Lionheart_0
Ok we had option sheets today, choosing our courses for next year. Im goign into grade eleven, and i have already chosen what i want to be as a career, and have my heart set on it. I want to be a science teacher. Now for the diffrent subjects i took, i had to chose the ones that pertained to teaching the most. English-University Math-University Chemistry-University Bioligy-University Physics-University Leadership and peer studies Co-op Now im compleatly sure to be a science teacher, i need the first 5, as they are needed for either the science/university part, or for teaching period. The alst two are what im not sure about. In leadership and peer studies, we learn about diffrent leadership roles and how to act as one, as well as learning hot to communicate well with our peers. In the course we are made to help a class, and eventualy teach one lesson of the class. I think this would be an ok choice. Now the one im kinda worried if it was right was the co-op. It is not a real class, but a kind of apprenticship, where we go to the work place and help out and stuff. The main point im worried about is that i dont want to go into like a mechanics shop or some kinda factory, i want to go to a school, and co-op there. And im not sure how it workes yet, but i hope i can go to the schools and help out. The other problem with this is that it takes two periods. So now i have two periods devoted to one thing, instead of having two classes. Was this all a good choice for the route i want to take. (BTW to do this, i had to stop my music and computer courses) Sig by IkuraiYour Guide to Posting! Behave or I will send my Moose mounted Beaver launchers at you! rocketman089
Is this for high school? Because when you go to university/college, your high school classes really don't matter much. Gamertag: King Arizona
Anesthesia
As above ^^ At your age you can't really expect to be doing work experience pertinent to your final career. You get all the experience you need for teaching when you are doing the training at university or wherever. Some people are changed by being a moderator. I wouldn't be. dark_ice
Firstly, I wouldn't recommend being a teacher unless that is your absolute only desire. To me, they have to put up with so much everyday, and get payed so little that it's not worth it. (However, that's only how it is down here, may be totally different for you! :D ) If that's what you want to be go for it! Next, usually the classes you take in high-school aren't directly related to your career path. They are usually just general studies courses that will help you in all areas. Whenever you go to college is when you usually start taking career specific courses. So in high school I'd recommend taking your first 5 choices for sure. Those all seem well rounded, yet still pertaining to your job choice. Also, remember not to make your schedule too hard and get bogged down with the work! Your 6th choice really depends on your personality. If you already have good leadership qualities then I don't believe you should take it. Yet, if you have poor leadership then the class would benefit because that is a very important quality to have when teaching. Your last choice sounds like it would be pretty fun. But it would help if you knew what kind of job you were apprenticing. You wouldn't wanna take the class and end up helping with someone you know you will never be, like a sewage inspector or something! Hope I helped :D
gonpost
You'll have to tell us your other course options... Otherwise, those look pretty darn good. What level of teaching are you looking into? insane
They look good, though they really are irrelevent. I'm from Ontario like you, and grade eleven courses serve no purpose except to get you into some grade twelve courses that might matter. What really matters if you want to be a science teacher is to get killer marks in grade twelve so that you can get into a concurrent ed. program in university afterwards to avoid the teacher's college backlog. Lionheart_0
Is this for high school? Because when you go to university/college, your high school classes really don't matter much. Oh but they do matter greatly. I jsut learned today that to get into university, i need to have 6 university courses in grade 12, and the only way i can get those is by getting university courses done in grade 11. Problem is, i only have 5 uni courses in grd 11, so in grd 12 ill have to take a grade 11 uni course and then the grd 12 uni course right after. Also for around here, the university's look at your grade 11 and 12 marks, nothing else really matters. I plan on going to McMaster university to get some kinda degree in science before becoming a teacher. And yes, ive dreamt of becoming a teacher since grade 8. I feel it is a really importat job, and i plan to fulfill it. Sig by IkuraiYour Guide to Posting! Behave or I will send my Moose mounted Beaver launchers at you! Theres a few community college classes we can take here to get a few college credits out of the way, but in the end it's your marks, not the classes that matter (scholarships are different I guess). Too get into certain departments in a majority of Canadian University, you need specific classes in both Grade 11 and 12. Also, you need certain marks in certain classes depending on the University/College. It also all has to do with Credits ect. It's a lot of fun. runesmithie
As to the posts about it doesn't matter, I've heard from people that your major doesn't even really matter (I guess that's probably as long as its in the same scope of the job you are looking at?) Can anyone clarify that for me? o.o I just posted something! ^_^ to the terrorist...er... kirbybeam.
