Catholic Town - 'Ave Maria' - Planned in Florida

NAPLES, Florida (AP) -- If Domino's Pizza founder Thomas S. Monaghan has his way, a new town being built in Florida will be governed according to strict Roman Catholic principles, with no place to get an abortion, pornography or birth control.

The pizza magnate is bankrolling the project with at least $250 million and calls it "God's will."

Civil libertarians say the plan is unconstitutional and are threatening to sue.

The town of Ave Maria is being constructed around Ave Maria University, the first Catholic university to be built in the United States in about 40 years. Both are set to open next year about 25 miles east of Naples in southwestern Florida.

"I believe all of history is just one big battle between good and evil. I don't want to be on the sidelines," Monaghan, who sold Domino's Pizza in 1998 to devote himself to doing good works, said in a recent Newsweek interview.

It amuses me that the former owner of a pizza company which through the sale of unhealthy food straight to people's doors, is probably causing more misery related to obesity and ill-health than a few condoms or pornographic magazines ever did.

Gov. Jeb Bush, at the site's groundbreaking earlier this month, lauded the development as a new kind of town where faith and freedom will merge to create a community of like-minded citizens. Bush, a convert to Catholicism, did not speak specifically to the proposed restrictions.

"While the governor does not personally believe in abortion or pornography, the town, and any restrictions they may place on businesses choosing to locate there, must comply with the laws and constitution of the state and federal governments," Russell Schweiss, a spokesman for the governor, said Tuesday.

What this basically means is that Jeb Bush wants to ingratiate himself with the Christian voters, even though he knows that the town will have to be rejected by the courts because it is unconstitutional - he'll be able to say "but I supported it! It's those darn courts that disallowed it!"

Stupid people, sueing over nothing.

I mean, if you don't go to this town, don't interact with it in any way...why should you even care? I doubt the man could singlehandedly buy the United States and declare us all Catholics.

People who sue for stuff like this really need to get out in a while. I'm not Catholic, I disagree with Catholic doctrines, but I really see nothing wrong with this. It's a private community, they can do whatever the heck they want.

What kind of comment is that?? It's a town within the state of Florida, which is part of the United States. Of course it has to comply with US laws. Otherwise it's known as a rebel uprising and needs crushing.

Does Florida have laws condemning or supporting abortion, pornography, or birth control sales? Such laws are left up to the states. Absence of either type of law means that the civil authorities are left to determine this.

Last time I checked, there are VERY few states that have a consitutional amendment saying that abortion is legal or illegal. Florida is neither.

Its a private, new community. If people do not like the laws, they should not move there. As for being a Roman Catholic community, there is nothing wrong with that, either. Freedom of religion applies. There are already Amish communities all over the US that have these same sorts of laws, and they follow state laws.

So really, this is nothing new, and nothing wrong with it. Its all some random person on the complete opposite side of the country trying to start a pro-life vs pro-choice debate.

What about people born there? If there's no birth control you know there will be a lot. They can't just move out of the town because they're too young, then, when they get older, their relatives are liable to see it as them trying to get away from them personally.

If you don't like porn or birth control, here's a hint: DON'T BUY IT, you don't need to live in a town where it's not allowed.

Fair enuf for people that choose to go there, but what about the civil liberties and human rights of those born there or have to visit?

That's up to the individual families living there, not for lawmakers.

As stated before, Amish communities still thrive. Thier children are born and raised in that community. Some leave because they dislike it, most stay and continue the traditions.

Being a completely religious town, these kids will probably be pretty comforatable living there, considering they know nothing else. (Assuming they are born there.)

Fair enuf for people that choose to go there, but what about the civil liberties and human rights of those born there or have to visit?

For visitors, nobody is forcing them to go there. If your car breaks down, so what? I mean, the last thing on my mind when my car breaks down is getting an abortion, buying porn or condoms. Visitors are superficial, and can come and go as they please.

As for the children born there, they have thier liberties and rights intact. They can leave when they are 18...which is also the legal age for getting an abortion, having sex, buying porn and condoms...Hey wait, that means that absolutely none of their rights are being violated?!

If they come from a family devout enough to move into a Catholic city, chances are good that they will be Catholic.

...I bet some other religious towns will start popping up then (of other denominations and other religions). *Imagines the drama*

There have been religious towns in the US for over 200 years.

This is a bit immature, but I honestly can't resist it:

HAHAHA! What on EARTH made you think there is a legal age for buying condoms! That would be an absolutely preposterous idea! Yeah let's stop teenage pregnancies by stopping them getting hold of condoms.

I can't think of one right now. :? Are they purely one religion, or can anyone move in?

Considering the age of consent in the US is 18, kids under that age should not need them. You are of the spoiled generation of brats who the schools keep telling to use protection instead of just flat-out using abstinence. A much better way of stopping teenage pregnancies would be to not have sex under the legal age.

