Cryptic Clue Fest 2012

Greetings, dear adventurers!

We hope you have your thinking-caps to hand, because Cryptic Clue Fest is back! This year, were celebrating the Royal Jubilee with a very special display of in-game pageantry.

Unfortunately, we have just received word that the comestibles required for facilitating such a first-rate festival are now in severe peril of running out! Hot-footed direct to us by GoblinMail, we have received this letter, wherein a stricken RuneScape denizen has petitioned us for help. As you look like youre good in a crisis, perhaps youd care to lend them hand? If so, read on!

Dear stranger,

Im dreadfully sorry to put upon you when we havent been properly introduced, but the pressing nature of my predicament renders the usual formalities somewhat of a luxury! If you havent run into me face-to-face already, the long and short of it is: my name is Essjay, I am employed by the Gielinor Tourist Board, and I am in big trouble!

As youll have no doubt heard, the worst-kept secret in RuneScape is no mere rumour; we are indeed about to receive a visit from Her Majesty The Queen, the magnanimous monarch of distant lands.

The only problem is that the chap in charge of organising the corresponding celebratory shindig - Big Ben - has been so busy attending to the itinerary of Her Majestys visit, he hasnt had the time to do a few of the more minor administrative tasks. You know, small things like... picking up the CRUCIAL permit paperwork or... making sure there is a reserve stock of supplies for all the food & drink that a FIVE-DAY festival requires. No problem, says I, Im happy to sort that out! Perhaps I shouldnt have been so quick to volunteer - it turns out that Big Ben has done rather a good job of keeping his various contacts a secret. I suppose with it being a rather important visit and all, it wouldnt do to publish their details willy-nilly, but it does mean that I have no idea where Im supposed to source these bits & pieces from!

All I do know is that Big Ben has 5 different contacts who, between them, hold the 5 essential things we need. Lets call those essential things celebration supplies for short. I gather that each contact has a variety of different items that they would like to receive as payment for their services, (lets call the items they need payment items), however, Bens payment item lists are wrapped up in fiendish puzzles in order to keep them from prying eyes. Ive asked Ben for the encrypted payment item lists so I can try to decipher them myself, but in an additional effort to avoid arousing suspicion amongst interested parties, he will only send me *one* of those cryptic item lists *per day*. For someone who is in need of my help, hes certainly not making things easy for me!

Ben has assured me that upon receipt of their payment items, each of his contacts will be providing a clue to the next contact who can furnish us with further supplies. Its all terribly hush-hush, but I suppose supplier anonymity is key. Im just thankful that Ben has given me the first of these contact clues already - Ill share it with you when we hopefully meet.

So, thats my predicament in full. I really hope you can help, because Im just not sure I can do all of this on my own! If youre up to the challenge, please see the first payment item clue, which I have included below. When youve identified & gathered the payment items listed, please come to me. Ill be waiting at the gates of Varrock Central Square.

Faithfully yours,

Essjay

Poor Essjay, she certainly is in a spot of bother! So lets see if weve got this right. She needs you to:

Work out which character is in need of Payment Items, using each days Contact Clue.

Work out what Payment Items the character requires from each days Payment Clue.

Head into RuneScape and gather the required payment items.

Take the items to the correct contact, and exchange them for their celebration supplies.

Repeat with new clues each day, until you have all 5 lots of Celebration Supplies.

Give all of the Celebration Supplies to Essjay on the last day to complete the event.

The Payment Clues will be posted on this thread each day, the Contact Clues will be given to you by each contact upon receipt of their supplies (except for the first day, where Essjay will give you the first Contact Clue).

[spoiler=Payment Clue]Ok, thats enough talk there is work to be done! Lets display some typical adventurer spirit, get stuck in, and make sure that we give our regal visitor a right royal RuneScape welcome!

The first Payment Clue is posted below once youve worked out what items you need to gather, grab them from wherever you can and then find our damsel in distress, the irrepressible Essjay. Good luck!

Lor' luv a duck! Im on me Toblerone to find me way to deadly thrill to hop across the Granite maul. Before I go Ill buy me a nice blue Drape from Dick. Hope I dont end up brown bread.

The Cryptic Clues of Sherlock Hulmes

Sherlock Hulmes is an esteemed detective within Gielinor, aiding Roddeck with his initial Cryptic Clues from a couple of years ago, he has returned to solve an even more deviously difficult clue. Someone has been going around and hiding some potentially harmless items around RuneScape then removing them again! Preposterous! Using Sherlock Hulmes' powers of deduction and observation - can you solve the mysteries and guess what items were hidden?

