Please Help With This Pixel Signature - Closed

Hi all members of the tip.it community! I have been trying to create my own pixel signature. I was reccomended that I set up this thread for help, advice and c/c (wow, I feel so un-noobish using that word :D)! So I have drawn a moon which I am very happy with, I have created a mage coloured it basically and added a small bit of shading on it. Anyway, I am finding it very hard to shade using the computer. Any help or criticism would not go a miss and please feel free to have a go at colouring/shading/editting my pixel signature as you feel appropriate!

Thanks so much!

nice sig i like the moon... work on the staff a bit as it needs some shadeing and such

Okay, I took your advice and shaded the staff a little... i tried to add some grain but I'm not sure whether it looks okay... what do you think. Secondly I have added a lighter colour along the side nearest to the moon, a darker colour on the side the furthest away from the moon and a dark colour where sleeves/hands etc block out the moonlight... what do you think?

Here it is:-

You are headed in the right direction, great job so far. Remember to add more shading on the clothing, face etc.

Think of what else you want in the background too.

Okay, new morning, new day. After I finished the linework of the man, I feel I rushed the shading... I am removing the shading to start afresh because I am not happy with the grain or the shading on the staff and the lighter colour on his cloak looks too rushed. Thanks for all the coments so far guys... keep them coming!

EDIT!

Here is the new and improved {hopefully anyway} pixel signature... I have begun taking out the black lines and replacing them with more subtle colours. I have added the moonlight on the mage's cloak, face, hair and belt. I am going to be working on the moonlight on the mage for a little while so any c/c would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Sorry about this... it IS myfirst pixel signature after all... :D Anyway, the picture below has got all the details on it. There is just something about the shadowing and lighting on the arm that puts it into a strange perspective. It just looks incorrect. What can I do?

Hold on, photobucket is down... when it boots back up, I'll post the picture... :D

EDIT: Okay photobucket back up... here it is!

Okay... well obviously I am going to add some grass to the signature when I'm done shading the man, and I am going to put a rune ... I've forgottern what they are called. It's like a ruin, you know where you go to add elements to your essence. I'm sure you know, but anyway, the ruins are going to go next to the mage and then I was thinking of having a few splatters of blood, maybe a cheap weapon, some bones etc...

Here is a quick (and I mean REALLY quick) sketch of the basic features of this sig...

Yeah, I've been pondering over the orb on the staff for a while now, whatever I do, it just doesn't seem to look clear/magical/mystical... anyway, I decided to fully edit everything else about the mage... see my profile! Any ideas wouldn't go a miss! Thanks for your comments so far, keep them posting guys!

I like what you have done, great job so far :D

For the orb I would say if it is clear glass give it a slight blue hue with some lighter blue reflective markings... if that makes sense.. if not let me know and I will try to show ya a sample tomorrow.

Looking forward to having you participate in our next pixel project :)

Yes, I would like an example of what you mean... you've left me slightly bewildered but I get the general gist of things. Another thing... I just don't seem to have enough colours on my pallette and therefore I can't shade gradually. I've tried saving my picture as PNG but I am still limited with the shades and colour variations... Any help?

This would be very interesting to shade, I hope it comes out well, but atm its a bit flat, and using only 3 colours won't really help it.. First off the face proportions are all wrong, try make sure his eyes are half way down his head, try not to draw the rim of the nose on a head-on angle, you can show its a nose by the shading you use, also necks aren't usually as wide as the head..

I'll help ya with face shading, as your character is looking away from the moon he would have a very dark face, because no light can hit it, but you may get a shine of light on the side of his face, you've done this, but I'd say white doesn't fit the complextion of the skin, I've tried blue because it just looks nicer and seems to fit..

Aldron mentioned the orb, I'd expect to see some light shining off that too, as orbs catch light. I've just added a light grey to not contrast with the skin too much but gives it some depth.

Heres what I came up with in like 2 minutes..

not too a masterpiece but shows how you can use colour to show light and shade much more successfully.

goodluck, try keep the image dark, work with dark colours (close to black), and add on the lighter ones.. And don't be afraid to experiment with different colours, in our skin for example we have several different mixes of colour, it isn't just dark peach to light peach.

Thanks, but as I said in my previous post, the reason I have only used a few shades of colour is because of my limited pallette. If anyone would be willing to solve this problem for me, please see my previous post and post on this thread or 'pm' me.

Terley, thanks for the ideas and advice, the blue would look better on the side of the mage's face... I'd love to see some of your pixels, if you would show me some, please post me a website if oyu have one, or post them here :) . I'm intrigued, I hear you make some mean pixel sigs!

Thanks again everyone!