And weezcake, there are tons of Amish communities all over the East coast. Anyone can move in, but you have to be willing to follow Amish laws. If you break the laws, you will be asked to leave the community. All of these cities are law-abiding cities recognized by thier respective states.

Excuse me? You don't know how old I am. You also don't know what I was taught at school.

FYI: when I was at school we weren't even taught what a condom or the pill was, it wasn't on the curriculum.

I guess that would make you one of the generation whose significant others no longer find them attractive so they won't 'put out', and you therefore think that everyone else should have to go without too.

You're just one of those idiots who thinks sex is evil because I'm guessing you can't get any. There, I can make stupid assumptions too.

What a truckload of steaming BS. With flies hanging around it. How do you think they will enforce that? Are you too thick to realise that they make condoms available to any age is because they CAN'T stop people having sex underage so they are just minimising damage.

Lets not be naieve here, it happens. So surely the worst thing you can do is ban access to underage people.

Also note that the stupid AoS in the US is not replicated around the world, most of europe is 16 and lots of places even as young as 14.

I'll be frank.

I am 20. Our sexual education consisted of "Dont have sex" and "Wait until you are married."

The age of consent in Texas is 17, most states are 18. The law states that you can not have sex with anyone under this age without parental approval. That includes with other people underage.

More info on consent laws can be found here: http://www.ageofconsent.com/ageofconsent.htm

Nowadays in schools, they state that its perfectly fine to have sex while underage. In fact, here's some free condoms! Don't get pregnant!

Forgive my assumption. Your immature reply really left me with no choice but to guess how old you were. The fact is, condoms are treated like cigarettes in every state. The schools somehow have recieved permission to bypass this law.

Regardless, you detract from my point. Its illegal for kids to have sex, so why encourage them?

What a truckload of steaming BS. With flies hanging around it. How do you think they will enforce that? Are you too thick to realise that they make condoms available to any age is because they CAN'T stop people having sex underage so they are just minimising damage.

Well, its not my fault that people break the law. At least in Ave Maria, they will most likely not be having sex underage. But underage sex is not really the point here, is it?

Well, thats kind of off-topic, since the whole discussion is on a town in the US under US law.

If anyone wants to discuss underage sex, please feel free to PM me. I have a heaping pile of manure to spread out, but I really don't want to thread hijack anymore than we already have.

This discussion is on Ave Maria.

Your point is void. No one is encouraging them, they just know they can't stop it so they practice damage limitation.

Do you call prosecuting a 16 year old boy for statutory rape having had sex with a 15 year old girl encouraging it?

Sounds good to me. As long as I don't have to live there, whatever makes them happy....

I do find the idea of having innocent children born into such a nest of lies repulsive however, but fortunately I don't have to care, because that's up to the parent.

We actually have some communities in Sweden which are basically entirely focused around the local church and one of them was on the news a few years ag. It was pretty neat, one of the priests declared herself to be the bride of christ, another of them had two mistresses living with his family and eventually murded his wife (by proxy even, one of the brainwashed youths did it and claimed god sent her annonymous short messenges on the cellphone). Not saying it will happen to this one, but hey, who knows what happens when you group the l33t supporters of our holy lord together.

That case can't be from the US, because the lowest legal age is 17.

Personally, I don't understand why people are practically encouraging kids to be having sex. Before you spout off on "they love eachother"...stop. Most kids having sex under the legal age are not mature enough to understand love. Hell, most people my age are not mature enough to understand love. Its just there for the "now" and pleasure.

I think birth control should be illegal, so kids will understand the consequences of thier actions. I mean, I know someone is going to think twice about it when they are 14 and end up having to raise a child or go through the awful grief of an abortion.

So really, it all boils down to a war of morals, and neither of us can really win, can we?

Too late by then... it's not the kind of mistake that can be learned from... and kids will not just learn from each other's mistakes either... because they're clearly not learning from each other right now with the stories of teenage pregnancies in the media.

I think it interesting that you expect kids to understand the consequences of their actions at 14 and to make mature decisions with their hormones, and yet in this new community you wouldn't allow them to leave until they're 18.

Well, its not my fault that people break the law. At least in Ave Maria, they will most likely not be having sex underage.

Sorry to come back to this, since you are right that this isn't what the thread is about, but I think that it's important. I don't remember the religious group who said that "give us a new born baby, and we'll vouch for its opinions by the time it's an adult" - but they were wrong. I think that you are assuming that children will follow what their parents teach.

I am interested to learn about these Amish communities, I didn't know about them and will look them up. :)

So you're saying that pizza causes more obesity than condoms and porn? That's a given. However, pornography is quite the socially destructive thing - I would put it at a much more generally destructive level than pizza.