Item 1

On the bush nearby the item, traces of an avian species was found as the items brushed past the bush

Whilst rummaging on the ground nearby, I caught a splinter in my hand which was curious - I was about 6 feet away from the nearest tree

The items had definitely seen some use and been weathered, a bluish rust was found at the scene of the hiding

Item 2

'Hidden' out by the Saradomin statue east of Varrock, the item was laid but when removed, a small damp patch lay where it sat

When the culprit removed the item, there was a struggle as if part of the item had solidified while trying to remove it

Part of the item that got left behind was a solid substance, it had turned a colour crossed between brown and orange

Item 3

Down in the Rimmington onion field the item was found, when removed again expensive gemstone dust was found

Whilst investigating the field, I found an onion uprooted with what looked like a stab wound

The crafty devil had covered his tracks with this item, I can't find anything other than the dust and the uprooted onion

Day Four

[spoiler=Contact Clue - thanks to Saradomin_Mage]day4clue.png

[spoiler=Answer - thanks to Saradomin_Mage]Silk Trader in Al Kharid

[spoiler=Payment Clue - thanks to Sy Accursed]Mod Timbo had invited 6 of the most prominent figures in all of RuneScape to a garden party, giving them time to relax in the sun with Wizard Mind Bombs and a buffet of freshly caught seafood from the coast of Catherby. Unbeknown to each of Timbo's guests, it was a ruse in order to blackmail each of them into giving up their rare items without having to fight them first! Timbo had acquired secrets about each, they were:

Nomad - What people think is Nomad is actually a scheming Dwarf called Honeydew inside a mechanical suit

Nex - While she was young, she practiced the ways of Saradomin before converting to Zaros

Lucien - Only stole the Stone of Jas to impress a lady and it all suddenly got out of hand but needed to continue impressing her

Wise Old Man - Uses magic to convince everyone that he's old when he's actually only 24 years old

Lord Drakan - Has hidden himself from public view due to him enjoying Twilight and being unable to face another since

Bank Clark - Using his inner knowledge of the Bank of RuneScape system, he has been siphoning off cabbages to fuel his addiction to the delicious vegetable

Aghast with this news, each of Timbo's guests were filled with anger and embarassment. Not wanting to cause a fuss at such a prestigious party, they each decided to not to give Timbo a present that they were planning on presenting at the end of the evening. Using their combat abilities would have been too easy but the denial of presents was something that they thought would definitely hit the right spot. The withheld presents were:

Nomad - An Iron pickaxe, the exact pickaxe that dug all of the underneath of Soul Wars

Nex - An Uncut sapphire, one of her favourite gemstones

Lucien - 10 Body runes, Lucien always thought a Disruption Shield would be useful in dire needs but wanted to give them out to a good friend

Wise Old Man - A Cowhide, a reminder of the 'good old days' of Gielinor

Lord Drakan - A Meat pizza, not quite the diet of Vampyre lords but delicious nevertheless

Bank Clark - A Cabbage, as part of his Cabbaholic Anonymous program he needs to handle them without eating one

The party carried on, guests and Timbo alike drank Gnomish cocktails and continued to eat specialty Rabbit sandwiches from Burthorpe. That was until three blood-curdling screeches could be heard from inside of the mansion. "Murder!" the waiter cried, "Murder in Timbo Mansion!". It was true, three people had been killed and only the guests could be to blame! Timbo gathered everyone, staff and guests included, at the Garden Party area for an emergency meeting. "Friends and guests, we have a murderer loose amongst the house!" Gasps came from all present, an elderly maid fainted in the background. "I am afraid to admit that we do not know who or where these murders were committed. We're bringing in a crack team of investigators who will be able to solve this. Bring in... THE PLAYERS."

[spoiler=Kitchen]Kitchen

A simple kitchen fit for a mansion, pots and pans line the room as you enter in an orderly fashion aside from a couple that were presumably used for dinner (Three pans look out of place as if disturbed by someone rushing through the kitchen with a large object.). The main table island in the middle of the table lies strewn with cutlery, knives and chopping boards (Only the finest silverware at Timbo Mansion.) as if no-one had tidied since the last meal. (Cleaning is an XP waste.)

[spoiler=Ballroom]Ballroom

A jukebox sits in the corner of the Ballroom,(The jukebox appears to be stuck on the record Decode by Paramore) stuck on a disc trying to change. The room is massive and the dancing floor shines as it covers (Its not a normal shine that covers the dancefloor, it appears to be some sort of food grease.) the vast majority of the surface of the floor. There is nothing of note in the room or the floor save for the usual scuff marks from dancing. (Upon closer inspection, the scuff marks show a struggle that happened as if someone was convulsing.)

[spoiler=Conservatory]Conservatory

A quiet room of solitude, Timbo used this room as his place to play RuneScape. A PC sits in the corner (Its a pretty normal PC except it has really cool looking blue lights.) with a comfy leather office chair,(Mmmm leather.) the desk has a few assorted items such as empty soda cans. The rest of the room is sparse except for a table and a set of chairs. (Would be a great place to play a game of Cluedo!)

