I never knew the backstory behind it:

 

 

 

If you know the history of the song it makes it all the more powerful so...Hansi Kursch, the singer, was walking his dog on 2 separate occasions and saw 2 children, a girl and boy get hit by cars and killed. The song speaks of the reaper coming and taking the boy's life, and speaking to the girl to ask if he could take hers as well.

 

 

 

The song makes a lot more sense now.
