingly desperate and rebellious 10th, were all abandoned in favour of a lummox in a stupid fez. The worst part, though, was probably the two threads they did keep hold of, those being the enigmatic character that was River Song and the terrifying Weeping Angels. The former's story was put through the most godawful of mis-handlings after getting a beautifully sad conclusion when she was introduced in the Tennant era, while the latter group was entirely defanged by an incredibly contrived and almost comically terrible series of episodes revisiting them sprinkled throughout the tenure of the 11th Doctor.

But there's a new guy now, so I might start watching again.

So raving about Tower of God falls on me.

Take something that is, at its core, an action series. Give it an underlying mystery and a strong focus on characters. Add in some unique "games" and roles that twist the jobs and classes usually found in fantasy. Then let its art and storytelling evolve over from decent to consistently beautiful, with an unexpected level of emotional depth.

Also, Rak Wraithraiser is the best heroine you could ask for.

I can't think of anything most people haven't heard of, so I'm just going to pay about Avatar.

It's amazing. Best humor, awesome characters, epic setting. Even though Legend of Korra isn't as good as Avatar: The Last Airbender, it's still hands down the best cartoon playing on TV today. (Though I guess not right now since it's between seasons)

So I went and played Pokemon FireRed on an emulator.

It was a Nuzlocke. I was underleveled for Koga's Gym.

I had to run back to the Pokemon Center after the second Trainer 'cause Pidgeotto got poisoned.