[spoiler=Library]Library

A vast library sits at the heart of the mansion, three floors of bookcases strech as far as the eye can see. There are three wings of book types, a running record of all of the items left on the floor in RuneScape,(4gp, 16gp, Bones, Bones, Champions scroll imp, 36gp, Big bones) every thread that has ever fallen to page 51 (You flick through some thread titles: ***** *** ****** *****, NEW SKILL: SAILING!, mod timbo y r u so cool and need ccf help, clue 4) and the name of every player ever called a 'noob'.(You catch a loose page as it falls out: Zezima, Zezima, Zezima, Zezima, Zezima, Zezima, Zezima, Zezima, Zezima, Zezima, Zezima)

[spoiler=Study]Study

As you enter the Study, you notice that it's an extremely dark and slightly dusty (A strange magic fills the room, an ancient, familiar magic that has been used millions of times that you can not quite pinpoint) room that hasn't seen much use. A grand mahogany writing desk (You find a splatter of blood. Yuck!) sits in the middle of the room, on the desk you notice what appears to be unfinished writing of some sort. (Day 68 - I cook and clean all day for that Bimbo but.. *the ink tails off into a small pool as if a heavy object dropped on the pen and its user*)

[spoiler=Hall]Hall

The grand hall of Timbo Mansion stands before with giant marble pillars and huge Gothic arches.(Upon closer inspection you notice that the top of one of the pillars an ancient stone has been forced there as if by magic) Dressers litter the edges of the hall (Whilst walking down the hall you notice that some of the dressers are damaged with scorch marks) with doors to various rooms, occasional hatstand and painting on the wall. (Each painting depicts a famous moment in RuneScape history, ungraciously the grandest painting in the hall is Timbo on his first day)

[spoiler=Lounge]Lounge

A huge room opens up ahead of you, theee 4 person sofas sit in the middle of the room with a low-standing table. (If only there was a caffeine-rich drink invented that would heighten sense and increase awareness, this would be the perfect place to put it on) An elaborate crystal chandelier sits off the ceiling, slightly slanted (Looks as if someone weakened the chandelier and then replaced it at a slightly crooked angle) and the grand marble fireplace is roaring, heating the room.(This does not look like any normal fire! It looks like Dragonkin flames, now why would they be here?)

[spoiler=Dining Room]Dining Room

It would be more appropriate to call this a Dining Hall, a resplendent dining table runs through the room (Looks as if someone has left their Blue Partyhat here, seems a little careless of them!) like a wooden river able to sit up to 40 guests. It seems as if the laying of the table was disrupted, a pile of clean plates and napkins sits at the end (In amongst the plates you find a precious blue gemstone, I wonder why that was being laid out?). The head chair looks overly majestic,(Someone has been carving at the wooden chair with a heavy iron instrument, its magnificent work though) it seems as if Timbo is a bit pompous.

[spoiler=Answer - thanks to Sy Accursed]

10 Body Runes

Cabbage

Cooked Meat Pizza

[hide=explination]

Meat Pizza

Ballroom

Food grease = greasy food, eg meat, cheese etc.

Someone convulsing = Convulsing due to blood loss/poison

Kitchen - Run through with a large object

Lord Drakan had greasy food (meat pizza), Vampyre bit would cause convulsions. Escape via Kitchen carrying body (large object)

Therefore Meat Pizza.

10 Body Runes

Lounge

Dragonkin fire

Hall

Scorch Marks + Ancient Stone

Study

Ancient Familiar Magic

Heavy Object Struck

Combine to suggest Dragonkin invovled and therefore Stone of Jas (the ancient stone and why its familar and what the heavy object is)

So Lucien therefore 10 Body Runes.

Cabbage

Dining Room

Blue gem = Sapphire = Nex

Blue Phat = Wise Old Man

Heavy Iron Instrument = Iron Pickaxe = Nomad

Process of elimination, those three all in 1 room so Banker therefore Cabbage

Tbh this last bit can be used to figure out all 3 items as by same logic WOM, Nex and Nomad are together therefore must be the other 3.

Edit: Repurposed since he realised his mistake.

Gotta say glad I helped a friend with a cockney character in their dissertation with this, made the standard ones easy to swap out and meant I was in practice for the phonetic-styling to get the others fairly quick.

I've got my permission slip & have worked out who to go to next - I assume the next lot of items will be released tomorrow via another cryptic clue?

Yeah, that's how these CCFs work :P

Yup CCF basic format is:

Day 1

Item clue on forums.

Told which NPC to go to already (in this case Essjay)

Result is you get given a Person clue for day 2.

Day 2 onwards

New item clue on forum

Work out NPC from previous days person clue.

Result is a new person clue again.

Until final day when result is you get given the reward.

Talking to the permit officer with the items in my inventory and she just says, "Can't you see I'm busy?"

What'd I miss?

You have to go to Essjay in Varrock (with the items on you) first to be given the basket to collect the supplies from these people in and recieve the clue of who to go to for today.

okay so I got the basket from her and I have the three items that were posted here and it says I haven't collected anything.

Do any of you know what may be going on?

You made the same mistake I did. The basket is for collecting items you receive from the person of contact. The items you collected (beer,cape,afro) are what you give to those people. You're not going to be putting anything into the basket, the game will do it for you.

Yeah the basket is for the 'celebration supplies' that these people give you, once it is full (end of the week) you'll take all the supplies back to Essjay.

It is a bit misleading and unclear in the way they give you the basket, but basically you just need it on you (with the clue items) when you go to each person.

The first post has been updated with the Day One answers and the Day Two contact clue. Kudos to Sy Accursed and Saradomin_Mage for getting it so quickly. :thumbsup:
