phone scam in australia

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

Just making everyone aware of a phone scam that is operating in Australia... See: http://4wisemonkeys.com/dc-phone-scam/

Basically you get a quick prank call and if you ring it back you will get hit with $3 a minute and $4 each month thereafter

Heh, I totally forgot about posting it here. Nice on skelm.

Thats why you dont reply to prank calls. :P

Theres been some usenet discussion over the past few months in aus.comms.mobile but no real information came out apart from word that they were pranking mobile phones all accross the country.

Thanks for the link its good to have the extra information.

I got a similar missed call but had no interest in ringing back someone from NSW(?). Good to know thanks skelm

This is just one reason why i don't call people back unless i know exactly who they are.

Kirk and Lars I could handle. At the same time.

So this is the article that netted you that cease and desist?

Yes, but how many people, honestly, have that kind of know-how.

Last time I utilized my skills in that I got called a stalker :(

I dont know about Australia but in the UK all businesses must have names and addresses registered at Companies House in order to actually trade. And thanks to the Freedom of Information act this data is legally obtainable by any member of the public that wants to know.

I posted some of this at #DW but ill post a bit here too...

I the UK we have possibly one of the best telecoms regulators in the world called ICSTIS and their spokesperson Rob Dwight regularly is quoted in the media in articles about companies abusing prs (premium rate services)

Here are a few quotes about what he had to say on the matter of "missed call" advertising.

"These scams are illegal"

"These premium rate lines are set up just to fleece consumers."

"No reputable company promotes its premium rate numbers in this way. And because it's unsolicited, these companies are in breach of the Data Protection Act - you have to give permission for your contact details to be used in this way."

ICSTIS also recently closed down yet more companies using this "illegal" marketing scam so i think its pretty safe to say that this kind of stuff certainly isnt legal in this country but i'm not so sure about the Aussie laws. However as they have a registered address in the UK (Birmingham) it might be worth contacting Rob to see if he can help you out with trying to get information out of the Aussie regulator

This is just it though, while they have a UK address, this scheme is not being performed in the UK.

And it is Australian laws which apply. However I'm sure Mr Dwight will have some usefull information for handling this situation.

I'll bring it up with Micheal. See what our lawyer thinks on the issue. The ACCC would probably be interested with what Rob has to say about this kind of scheme. Hard to ignore a leading figure in international consumer protection ;)

Make the info avalible on 4wise monkeys!

Or give it to me and ill post it in a reply.