Mcqueen
I dont know why anyone wants to be a teacher but I guess if thats what you want to do then go ahead. (Honestly a low paying job and being stuck with kids who make fun of you behind your back doesnt sound like fun to me :? ) The classes look good and I hope youre going to be one of those nice teachers  . Im going to be a sophmore next year... In my junior year Im planning on taking lots of computer and art classes (Im planning on a job working with computers and I just love art :D ) Good luck with your classes. weezcake
You really shouldn't be making up your mind about your career at this time-- you still have 2-3 years, and it's better to have a mix of things than only one type of classes. You need to be well rounded for college; what if you decide one day you don't want to be a science teacher? Then what? Good thing all majors require you to complete GE (general education) courses; they're basically random classes that you can take "for fun" to expand your knowledge. I've taken US History and Asian American studies, and I plan to take Political Science classes some day. Heck, I'm taking German next quarter. You should never be only specialized in one thing, IMO. It gives you a lot of time to experiment and look over different types of majors-- try not to stick with one thing, unless you are absolutely sure you want to do something. You still have 3-4 years to decide-- I would take a variety of classes and then decide later. In college, you don't even have to declare a major until the second year. :) Besides, youll have to take your high school classes again in college. ==================================Retired tip.it moderator.Teaching and inspiring. Ne0z
In my opinion choosing to become a teacher strait after school is a bad idea. I guess i just dont think being in a classroom all your life and not going out to see the real world is any good. If you do decide to become a teacher make sure you go and do something else for a few years before hand. Or else you will never have your chance untill you have finished teaching :)
____
To my knowledge it's just grade 12 courses you need specific credits in. You may need prerequisites taken in grade eleven, but the universities don't look at that. For me, you needed 4 semesters of certain subjects with a passing grade to even get into a degree. For me it was English and Maths B. For Some of the science degrees it was Maths B, English and Chemistry. And since there is only 2 semester a year, both grades 11 and 12 counted (along with the OP score but meah, won't go into that). Anyhow.. @Lionheart_0: Find out exactly what is required in that co-op thing and decide if you want to do it or not. You'd need everything else if you're just going for Science. But if you want to specialise in something (like Chemistry, Biology or Physics) then that'll be molded once you get to University.

As to why a science teacher, well science is my best subject (and my favourite), and i think a teacher is a very important position in society, so i want to help society. Also, i do want to specilize in the science feild, but i have chosen yet, it will be either chemistry or bioligy. Ive never had a physics class yet, but i will need it because of needing the 6 university classes. Sig by IkuraiYour Guide to Posting! Behave or I will send my Moose mounted Beaver launchers at you! insane
Actuly their encouraging us to know by the end of grade 9 what we want to be. I disagree with the government on this one. At the age of 13 we are supposed to decide what we are going to do for the rest of our lives? It's ridiculous, really. They blow everything way out of proportion. None of my friends and I know what we "want to be", yet we're in university, just taking courses about things we enjoy doing! It will most likely end up in a job that we enjoy doing - but until then, we have no idea. Just take life one day at a time and do what you like. I went through the same dilemna of choosing courses a few weeks ago, and I still don't know what I want to do. I took all the courses that are quite necessary, and those which I may end up going into. In grade 11 I ended up doing pretty much something from every different type, save for the arts and technology, which I experienced in grade 9 and 10, and found I have no wish at all to be affiliated with technology (and I'm not sure about music or drama; I only took visual arts: who knows, I may be a hidden musical genious or actor, but it could a be a little late in the game for that now...) But for grade 12 I decided on Chemistry, English, Calculus (the 3 most widely required courses for University), Data Management (a far easier type of math), Biology, History, Law, and Weight Training (grade 11, hehe). As you can see I've kept my options pretty wide open. And while I don't have that tunnel vision like you seem to have on science teacher, you still might want to keep your options open...Who knows, what if over the summer you find you really want to be a musician (only an example), then you might have trouble. Personally, If I gave you any advice, I'd say drop the co-op, and take up your music and tech courses...You'll have pretty much all the courses covered, cept for social sciences...From what I've seen in co-op I don't really think it's a life-changing kind of thing... I had no idea what I wanted to do until the end of my 12th grade year. Yes, there are prerequisites for classes, but shouldn't there be a general path everyone takes to finish up high school? Everyone had the same English and History cirriculum, with a different math, foreign language, and science class depending on your interests and skill level in that subject. Plus, there were electives and foreign languages.. I thought it was always better to have a mix of things instead of simply focusing on one subject in high school. Yes. there were prerequesites for classes, but placing such pressure on a student in the 9th grade to decide what they want to do in the future is insane. -_- ==================================Retired tip.it moderator.Teaching and inspiring. Also this isnt the government, its my school. The administration itself trys to treat the school as though it were a workplace (thats their excuse for the dress code and being on time). But this dosent really all matter to me. I knew i wanted to be a teacher by the end of grade 8, and it took to the end of grade 9 to tell i wanted to be a science teacher. ____
Nah, I doubt it's just your school doing that. There are a lot of places around here desperate for people to learn a trade (and similar) because there seems to be somewhat of a shortage of tradespeople :-? And, just a suggestion, if teaching er, fails... pick up something in IT as you say, but I suggest journalism as another option.
