Armour and Thieving

I heard a while ago that wearing less armour increases the chances of you successfully pickpocketing an NPC so to clear the rumour I decided to test this out myself.

I did two trials each having around 300 - 400 attempts at a pickpocket on a paladin.

The first trial was without any items equipped.

After 310 attempts I got 120 failed attempts and 190 successful pickpockets which is a:

38.7% fail rate with no armour on

I then did it with full Torag and the obsidian shield on which gave me 232 fails and 202 successes which gave a:

53.4% fail rate with armour on

So with such a huge gap I would say having armour on really does have a big affect on pickpocketing NPCs.

Weight does not seem to have an affect on this by the way as when I did the trial without armour on I had over 100kg of armour in my inventory.

You may or may not of known this but this will hopefully clear things up if you didn't.

apparently rouge's clothes boost the odds of stealing too. and wearing gloves helps too

Back by popular demand!

And I guess I just wanted to tell you, as the light starts to fade, that you aree the reason, that I am not afraid, and I guess I just wanted to mention, as the heavens will fall, that we will be together soon if we will be anything at all.

Try 100 pickpockets WITH rouge , and 100 pickpockets without? So we know if that invovles aswell :)

ya, i thought this was common knowledge.. i've read it a few times before... but i guess it was just theory... like the ROW makes you have better drops.

Everybody knows that the ring is just for asthetic purposes only.

Hot dog, a chance to use this chart I made!

I had the same idea and tried it out after I wasted my time getting the full Rogue suit, so I tried four small trials of 100 picks each on paladins. My results aren't nearly as pronounced as yours, but that may be because I only tried it with lightweight gear (i.e. gloves/weapon/boots) , the rogues' armor and absolutely nothing, instead of really heavy gear like you did. It probably also matters that your thieving is much higher than mine (I think mine was 82 when I did this) or this could be some new thing Jagex implemented recently, since I made that chart months ago.

The main reason I did it was to see if the full suit of rogues' gear helped any, which it obviously didn't. I never really paid that much attention to the difference between naked and wearing armor, since I only got a difference of a few percentage points.

Artie: I think you should have tested it on something with a lower thieving required level. Paladins could be the equivalent to sharks (ie, you keep burning regardless of level without gaunts), you keep failing regardless of what you wear.
