July 27, 200619 yr Well, I'm supposed to take drivers ed this fall.. It costs something like $300-$400 USD and you're supposed to have 6 months of driving experience (with your parents) before you take it.. I've hardly driven at all (mostly because I find it boring..) I was thinking about this and why should we have to pay so much for some guy to tell us what we've already learned from our parents? This class is supposed to teach us about driving, but we have to know how to drive to take it... My thought is it's a huge waste of time and money to pay for a class that teaches you what you already know.. What's your opinion on drivers ed? Is it truely a waste of time and money? :-k :-k :-k Edit: High School Driver Education Are you almost ready to get your drivers license? Iowa Department of Transportation (IDOT) requires everyone under the age of 18 to go through an approved driver education course. Our course meets all IDOT guidelines and regulations. Participants will receive a minimum 30 hours of classroom which includes all aspects of driving. Tests will be given throughout the classes. Participants will also receive 6 hours driving instruction which will include all types of driving environments such as residential, downtown, two-lane highway and interstate. Kirkwood uses licensed driver education instructors. Our instructors are subject to annual background and driver license checks. (Contact your school counseling office for further information). Also after some searching I found out it costs $345 USD to take the class.. Internet Marketing For Newbies
July 27, 200619 yr $400? What the hell. I think mine costed between $50 and $100. It was boring and I didn't learn much, but you have to go. No choice. You need to start slappin' peolpe if they're trying to charge $400. That's...Wow. The popularity of any given religion today depends on the victories of the wars they fought in the past. - Me!

July 27, 200619 yr How about post up what you're meant to be learning, and I'll tell you if it's a waste of time and money. Defensive Driving learner's Ed isn't a waste. That actually teaches you have to effectively control your vehicle in a lot of potentialy dangerous situations and some :P

July 27, 200619 yr Driver's Ed here is free. I wouldn't take it unless there was some sort of benefit. :-s Like if you take it here, you get a certain amount of money off insurance payments.

Dont you have to take it in order to get your license? I think that its a complete waste of money and time. When I took it all they did was show us videos of car accidents and told us how everyone in the class is gonna die in a car accident unless you follow every single rule (and even then you will probably still die). We also had one full day where all we did was go out and drive golf carts. Yea that REALLY simulated real driving
July 27, 200619 yr When all the adults I know grew up they had one of two things: 1) they gave you drivers' ed in public school free of charge or 2) you could have your parents teach you, then you just take a written test to get your license. However where I live you have to take some BS class as well. It's mandatory, you can't get somebody else to teach you and then take a written or real test. It's the stupidest thing ever. I think that if they made the written test rigorous enough and had a reasonable real-world test then it would save everyone a lot of time and money. handed me TWO tissues to clear up. I was like "i'm going to need a few more paper towels than that luv"
July 27, 200619 yr Where im from, you can pay lots of cash for drivers ed, or pay $20 and get a little guidebook, and have your parents teach you, you then take a test on a comp, if you pass, you get license!
July 27, 200619 yr In Southern Ontario, if you take driver's ed you can get your full liscence 4 months earlier. (we're in graduated liscencing)

Yea that REALLY simulated real driving  Heh, when I visit my great grandparents in Branson I love to drive their golf cart around :) I don't think driving a real car is as easy as driving a golf cart.. I hope they let us drive golf carts :-k : @insane: I wish it worked that way where I live... I would have taken drivers ed this summer (I'm already getting my license a few months after I'm 16 :wall: ) Internet Marketing For Newbies
July 27, 200619 yr Golf carts could be good practice, I guess. Well, except for they're smaller...And slower...And nothing like driving a real car, really. But it's better than...nothing...I guess... The popularity of any given religion today depends on the victories of the wars they fought in the past. - Me!
July 27, 200619 yr No. It's not required here. You CAN take it for free as a class at your highschool and you get a discount on car insurance for completing it with an A or a B average.

July 27, 200619 yr Wow. In California, we have drivers ed (which is taken in high school) and drivers training (which is taken on your own time, if you're planning to get your license before you're 18. Sounds like they bunched up both into one class. :x But it is optional here in CA. Well, optional if you don't want to get your license until you're 18+. It costs something like $300-$400 USD and you're supposed to have 6 months of driving experience (with your parents) before you take it. This doesn't make any sense to me. Why are you supposed to be driving for 6 months prior to taking this class? Shouldn't this class come first? I personally believe that practice with an adult is the best way to learn. The class is important (driving with your parents' rules is not always the best way to learn lol), but not worth that much money. ==================================Retired tip.it moderator.Teaching and inspiring.
July 27, 200619 yr They've implemented graduated driving in Maryland, where I live, and it even applies to adults. I was 22 when I got my license, and I had to take driver's ed (in a room full of 15 year olds), and I have provisional status as well. The only difference is that I don't have any of the curfew silliness, and mine is a standard frontview ;) Semi-Permanent Interim Temporary Leader of the Supposed Inmates of the Alleged Insane Asylum of What May Or May Not Be RuneScape
July 27, 200619 yr here in the uk i belive you haveto pass a written test before you can even go learn to drive. you haveto get 30/35 questions right (well it was for my bus license anyway) to pass it. lessons here are most likely taught by driving instructors, you tend to have around 20 lessons(̢̮â¬Å¡Ãâã20 a lesson - it ain't cheap) then you can take a driving test. its expensive here to get a driving licence Runescape nick : Fat_SlugOwner of Ears, Scythe and a 10 year veteran cape :D

You can start having lessons as soon as you turn 17 and you've got your provisional license (can apply for it at 16). You don't have to have ANY lessons here, you could just go ahead and do your theory and practical tests without having had a lesson from either an instructor or your parents. You've got to get 30/35 questions on the theory test, 44/75 on the hazard perception test and then do the 35-40 min practical test and get no serious/dangerous faults and no more than 15 minor ones. Some people are changed by being a moderator. I wouldn't be.
July 27, 200619 yr Sounds like a rip to me. Go find some shady dealer who'll do it on the cheap. Wow, I never noticed how easy I got it here. Basically, all I had to do to get my license was do a test to get my Learners, then wait 6 months to get my Provisional, which is a basic drving test. Provisional is basically the same as an Opens license cept I can't drink. :P Don't have to take anymore tests, wear any stickers, no curfew and can take as many passengers as I want.
July 27, 200619 yr I live in iowa also and this year i'll be taking drivers ed. Its only like 100 dollars here and you have class 1 day in the school then you drive with a lady and three classmates in a car around the area. :?

Here you have to be driving 6 months after the class in order to get your license. In Iowa can't you get a permit to drive to school and back (but you can't drive anywhere else) by yourself? I have family in Iowa and I think my cousin may have one of these permits.

And I'm fairly sure you have to have taken drivers ed to get that permit. Iowa sucks :wall: Internet Marketing For Newbies
