And if you do live totally off the grid in the middle of no where, then you don't have an internet connection and aren't posting here. As for me, I don't mind. Aside from having preventative qualities, it seems like a really easy way to help the police catch people. The only exceptions are that I disagree with red light cameras on the grounds that they exist for the sole purpose of making people slam on the breaks (as in, they cause accidents), and pad the police budget. I'm also not going to support cameras that have a view of you while using the bathroom. Finally, I am not going to support cameras that can see beyond the visible spectrum that have a view of private property (such as thermal imaging cameras) on the grounds that humans are using to thinking in terms of visible light, and are likely to focus any attention to their expectation of privacy as such (you would for example, need special curtains to block a thermal camera in some cases). This also extends to technology such as Van Eck phreaking in public surveillance tools. That's the sort of stuff that needs to have a warrant. Randox
Red light cameras suck, and I plan on never moving anyplace that uses them, or traffic cameras in general, because I like driving on roads where everyone, including the police, feel free to add 5-10 to the limit at their own discretion, 15 on the highways between 4 and 7 am. I don't think I have ever seen our police (specifically the RCMP, not the city police) drive the limit.
stevepole
I think it was my freshmen year of college they installed a bunch of new red light cameras in the Phoenix metropolitan area, but by the time they got them installed they couldn't afford to operate them due to budget cuts, so the majority of them were turned off half the time. Randox
I don't think people having a psychotic break are the best example of who deterrents work on. Chances are someone who was as far out it as he was wouldn't have backed down from a tank. As for a camera, it would probably be fine. Flash memory is a lot tougher than a human, and as the windows blow out, all the pressure would be able to escape. The bus itself wouldn't take that much damage past the immedaite point of detonation, and barring being hit by shrapnel, the camera might even still work. If you're trying to kill people, the bomb will be at least a third of the bus back, so the camera is not that close as far as metal and silicon are concerned I think.
