Equilibrium vs. The Matrix

For those that have seen em both: how would you rate them if you didn't know which movie was made first? And how if you know The Matrix is from '99 and Equilibrium from 2002?

When I saw it yesterday, I immediately had the impression it was a total rip-off of the Matrix 1. Sadly enough it only became worse further in the movie. Hero=copy of Neo, storyline=slightly altered copy of The Matrix, atmosphere=ditto, the ending scene,... you name it.

Although equilibrium wasn't bad at all, in fact it was good movie IMHO, it get a 6/10 because it's incredibly unoriginal. The Matrix is one of the most mind-blowing movies I've ever seen, so it gets a 9.5/10. Equilibrium would've gotten a 9/10 if it weren't a rip-off.

How about it? Are there any people who consider the two movies to be very different and can prove me wrong?

They are different. The Matrix was about living in a dream world, and Equilibrium was about living in a world without emotion.

I don't see the similarity. The combat wasn't about defying time/space, it was just a result of training.

Equilibrium was entertaining enough, nothing special though. The fight sequences were nice, especially the face getting sliced off at the end. Of course it's pretty much physically impossible to do something like that, but nvm... The first Matrix movie is definiately superior to it, but I'm not too sure about the other two...

Well I just compared the storyline, the 'heroes', the fighting styles and -scenes, the message of the movie and the atmosphere; they're all as good as identical.

There are differences of course; the World is not lead by A.I. in Equilibrium, the hero is not exactely a good guy from the start; but that's because he thinks that what he's doing is best. The fighting is (as you said) based on training and knowledge rather than believing and being able to see 'through' the Matrix. But apart from those slight differences, it's just a quality action movie, carrying the same message as The Matrix; don't trust anything without feelings ;)

The kung-fu gunfight at the end of Equillibrium = *drool*.

Yeah man, that scene was ace. I also loved the bit where he snapped about 3 limbs of one guy before elbowing him through a wall.

Coolest reload ever.

Kirk and Lars I could handle. At the same time.

I cant remember anything from equilibrium. The only thing I remember is that the cover said BETTER THAN THE MATRIX. which must say its pretty bad otherwise they wouldnt need to lure the customer that way. I also remeber that I didnt like it all that much. And I know that THE MATRIX is one of my fav. movies.

^Haha, yeah, that one needs some explaining, Bubsa. :lol:

Anyway, The Matrix was better. Just...because. The fight sequences were better, the science fiction world was more alive and mystical, the acting was trash but the actors were good at looking good in black trenchcoats and sunglasses, so it didn't matter. 8)

I liked Equilibrium, and Christian Bale is a better actor (although I'm not a huge fan of his style in Equilibrium and Batman) than Keanu Reeves. The story was good, there was a real message about freedom and oppression, and the fight sequences were good. But it was more sterile than the matrix, if that makes any sense. The world was so rigidly controlled by the oppressive government, the movie itself lost the emotion and passion it needed to equal or better the matrix.

In conclusion:

Equilibrium = Good

Matrix = Awesome :wink:

Christian Bale > Keanu Reeves.

Testify!

I'm confused is that a "I agree!" testify or a "EXPLAIN YOURSELF!" testify?

D'oh, sorry for my ambiguousness :oops:

I mean testify as in "I agree!". Synonym for "It is good!...Praise thee!...and can I get an Amen to that?!"
